Why I believe the 4Runner line will die in 2023.

And here I was thinking $40k was the limit (well, it was for me). The pricing on 4Rs since 2019 looks like the Dow Jones in reverse.

Did Toyota announce this? Or, is it just more speculation? Not saying it won't happen. But, I'll believe it when Toyota releases it.

I kind of agree... the shift to 4 cylinder turbos will be bad in the long run

 

If they can be reliable (big IF), they'll be fine. We already know it's an improvement in power.

 

The ridiculously huge TOYOTA on the passenger dash is hideous. Same on the Tundra. Really hope they don't put it on the new 4Runner. Same with the TRD logo on the steering wheel. Too much badging.

Removable JBL speakers is gimmicky.

Adjustable shocks in the back of the seats is interesting.

 

the anti-stall in the manual makes me a bit interested honestly. Never learned stick and didn't want to fail my way to being good at it and holding up traffic so a bit of a game changer.

 

Pretty sure thats just for trd models or just trd pro

 

I saw the removable speakers on rivian truck, I thought it would be great for camping and such. One less thing to carry and it charges when it’s placed back in the car.

 

x2. Love a good Turbo, but they are not typically reliable. I am soooooo happy I got a 2019.

 

I am not sure if Toyota he a history of turbo engines, maybe perhaps the older supras. And how did they fare in the long run.

Subaru does have some history and since Yota owns a portion of them perhaps there is some technology transfer they could have benefitted from? I think their new electric vehicle was jointly developed by Subaru and Toyota.

 

Funny you mention Subaru. I almost bought a WRX, but decided against it due to there potential boxster engine issues and the Turbo just wouldn't last for my high milage usage at the time. I went with a Mazda 3 instead, then traded the 3 for my 19 4R 5 years later.

Some of these Turbos are boosting more than they should for reliability IMO. Hopefully Toyota finds the right balance.

Yes. They can remove the AIR caps where you hook up an air compressor hose, while also having fun kicking the bottom part of the seat where the adjustment levers will undoubtedly break off.

 

Such a disappointment as expected only 4cylinder turbo. Nice styling, and yet no changes to the same type of rust prone frame. I am sure 4R will be similar. Glad I have mine now.

It’s like everything else less is more so sad.

 

All BOF Toyotas are switching to the new TNGA platform. It's a little early to know if they'll have rust issues.

 

I sure hope Toyota nails it with this turbo 4, so that everyone can stop complaining.

 

I hope they nail it also but that will take time to tell. Someone else can invest in the risk.

Sorry that BassGuy I don’t mean to be a downer I guess I am just getting old and hate to see all this change especially mandated change.

I just don’t want a 4R that sounds like my Shindaiwa weed whacker (ding ding ding ding DING DING DING).

 

Well, the v6 doesn't exactly sound great, either. It sounds good at low RPMs, and at redline, but somewhere in the middle it sounds like ass.

I 100% agree about mandated change. I don't like the government trying to make everyone buy electric vehicles. I would prefer that the manufacturers produce a product good enough to make us want them.

As far as the turbo 4; better power and better fuel economy both sound attractive to me. Reliability is an unknown. There have been reliable turbo motors before, though. I'm trying to be the optimist here.

 

Yeah optimism is good. I’ll just plan to buy one of the last 6th Gens perhaps and give them 10 plus years to get the bugs worked out

I think that our odds are okay, since they aren't going for a ridiculous amount of power. And, from what I have read, it seems like this motor has been engineered from the ground up with turbocharging in mind, which is a great thing. It's going to be a while before we really know, unfortunately. But, if they attach that motor to a manual transmission, I think a lot of people are going to take the plunge.

My '94 was stick. Even with being slow as fuck, it was enjoyable to drive because of the MT option.

 

How are they making the manual stall proof?

 

My guess is that it will manipulate the throttle and/or clutch if the RPM's drop too low.

I'm a little curious, as well. These newer manual transmission vehicles have some crazy technology in them.

 

Am I the only one that hates to see toyota using turbos in everything?
