I hardly think "ninnies" is particularly offensive.

Have you looked at the Toyota lineup? RAV4, Highlander, Venza, Corolla Cross, blah blah blah.

Of course they'd have a 4Runner, Land Cruiser and a GX all on the same base chassis.

 

Part of my motivation for getting a 2023 was because I don’t want to deal with a new gen. Maybe that line of thinking will end up being a mistake, but who knows…

 

I feel the same. And I don't wanna pay the new car prices, I think I'll hold on to my 4runner until it bites the dust in like 10-20 years.

 

Same! After 15 years of ownership I will be 74 years old and the 4R (2021) should have about 285,000 miles or less on it.

 

Free advertising for Toyota. They should pay owners to have that stuff written on the vehicles.

 

That's where I am. Mine is ten years old with 155k, to me it's still fairly new, haha. I can see easily getting another 10 years out of it, and I drive 20k miles a year.

Plus, I'm just not able to spend 50k plus on a new vehicle, so I would have to wait probably 6 or 7 years to buy one used anyway.

 

@Squatting Pigeon thank you for the link, the AutoEvolution rendering is not bad, it's interesting how they show the build up photos with the 5th gen 4Runner. The insiders say the CarBuzz rendering is the closest so far but a) needs to be more angular, like the new Tacoma. b) The Tacoma headlight design is extremely similar, but 4Runner has a different curvature than the Tacoma units. c) The C-Pillar is more upright for better ease of entry and a slopped D-Pillar. (thank you to @Carmaker1 for the insights).

So AutoEvolution got some of those features closer, but one thing to note on the is they are taking some design cues from the Tundra grill, with its vertical sides, where the Tacoma grill sides slant inwards at the bottom half.

^ Here's something I posted in this thread about the GX and the future Land Cruiser from back in November of last year (post #234). The meat of this thread was using Carmaker1's info with a little speculation thrown in there from some other sources.

I'd say this turned out pretty damn close so far.

 

Nope! Not a Land Cruiser, we know from insiders that the Land Cruiser will have a retro 40 &/or 70 front end with round headlights.

BestCarWeb of Japan, rendering of the Land Cruiser is getting closer but still lacks the retro 40 &/or 70 front end.

Now, could this be a rendering for the new 4Runner, yes, it's close. However, I wonder if they will want to share the side window up-swoop beltline on the GX, LC & 4Runner?

 

The Toyota Prado refresh for 2024 will be sold in the US as the Land Cruiser. The Prado has been sold worldwide for decades and has an established client base that will probably be expecting a boxy but modern look in this refresh. Something akin to the new GX. That is why forum members here are having such a hard time finding any render that has a FJ 40/70 heritage look to new LC. You would think that by now there would be plenty such renders if anyone in the know thought it might really happen. And sadly it will not happen. Toyota has too much to risk in a backwards looking new Prado especially in markets where the modern FJ 70 is still sold.

The only real chance for a heritage styled Toyota 4x4 is the new US 4Runner. This model is sold only in North America and retro changes to it would not disrupt an entire global customer base that sees the Land Cruiser as a foil for the Range Rover/Defender and not a competitor for US products like the Bronco/Wrangler.

Oh boy, the car salesmen is back to dazzle us with more BS. Those of us who are aware of insider leaks know the international Prado will continue with its new model being evolutionary from its existing model.

Those of us that understand more about the US specific version of the Land Cruiser, understand Toyota will in fact make a separate, unique retro inspired Land Cruiser for the US.

Getting your information from a clickbait website, describing the international Prado from some pixel artists imagination, and then claiming you're informed about the US Land Cruiser, sounds like typical salesman talk.

I guess the Toyota employees, regional managers and dealership general managers must have been wearing VR googles when they saw the imaginary US Land Cruiser.

You really think that Toyota is going to develop an entirely unique Land Cruiser for the US market, lol?

I would be willing to bet a steak dinner that the US market Prado, or Landcruiser , or whatever they're going to call it will be very similar to the GX, as the Prado and the GX have basically been the same exact thing for years.

 

Agree. Hopefully that means they are both produced at the Tahara plant.

At the risk of being buzzington buzkill, I love that there is such a passion for what's in store that we're up to 20 pages. Reality is whatever comes out, some will love it and some will hate it. I'm excited to see it come out but not because I plan to snap it up as soon as it comes out.

I bought my first 4runner in 2019 because it was ripped in reviews as being and old school, reliable, BOF, no-tech dinosaur. I bought it to drive it until the wheels fall off. Hopefully I live long enough that I will outlive it but who knows. If it has to be replaced, I just hope the next gen available (whether it be 4runner or LC Prado) when I replace sticks to its roots

 

It's funny how frustrated I'm getting over what others are speculating, or claiming to know about the next LC and 4Runner.

You're 100% correct that some will love it, and others will hate it.

I'm also excited to see what's coming. I'm really starting to think about trading in for the 6th gen, if they really nail it.

 

Curious. What would it take for you to give up your current? And is it because you are bored with what you have or because they are must haves?

Either a better version of KDSS, or a true sway bar disconnect. Or, maybe a manual option with a better crawl gear. Or, just a great design that keeps the roll down rear window. I guess, there's not one specific thing that would get me in a 6th gen. It would probably be a combination of features.

I'm definitely not bored. I just think I might have done some things differently if I started again. If the 6th gen is a good all around improvement, or if the Landcruiser is reasonably priced, it could get me into trouble.

And, even the new GX looks sexy AF if I'm being honest.

 

I actually wanted to start with a LC but they were way out of my price range for what i wanted as a starting platform. I really liked the GX until they updated the grill for the toyota thread spool heritage but the early ones were few and far between with good records when I bought in 2019. If there had been decent aftermarket front bumpers for the spool grill at the time I may have gone that way but used prices with low miles were creeping on a new 4runner so that's what I went with. Would love the v8 with 6 speed, even if gas mileage was the same, just for that feeling that it's not struggling. For reference, my previous vehicle was (is, my wife drives now) a 5.7 hemi v8 JGC with 8 speed tranny. That thing picks up and goes in any situation like you're driving something with the weight of a cloud

Same reason I went with 4runner when LC and GX were ruled out.

I love that JGC... when it works. I bought it used but in the first 6 months I owned it:

1. The nav unit said I was in the middle of the Atlantic. Took several months to fix because it required head unit replacement and the head units are apparently VIN specific and were on backorder (obviously a common issue)
2. Blew out a white puff of smoke when started, when parked facing uphill. Found a TSB that the oil pan was bad design for v8 and caused it. Dealer replaced at no charge but after they fixed, every time I would back down the driveway a low oil pressure light would come on and put it into limp mode. Dealer found a sensor had gone bad and replaced it. Happened again and Dealer found they rolled the gasket when replacing oil pan and replaced the sensor and gasket a couple days later
3. A few months later, it started puffing white smoke again on startup. Found another TSB that v8's manufactured during a certain time frame had the wrong dip sticks put in for oil level check. It had been overfilled by 1 qt (assuming they went by dipstick level and not oil capacity) for the vehicle life - about 3 years at that point. I pulled the dipstick and verified wrong part # before taking to Dealer to be replaced free of charge and another oil change to correct level
4. The plastic ring around the "TSS" sensor, for lack of a better analogy, had fallen off and was causing the auto cruise and auto braking system to do random crazy shit, like slam on the brakes when I was on an exit ramp passing someone on their right (it was looking at traffic in the left lane)
5. At 80k miles and about 4 years old, the coolant lines went soft and it started bleeding to death on my garage floor. All coolant hoses had to be replaced due to "wear and tear" (my previous JGC made it 180k and about 12 years before radiator replacement - hoses were still good). They saw slugde in radiator and said I mixed fluids - I told them to check records because they were the only ones to service it for the past 2 years. They did an analysis that showed no mixing of different coolant types and couldn't explain what happened
6. It's a 2014, so required numerous software updates when I bought it. Most notably, the one that prevents idiots from getting out of their vehicle when it's not in park so they aren't run over by the vehicle (think a guy in a star trek movie was killed that way)
7. There have been several issues with the wiring for blind spot monitor, backup sensors, gas tank door release, basically anything wired to the rear because they corrode easily

There are other things I can't think of at the moment but you get the point. Technology is cool and great when it works but to me, a vehicle should just be simple and reliable. Get me from point a to point b, over terrain that I choose, as I drive it. It doesn't need to drive me
