That's how brake calipers seizing begins

After one year, no-snow no-salt winter, lower internal piston starting to rust. Eventually, left untreated, rust crawling past rubber seal and piston got stuck. Remedy: clean every spring, cover with some rustproofing, like fluid film, or do nothing, and after 2-5 years, replace calipers.

Do you think woolwax would survive the heat? I wonder if a coating of anti-sieze would do anything to protect from rust.
It sucks because I just did my brakes and saw the same thing.

 

Just got done doing all 4 calipers on our new to us 2016.

 

just about any grease under that kind of heat will liquify and run out of that piston hollow since there isn’t a boot or seal to keep it in place.

i prob wouldnt go as far as scraping the hollow every year. make sure your brake fluid is clean and the dust boots are in good shape is all one needs.

 

What about high-temp header paint?

 

I herd the 4R calipers can go relatively easily. I do my oil changes at the dealer and they do some preventative maintenance, ill have to ask what they do. Have not needed to replace yet....

Crazy how none of my old cars I needed to replace calipers, even at 300k.....

 

I've done it on two cars: a badly rusted '68 Beetle and a 2010 Outback at 230k miles. The root cause of the latter was a worn wheel bearing.

EDIT - im sure the dealership will gladly tell you (especially if you ask) your calipers are scuffed and need replaced, along with other stuff....... Drive the thing, youll be fine.

 

Dude what are you on? You should share with the rest of us because we want to be on your level. But maybe not, doesn't seem like you go for quality.

And yes, calipers do need to be replaced or rebuilt if the piston is frozen enough that you can't move it with brake pressure, air, or mechanically.

Obvious you've never dealt with any.

 

It can get tricky when seating the seals on the dual pistons, but is do-able with some patience and determination.

Difficult but, don't let that stop ya!
