I just plan on avoiding 4K+ RPM for the first 1000 miles. Brakes can be replaced, and generally you can avoid all hard stops. The best way to break in an engine is to have varying loads, RPMs (under 4K), and speeds. I plan on doing a roadtrip from Ohio to Florida within the first 100 miles, but will be traveling through mountains with a bit of cargo. So the RPM will be fluctuating rather than just a constant 2200 RPM the entire way.
FWIW, I would really like some snow to play around in 4WD before spring. If that happens, I will certainly be using 4WD before the 'break in' period is up.

You’re right, I got carried away. I don’t need to respond to every reference to 10,000 mile oil change intervals :frustrated:  Apologies.

Hit 1,000 miles this week. Changed the oil and filter today. TGMO 0-20W and stock filter

will it help? Who knows, but I’ll only hit 1,000 miles once on it and who knows how long and how many miles I’ll put on this beast

Did the same thing and later wondered if toyota put “SPECIAL break-in oil” on new engines.

toyota oem oil has higher moly content than your off the shelf synthetics fyi I don’t think a single stealership uses Toyota oem synthetic for oil changes tbey use the cheapest crap bulk oil they can buy all the more reason to do your own oil changes

Hell I picked mine up yesterday, don't think I have 50 miles yet. Am towing my 6x8 utility trailer W/ATV tomorrow.

I never did tow that day & haven't yet. But I had 998 Sat night when we got home. Not sure if I did 2 miles today taking Xmas tree to local fire co. for re-cycle. I don't know or haven't found out how to make actual miles show up when driving. It shows when start up or shut down. Also haven't read how to use the FOB for remote start cause I use Toyota iPhone App.

Drove my 4R with 200 miles on the Odo up the Rockies.. several 10k+ ft passes and plenty of engine breaking, to change up the engine load.

2hi and 4hi used to deal with the winter storm we faced

Made sure to not exceed 3k RPM tho

Nice, I was similar but very mild climbs, den to winter park so lots of hair pin turns at slow speeds. I might have gotten above 4k rpms very shortly. It all the info I’ve read it’s not a big deal and the motors are broken in long before they are put into a car. I think we’re good

When my 2017 SR5 hit 1,500 miles I had dealer change oil & filter at my expense. I gave them a clear plastic 1 quart jar with lid for a pint of first catch oil out of drain plug. It was very dark brown, almost black. I let the sealed jar sit in my garage for a couple of months before I poured it into a 5 gallon jug for disposal. There was a lot of black sediment on the bottom of the jar. Glad I did the oil change. My regular oil change interval is 5,000 miles.

I did very early first oil change and sent a sample for oil analysis. Metal through the roof. You WANT to have early oil change because it is evident Toyota does not do factory break-in for these engines.

You cant (I cant, nobody can) judge anything by eye. New oil gets dark very quickly. The only way to know definitively is to send it to a lab like Blackstone for analysis.

Define "metal though the roof" ? What where the numbers, where they out of the normal expected range for break in? (Blackstone usually comments on that) There is always some metal particulate in the break in oil - that the "break" part of break in... rings are seating into cylinders which actually is a process of microscopic fine wear. That generates metal particulates. As long as the number is not out of range for first change and you are not seeing visible large particles I wouldn't panic.

Of course Toyota doesn't break engines in at the factory. Nobody does for consumer mass market cars. If you are looking for that you are only going to get it with certain very high end specialty vehicles.

I installed my blower at 400 miles. I'm at 8k miles now and have changed oil/filter twice. IMO, frequent oil/filter changes are the most important thing you can do.

Technically no due to the Manguson Moss act they would have to prove the blower was directly responsible for a failure.

In the real world......yes as litigation is very expensive. I'm fine with that though since there are many people who have gone more than 100k so far with no issues.

It's very conservative as it was once installed as an option on FJ Crusiers and 4Runners at dealers. I believe it's about 6psi and takes hp from 270 to about 330-350. Basically it provides the kind of power I would have liked from Toyota to begin with.

My wife’s truck just hit 60k. We’ve always been good about oil changes at 3-5k miles, mobil1 full synthetic, yada yada yada…

I changed her oil at 58k, and just did today at 60k. The oil was pretty brown at both oil changes. Am I hearing this is a nothing-burger?

(no other issues - truck has been stellar/problem-free)
