He says the 5th gen 4R is the best maintenance free vehicle Toyota ever produced. You should be able to watch the video by clicking the video in my post.

Thank you. I meant that I can't watch his videos, because I generally don't care for YouTubers. :D

At the risk of starting an argument I have to say this fellow is quite genuine and he does know his Toyotas. He isn't shy about pointing out flaws in the machine.

Thanks for posting the video. Funny, just last week I got a call from my dealer wanting to buy my 21' 4R back. LOL I said thanks for the offer, but no way.

I don't know enough about the guy to argue about it. :D

What useful knowledge could I gain from a YouTuber that I couldn't find in my manual?

Agreed about Scotty. I tried watching a few of his videos, and they're part of the reason I have a negative view of YouTubers, in general.

    I do like Tinkerer, though.

Thanks for posting. If I lived near Chicago I would go to AMD for maintenance and anything else. He seems like a stand up guy to me in all aspects and kudos to him for having the means to start his own shop and sharing so many details with us

If you're not interested in the take of someone who's shop services Toyota and Lexus vehicles constantly, don't watch. He went through the entire Toyota and Lexus lineup pointing out the best and the worst of them all, based on vehicles that have been through his shop and the service/repairs he's done. I found it very informative, had seen that video before.

    Not for everyone.

I tend to watch Scotty for entertainment purposes. Every once in a while, I can glean something valuable. He has recommended a snake oil product for decarboning an engine, and after doing some more research, I bought it, and it works. Saved the engine in my 2.0t Passat, and our Honda Odyssey with problems from the VCM system. That said, I did a bunch of research to verify before I acted on this.

Practical experience, expansion of knowledge, tricks and insight from that experience. Not saying a random YouTuber is the be all and not to verify what you see, but it certainly provides great insight. No different than joining a forum for knowledge and taking peoples suggestions and adapting to your needs.

Ehh. Seems like the biggest lesson I have learned from being on this forum is to read the manual. :notsure:

I purchased my 4Runner earlier this year for the long run. It'll most likely be my last ICE before moving towards a hybrid/electrical for my next vehicle.

How is it maintenance free? It requires fluid, grease, and filter changes far more often than any of my other vehicles.

Maintenance free would be the wrong phrase. He talked about how trouble free they are, regarding repairs needed, not needed maintenance. In fact, throughout the entire video, he kept reiterating that none of what he was talking about as far as the most reliable vehicle ratings held water if the regular maintenance was ignored.

You contradicted yourself, when you imply there’s nothing to learn from a YouTuber and then mention the Tinkerer. who has taught me more about Toyota suspension than the manual ever did.

I grant the manual authority, as it is “official.” And YouTubers must work hard to gain credibility. But the manual only gives you the “what”. Never the “why”. It’s explaining the why that gives YT videos their value.

    You are correct.

I was probably referring specifically to the one being discussed. But, I suppose I should be a little more clear..

I don't generally care for YouTubers because I see information being spread around by people who don't always know what they're talking about. All it takes is some confidence and a little charisma to get views. Now, you have even more people who are misinformed about a subject. And, they think they're right because some YT personality said so. It has potential to do more harm than good.

I consider Tinkerer to be one of the exceptions.
