What has made my 5th gen gear shifter super squeaky?

Oh Okay, doesn’t give me much hope. But I’ll try the same.

 

Dealer looked at it too 125 K. It was coming from center console. Asked them not to tear it down. They sprayed penetrating oil. It reduced noise a lot but not completely eliminated. No charge from dealer.

@djwantke ... I wonder how much lubrication is in there at this point. Sounds like there is a gallon. Lol
Did you try unbolting the NSS first?

 

@EC15 it's not like I've unloaded a whole can on the thing, but yes I'm sure it's enough, stopped after two days actually.
I have 12mm in hand, and was just looking at NSS YouTube video again. What's made me procrastinate is how the NSS gets hung up on the corroded shaft requiring pry bar and shit. I ain't got a replacement. I posted a photo of mine up in the thread.
How did yours go? Before I even get my fingers in there to take the bolt off. Or is that you in the video LOL

 

It was a struggle. The old NSS got destroyed in the process.
If it turns out to be your NSS, make sure you have a replacement on hand.
Thats why I suggested to unplug and remove bolt first. (Leave the lock nut alone) If the squeaks stop, its your NSS. Proceed to destroy.
I would wait for the squeaks come back before checking.

Ahh okay so ur saying just unplug wire and take off the bolt, leave NSS attached to shaft. Then test shifter for squeak?

I removed the NSS wire harness and bolt.
I would say the squeak definitely seems to be decreased overall, still just a little present in certain shift sections.
Set up a video by myself from underneath, didn't take a video from inside.
Could make the argument now the NSS should be replaced. Perhaps if the NSS was completely removed there'd be zero squeak?

 

Hope yours is easier to remove than mine was.

 

Yeah for sure. Do you think the slight squeak that still remains is something to be concerned about, or will go away will removal of NSS entirely? Regardless I'm thinking bout adding a dab of white grease in a few areas to finish the console, similar to what is on some OEM linkage in there

Mine was back to normal.
I learned about the squeaky/sticky shifter as a result of the NSS as mine started to happen so I never bothered with grease or lubricants.

Hey, I’m still following but sad to say I haven’t got into the console yet. We had couple of days recently with temps well above 80 degrees and on those 2 days my squeak was gone only to return the following day with lower temps. I’m just guessing the lubricant I sprayed under the truck just creeped in a little more. Just frustrating trying to pinpoint the source. I’m almost tempted to just replace the NSS and see what happens.

 

Easier to unbolt/unplug NSS than to take apart the console.
Just to test for squeaks. Removing NSS is a different story.

 

It still squeaks after unbolting and disconnecting wire on NSS @EC15. Thats why I'm trying to get more proof that the squeak will disappear completely if I remove the NSS off the corroded shaft (and have to replace).
Or is there something still squeaking in the console is my worry. The NSS is $275 CAD that I don't want to have to spend. I thought opening up the console was easy myself, so is unbolting and disconnecting too. Perhaps it's worth spraying penetrating lube on console components regardless after years.

 

Dealer sprayed penetrating oil in my console which greatly reduced the noise. So, I think it's both the NSS and console grease. This started at about 130K on a 2016 SR5P.

 

$275 CAD? Thats crazy.
