Recently we were sent an e-mail from what looks like Toyota. It talks about Dynamic Nav. & Wi-Fi connection expiring. This must be the part I did not read about. Does anybody have a little insight about this? Thanx in advance for enlightening me.

Got the same E-mail. Basically the trial has expired (was for 3 years on mine) and you have to pay a subscription ($8.99 per month) to use the Nav. You can still use the Nav for free but will not get any map updates. I just got a Garmin GPS to use, which is better than the one from Toyota. First my mic went out (can't use the hands free calling) and now I have to pay to use the Nav, what next, have to pay to start the car? Seems like both items (mic and Nav) have problems on most of the Toyota vehicles, so I have read online.

Thanx wingo, if I recall correctly a similar thing happened when we owned Silverados, but that was quite a while ago. Thanx again for the input.

I think dynamic nav is when you press the SOS button and tell the person who answers where you want to go and they send routing information your nav system. When your trial runs out your nav will still function as usual.

I love the Garmin interface, but the way I use nav (for traffic information) I use it all the time. If I had a stand-alone GPS in my car all the time it would be a temptation for thieves.

Yeah, I saw that reading the manual and couldn't believe they would offer a feature like that. I assume it uses the internal mobile connection (not satellite), so it would need phone coverage to function. The only scenario where I could see myself using that feature is if I'm too frazzled to use the regular nav or my cell phone, in which case maybe I should just take a few deep breaths and skip the SOS button. That's for when I'm upside down in a ditch.

So the $8.99/month after 3 years is to be able to talk to someone about directions and also keep the Nav maps updated??? That's (to me) a total rip-off. If I only want my maps up-to-date I would't mind paying a yearly fee of maybe $99. I would only update every other year though.

Toyota's web site says $169 for 2 years of Dynamic Navigation

    that seems expensive to me.
Personally I like using CarPlay with Apple Maps/google maps/waze more than the Toyota map that way it’s always up to date and I don’t have to pay anything.

I wouldn’t mind paying the Toyota monthly fee once in a blue moon to keep my map updated as long as it’ll stay updated if I don’t keep the subscription and if it’s less than $10/month.

The only time I really use Toyota nav is when I go off-roading so I can make my truck poop (leave little crumbs on the map) so I can find my way back when I’m in the middle of nowhere

Darn, that's not what I remembered. I like how big the head-unit map is and would prefer to keep it up to date. I've only played a bit with the navigation function. I've used Android Auto a bit more, and I don't like how much smaller the map screen is.

I don't mean to derail the thread but to be clear, the regular on board Toyota navigation system is free forever, right? (You just have to update the map occasionally)
