Possible Raptor Light issue

Long time lurker, but this is my first post to the forum. I just received my new 2023 TRD Pro and had purchased a Rapter light kit on anticipation of delivery. On all of the online videos for installation, it shows the fuse plugging in to an empty space between two 10 amp fuses. On my new TRD Pro panel, I do not have an empty space like that. I have only one empty space, which is in between two 7.5 amp fuses. Please dont laugh at me as I have no idea on auto electrical or any other electrical for that matter! Can I plug in here or ? Nervous about making a mistake in my new 4 Runner. Thanks for everything!

There are tons of option on how to wire your lights. So how/ when do you want them to turn on?
For me, I didnt want them on when the car was on, but I also didnt want an extra switch. So I tapped into the LH-Low fuse which is the left hand- low beam fuse. So my lights come on when my low beams are turned on. I have seen people tap into the fog lights, DRLs, high beams, along with the INJ No2 fuse or any other switched 12v source ( switched meaning it only has power when the car is on).

Again, its all on how you want the lights to work...

 

It’s reasonable to be nervous about installing electrical equipment on a brand new car. It’s possible to do serious damage to the electronics. Cheap lights can also fail in ways that damage electronics depending on how they are wired.

 

So are you saying, it's pretty much playing with fire? I bought the raptor lights and haven't installed them for this sole purpose, nervous to cause major issues for a $70 add-on.

 

Anything aftermarket can cause issues part of the game.

Chances of it happening if you install it correctly is slim. But if you are not familiar with electrical stuff I'd suggest finding someone to do it.

 

I have a 2020 4Runner TRD Pro that has Raptor lights for about 6 months now, have had no issues whatsoever. Easy install, they come on with your headlights when you install them. Do a pre-fit so you know how you want to route and zip tie your wires so they're out of the way. Takes maybe 20 mins to do a proper job.

Here's a picture of my fuse panel if that helps you, the screwdriver is pointing to the Raptor light "add-a-fuse" that came in the kit. I extended the wire a bit to route the wire to a notch I cut in the fuse box side, lid closes and seals better this way.

 

If you know anything about electrical engineering...you'll be fine.

Hi there! 23 Pro. Wondering if you can clarify which fuse you tapped. Unclear to me from pic. Much appreciated!

 

I've crossed the bridge of installing multiple aftermarket lights and switches. It's actually not that unsafe or risky, the beauty of fuses is they blow if you go over on the wattage. And raptor lights are very low wattage when calculated. You could tap em into 7.5A-10A no prob with a add a fuse

 

So here's a picture of the fuse box cover, same orientation as the fuse box. This should help...

 

Many thanks. Will this fuse run the lights when engine on or just headlights? Trying to find one on with ignition.

 

These operate only when the headlights are on. Seems running them on the DRL circuit didn't work out for me. There's most likely a way to have them run on the DRL circuit, but I just wanted them for better visibility of my vehicle at night.

A cheap multimeter from HD will tell you that in under a minute.

 

If you find it, let us know. It's not a separate circuit on the 4Runner from what I found.

 

I'm not finding anything, I know how to work a multimeter. There are many key-on hot circuits. I'm trying to encourage the guy to buy a multimeter and do the work himself. It's a valuable skill, as opposed to asking others to do the work for you and never understanding the answer.

 

Thanks for the tip. I do have a multimeter. However, I'm a little nervous to probe the fuse box of a 23 Pro. Not an electrician, but I will ask one.

 

This tells me you don't understand how a multimeter works - which is fine. Do some research and learn how to use it. As long as you have it on the right setting, there should be no reason to be "nervous" about probing a fuse box. It's harmless.

 

Hello, have the multimeter and I switched to ohm. Which reading do you suggest to determine always on circuit?

 

You're not measuring resistance, you're measuring voltage. Turn it to DC voltage, start the truck or key-on, and find several fuses that are hot - make note of them. Then turn the truck off or key-off, and retest those same fuses. You're looking for one (of the appropriate amperage) that is dead on key-off, and 12+V key-on or running. Red lead tests the fuse, black to ground.
