There is a 2017 4runner for sale near me with 6k miles. Its been parked in a garage for 5 years. The price seems good, low blue book sr5 model. 4x4 .
I guess my concern is seal drying out etc. And no obvious rodent damage etc.
Anything else that might make you pass on it?

If it has been stored properly, then there shouldn’t be any concerns. Have your mechanic do a full inspection.

Manual says to drive at least 10 miles in 4Hi once a month to keep transfer case lubricated. Not sure if it applies when truck never moves, but I would probably ask somebody knowledgeable if it's a problem or not.

If it's been sitting for 5 years, the fuel system is going to need some TLC

Good points...lack of lubrication and fuel sitting around too long. I'm going to check it out more and get more details asap. Thanks for the replies.

I’d be cautious around the owner. Anyone who mothballed their 4Runner and isn’t over 75 years of age is sus.

Probably need to get the gas pumped out of it. I need to do that to my boat that sat.

It happens I have a 21 ORP which is not driven in winter and only used for recreation and towing my boat. I only 800 miles on it. Due to family health issues it has sat more than I expected and I am no where near 75 (but my folks are thst I am helping).

Yep, my first question will be about the back story why it was stored. Hoping to meet the seller tomorrow.

I test drove the 2017 4runner today. It is like new, just under 6k miles. The owners son bought it new from local dealership and unfortunately passed away shortly after he bought it. She was distraught and held onto it, parked in a garage. It was serviced in 2019 and stored with near empty fuel tank. Recently registered and full tank of gas. It runs a drives like new.

    Offer accepted!
I'll post a pic once I'm the new owner. :)

Sounds like you win! Sad story, though. Hopefully they’re ok emotionally with selling it.

Wow, that's a great find. Yeah, sad story but happy ending with a new home for a good vehicle. Enjoy.

You should change every fluid in that truck and be on the look out for leaks over the next few months of driving. Looks nice though.

this, when a car sits during season change a lot of condensation will build up in sitting cases (this is normally burned off at start up).

Enough accumulation will cause in effect a non lubricated period longer than normal due to the excess. The problem is most metal wear surfaces are coated/treated so once that wears off you’re in trouble. Gears/cams come to mind (lost the case hardening on a pair of cams in a 1.8t I have hopped up, took a couple months after that to wear those puppies down. Totally my fault, should have been dry sump because my driving is rather spirited)

good news is since it was new, should see no issues with cv joint grease sitting (as long as it’s not AZ and it baked for years in a garage that stayed 100)
