Recently installed the Anytime backup camera mod from TrailGridPro. There are a few other resellers out there, basically the same product. In case you don’t know how this works, it splices into the R(everse) signal at the radio and depending on switch position, through a relay, will display front or rear camera, regardless of gear selector position.

install is fairly straight forward. And went without issue. Works as expected. Except…….

Truck throws a P0705 error, lights check engine light, and turns off A-Trac. Makes sense that it is the mod. I undid and no error. I can clear the code, but it will come back.

Truck is being told it is R when everything else says something else. Truck is perfectly driveable. Searched but only found a Tacoma owner with same issue.

This is a fairly common mod, so I am wondering if it is a change to my just-built 2023 ORP, that maybe no one else has seen yet. I did reach out to TrailGridPro, but have not heard back.

Not going to keep if there’s no way to clear error permanently.

All of my connections are good, double checked. I use sumitomo connectors for a professional job. Followed wiring diagram and ensured correct voltage is on correct pin, when switch is operated.

Anyone else with a experience with this?

    thanks!

Mainly want to reply so that I can follow - my hitch mounted swing out tire carrier just arrived so next week will be installing along with anytime front/rear and camera relocation.

I think I've seen a thread in the past, either this site or the other 4runner forum, where someone had issues when installing on a 2020+. I don't remember it throwing an error code, just didn't work properly.

Are you sure the install instructions are for 2020+? I believe up to 2019 head unit the wiring was different. Not sure if anything has changed in the past year head units.

    2020+

It works as described with the added feature of an error code.

Yeah, that's never good. I haven't taken a good look at the install instructions yet - are you tapping off any wires, and if so, which ones? I see tons of posts here about electrical issues when adding raptor lights, fang lights, etc. Seems 4runner don't like the electronics messed with and one reason I don't have any electrical mods... yet

The kit comes with two harnesses that plug in between factory harness and radio. They are just one-to-one, wire-to-wire, the kit splices are already performed on these go-between harnesses (so you don’t have to tap/cut/splice factory wires). One harness just is for illuminating switch, so nothing there of concern). The other specifically taps into the harness at the reverse sensing wire and video feed. This allows dashboard switch to put 12v on reverse wire making radio think truck is in reverse, and the relay puts video on video feed front or rear, depending on switch position. There is really no other way to do this, unless you got into radios software and programmed then control of the video. No one is going to do that. Plus the video has to work pre-boot up of radio. As soon as power is on you shift in reverse (or for this discussion push the switch) you get video regardless of state of radio. All this makes me think 2023 has changed some software that now when this kit makes the radio think the truck is in reverse, but it is not, truck evil/bcm thinks it is an error state and throws the code. I hate to pull this all out, but if TrailGridPro has no workaround (doubt it), I probably will.

Yeah, plug-and-play sounds familiar and why I was ok buying it (got it from another member here who didn't install).

Hopefully someone here with a 2023 has one installed and can chime in

I have a 2020 ORP. I have been considering adding the Anytime backup and front camera to my vehicle. I've been a little concerned about possible issues.

Any resolution to the problem the OP was having?

I recently installed the Anytime Backup Camera kit on my 2020 off-road and it works perfectly with no errors. Make sure you check all the head unit connections, as one could be loose. Also, if you have specific questions, I will try to answer then.

I have since installed mine too without issue but I have a 2019.

Maybe check your grounding wires? The one I bought from another forum member was already pre-wired from where they got it so I just had to plug in the harness and ground the two ground wires so there wasn't much for me to mess up.

Wondering if wiring or electronics have changed slightly for 23 models as a result of the multiple camera angles option.

I installed this kit on my '21 TRD Pro back in September of '21. Works great and has never caused a problem. I use it all the time; one of the most useful upgrades on my 4R.

I don't know for sure, but my guess is yes, because people report a wiring change when trying to install an aftermarket folding side mirrors.

I have this same camera on my 2020 and I don't have the issues described above; however, I do have other problems with flickering and the screen going black at times when it is hot and the vehicle is on a incline. I read that if the cables inside the bay get really hot this can be the culprit. My gut tells me that these cables are fairly cheap and might need to be upgraded or insulated well so that we avoid the issues. I am trying to figure out whether or not I should try a whole different set of cables. It is frustrating that when you need the damn camera it flickers. Sometimes is fine though.

I agree. I think actually the quality of the relay and switch are questionable. When I have time, I’m going to pull apart switch to investigate. I’ll also source an appropriate relay from a quality electronics supply house. The camera and proprietary connectors are the only items of value in this kit. Not a fan of vampire taps, but those additional connectors might not be making a clean connection.

I was not as aware as in should have been, or would have ordered with panoramic camera… live and learn…

My father has this camera on his F150 as does my wife on the front of her 4R. His sees freezing temps. Hers has been stored outside in Houston for the last 2 years while also being driven 40 mph or less most summer days and neither has had any issues. I don’t know that I would chalk it up to wires getting too hot.

So that weird, I just installed my anytime camera and it works good. Had issues at first and it’s because one plug fits the same in the radio but once I figured it out it works good, until I found out that once I put it in reverse the back-up camera does not show up unless I flip the switch. Anyone else having this issue? Btw I have a 2023 TRD ORP 4runner.
