Is it unheard of to want to put on some cheap matte black steel rims because I think they look better than the fancier trd ones? Does this impact performance? If so how much in off roading and mall crawling?

    Steel will be heavier.

You can find the steel wheels on ebay for pretty cheap. The oem steel wheels weight 28-30lbs each. The offset of them is +15.

I use FJ cruiser steelies for my winter tires. Can't feel a difference compared to the TRD Pro wheels I usually run (well, besides the winter rubber compared to A/T tires)

I would imagine you'd need new TPMS for steelies - I don't think they use the same ones as the alloy wheels. I could be wrong, though.

You can transfer the tpms from pro to fj steelies no problem (on a 2016). I run 285s on steelies. There is a distinct loss of mpg and get up and go. But they look cool on and off trail on the Quicksand 4runner. Easy to balance. Very durable. I use Chemical Guys Max Coat wheel wax and they pop. Discount Tires charges a small fee to remount your tires when switching.

IMG_7134.jpg I agree with the matte steel look. Found these made by American Racing that were pretty reasonable, but aluminum. Might want to look around unless you found something that fits your fancy.

One of the Wisconsin TW guys has steelies painted a color similar to the body. Looks fuckin' badass! Let me look for a picture...

I just happen to be that cat. Steelies are the only way to get that classic NGO look. The wheels themselves are a few pounds heavier than stock alloy wheel. I lost 2 MPG when I put mine on but I thing most of that is due to the tires coming from the street centric tires that come on the TRD Sport. These are off a FJ cruiser. Toyota P/N 4211-35330
I painted mine RAL 7037 Dusty Gray which turns out to be very close to the Cement color.
