    Local knowledge,

Looking for recommendation on best bang for the buck engine check light diagnostic code scanner. Any favorites out there? Preferably a scanner that doesn’t rely on a phone app, i.e. self comtained?

    Advice appreciated,

What is your budget and do you need bi-directional testing?

There are so many out there from $100 to $7,000 with bang for your buck depending on what you need out of it.

If you get a good one you can reprogram a key and start some new vehicles?

    Not familiar with bi-directional testing
Looking for accuracy, preferably with plain English description of the fault if there is such an animal, ability to re-set annunciator warning light and non-reliant on a phone app. Budget flexible $300-$400?

any suggestions, advice or observations appreciated!

    THANKS!

I have not bought one yet, but I have 2 noted as good options.

    Autel AutoLink AL619
    INNOVA 5210 - OBD2 Scanner

There isn't really such a thing as plain English fault descriptions for the majority of problems as there are often multiple potential causes. That's where bi-directional testing comes in. It allows you to send and receive signals to and from specific sensors, actuate solenoids and switches and the like so you can better isolate failures within a system.

In your price range, I would consider the Autel MX808
