I just got a 2023 ORP in April. After getting familiar with all the features it seems there could be some expensive repairs once the warranty is over. I’m not as concerned about the drivetrain as much as all the electronics. I use my 4 Runner like I did my Tacoma, mainly for hunting and road trips. I only put 9000-10000 miles per year. I called Jerry Johnson at Midwest Toyota (Kansas). I am considering getting a $0 deductible, 10 year 100,000 mile Platinum Toyota Finance extended warranty. Cost is $1360. It’s transferable to next owner and refundable on pro-rated basis. I effectively would get 7 years and 64000 miles past the (3/36) bumper to bumper warranty and 5 years and 40000 miles past the (5/60) power train warranty. I had the 7 year/100,000 Platinum warranty on my 2016 Tacoma and it was given to me by Toyota for under filling the front differential when new. That warranty covered my timing chain cover oil leak repair which was thousands. The engine had to be removed to reseal the timing chain cover. I was impressed by the ease of working with dealer service using the Toyota warranty. Any thoughts on value of $1360 for 10 year/100,000 warranty would be appreciated.

Myself personally I would get it. That seems reasonable. I have the same warranty on a 2021. Luckily I have not had to use it at all yet.

But I came from a Ford family and the warranties always paid for themselves quickly. A new screen is more than $1k for sure. Prices of labor and parts will only increase also over ten years

I see both sides of the coin though. Some may say save the cash in case you have issue roll the dice. It’s all what helps you sleep at night

Always get it because it covers door lock actuators plus you have the extra safety sense parts. You can buy it from a different dealer though so shop around.

My own dealer wanted $1800 for the 7 year/ 100,000 mile Platinum warranty with $0 deductible. This guy named Jerry Johnson in Kansas wants $1025 for same warranty. It’s the only 2 places I have gotten quotes from. I got Jerry’s name and number off this forum.

I would get it for peace of mind, even if you never use it. $1360 is a great deal for that warranty.

I’d like to hear from those who have purchased extended warranties from third party providers who have had to file a claim. How the process go?

That price sounds reasonable for the extra 3/7 year coverage; so long as your expectations match theur exclusion lists. The list of things not covered is long, and may not match what the dealer tells you verbally.
Regardless, over 10 years, chances are good that it will pay for something!

This is a great post. I did a lil research into Toyota VSA s and it said the zero deductible would only be at the dealership that sold the agreement. Also, even though I have a 2023 that originally sold on Jan2, 2023 and subsequently I bought used on Feb 28, I would be ineligible to purchase because I didn’t purchase at the same time I purchased the vehicle. Key word is I bought it “Used”. If anyone can shed any light I’d appreciate it because I plan on keeping my 4Runner till they quit refining oil.

Welcome. Extended warranties are good, but only after the manufacturers warranty expires. But that's a good price for that one. Realize though you will be paying for that warranty and using the factory warranty for the first 3 years.if you're good with that knowledge, cool.

I just read the VSA brochure Jerry sent me. You can buy these up to 36 months after vehicle sold. The warranty expires after the time period selected is reached measured from 0 miles. So a 100,000 mile warranty expires when odometer reaches 100,000 miles. Not 100,000 miles after you bought it. They can be repaired at any Toyota dealer in the US. Jerry sells $0 deductible plans only. There is a “disappearing deductible” plan that says the $100 deductible is waived if the repair is performed at the selling dealer. But this doesn’t apply to the $0 deductible plans. I don’t see any glitches. The things not covered are wear items like belts and brake pads. Also interior related items. All switches, controls, motors (window, mirror) etc are specifically listed as covered.

Remember anything that is taxable is negotiable. I would never pay for a warranty for the price they are asking.

A minor point in favor of Extended warranty, if you ORP has KDSS it would be a good choice to buy Extended warranty. In GX forum I saw one person got the KDSS repair covered by the Extended warranty. But the problem is if the 3rd party warranty company says its regular wear and tear its been a regular hydraulic system then the money is wasted.

Dealer I bought my 4Runner from didn't even offer me the Toyota extended warranty. They were selling an Allstate extended warranty, Toyota "Service Plan" (maintenance items like diff oil and spark plugs), dent and ding protection package, wheel and tire protection package and I think something else. I so no to all of it since I am planning on going through Jerry.

there is also the front diff noise/vibration issue that can make it a good choice.

Not always the case. Florida being a prime example. In Florida, by law, extended warranties are considered insurance. Their law regulates that insurance so everyone pays the same jacked up price. No discounts, no anything.

Even Jeeps factory warranty states MSRP only. https://chryslerwarrantydirect.com/free-instant-quote/

    • Florida residents are subject to MSRP Pricing due to State Laws.

My first instinct was going to be no. I have never bought extended warranties on any of my vehicles. I regretted not buying it on a BMW, other than that I feel I came out ahead. I also have a propensity of buying last MY vehicles :)
However reading more details on this warranty it appears very attractive. They do cover flats, dead battery jump, locked out of vehicle, other than covered reason towing. Essentially cost is $136 per year, which I guess is the top end AAA plan?
In my mind the worst case scenario is you paid $1360 and used $0 from it over 10 years. If invested that would be $2936 (nominal) at 8%. That is the opportunity cost you are paying.
What you are getting in return is that risk isn't borne by you for 10 years.

I think it is worth it, and I might consider it myself. I wonder if the cost rises as the vehicle ages -- i.e. is the cost same if I buy it now vs 35 months from now, just before my vehicle becomes ineligible.

I don't know how it is with Toyota's warranty, but with Dodge's warranty, any vehicle over 12 months old or over 12,000 miles, whichever comes first, the price goes up and continues to rise as more time/ miles are added.

My feelings exactly. $136/year as insurance cost against huge repair bill. My Tacoma timing chain cover reseal was billed at $5000 and covered under Platinum $0 deductible VSA. The dealer did not ask me about maintenance records before repair. I need to confirm prior maintenance was NOT required to be done at dealer. The free limited lifetime powertain warranty given at time of sale seemed worthless. I called that company about my timing chain cover leak. They said if I did not have all service specified in maintenance manual they would decline repair. Even if I didn’t do tire rotations! You must have dealer log for each specified item. The Toyota Finance VSA makes no mention of who does maintenance or when.

So can’t you just buy from a dealer out of state?? I don’t have that problem in my state, but I bought out of state as the selling dealer did not offer the warranty. Next time I shopped around in and out of state, took the best offer, out of state, to the selling dealer and they matched it.

You can, if they're licensed in Florida and you'd still have to be charged full MSRP, unless you had a non Florida address you can use, but that's another can of worms. Other than that, you can't bypass that law.

I think Florida is the only state with a retarded law like that.

It's law that it's MSRP only. No discounts, no ADM increases. Everyone pays the same price no matter what.

When I bought my TRD ORP in December of 2021 I went in saying no warranties, it's a Toyota. After taking a look during delivery and pondering on it, I purchased the extended warranty for a piece of mind. Mainly the new head unit and the TSS.

so the law that you inappropriately referred to, actually was beneficial during that time.

The first time my XREAS crapped out, I was glad I had it.

The second time XREAS dived, I ditched it.

So yes, I’d buy it again!
