Advice please

My 2005 4 Runner failed Mass. safety inspection for a steering problem that will cost $850 to fix. Frame is rusted pretty badly and check engine light is on, but engine (102 k) is going strong, and body is good. I have decided to get something new with better gas mileage. Any idea on how much I could (or should) get from a junkyard? Can I sell the catalytic converter? Thanks!

 

You would be lucky to get $500 from a junk yard. You may be better off parting it out and then sell it to a junk yard. If you are buying new, you could trade it in and be done with it but don't expect much.

 

Thanks...just wanted to add that I am pissed with Toyota for having such crappy frames and not recalling them like the Tacomas. Never had a frame rust out...usually it's the body.

 

Is the frame rusted to the point of failure (rust holes larger than 10mm)? What's the check engine light for?
