Speedometer numbers don't align with marks

I hope someone has an idea about this. I have a 2013 4runner Limited sold and used in Canada up until 3 years ago when it was sold into the U.S. by auction. I bought if from the US owner/dealer. The speedometer numbers do not align with the gauge marks - everything is off. The 20 mph increments should align with the heavier lines surrounding the numbers. Here's a photo. If anyone has an idea of how to fix this that would be wonderful. Thanks in advance!

 

White numbers are MPH. Red numbers are KPH.
The lower 48, us, don't use KPH, yet.

But we use 4.0 L instead of 244 cubic inches.

Just different forms of measurement with close to the same outcome.

 

Yes - but the white marks around the outside should align with the white mph numbers. Am I supposed to ignore the white marks and ballpark my speed based on the white mph numbers? That can't be right. Why even have the calibrated marks? Something wrong here..

 

Maybe this will help.. each 20 mph increment should fall on a thick mark, but doesn't. 20 appears to be falling on the 15 mph (thinner line) spot. 40 is halfway between a thick and thin line. 60 is almost to a thick line. 80 is on a thing line. Does not make sense...

 

I wouldn't call spedo calibrated.

I mean how far off are we talking?

 

It looks to me like they line up with the 20 KPH marks. I suspect the only way to "fix" it would be to install a gauge cluster out of a US version.

 

Well, each 20 kph increment aligns with a thick line, maybe because it was intended for Canadian market. The mph scale is correctly aligned with the kph scale, but the major and minor lines are all for kph.

 

Yeah, that looks really weird. They might line up with the smaller kph marks, but thats weird to use the hash marks with the “secondary” numbers.

Also,is that a 4runner gauge cluster, or aftermarket. It doesnt look OE. If it’s 4 wheel drive, do the annunciators lights work to indicate center diff lock, 4lo etc?

You're simply stuck with a KM speedo and looking at mine this evening, the only way to change that is to replace the speedo, and that looks like it would probably involve replacing the entire instrument cluster - very expensive, me thinks.

Does your digital speed display MPH or KPH? If KPH, you might be able to change that either if possible in your system yourself, otherwise maybe a dealer required change to your system. Otherwise, I think you need to just ignore the lines and watch the needle and MPH notations.

And, practice mentally converting KPH to MPH. In simple terms, 100 kph = 62 mph. 100 mph = 161 kph.

 

Get a speedometer app. on your phone to compare it with the numbers on your gauge.
Nothing much else can be done that doesn't involve $$$.

 

Agreed. The white marks align with the red kph numbers. Trail Runnah's pic shows the U.S. version, with the kph numbers not aligned to the marks.

 

Thank you Trail Runnah for posting a photo of how the gauge should look with marks aligned to numbers. RunningBear and others - I think you are probably correct in that it is a Canada cluster and the only solution is replacement with a US cluster. The marks are painted on - not a digital display - and they more closely align to the kph numbers. I believe there is an option in the infotainment display settings to switch to kpm and I may try that (and memorize kpm to mph numbers - at least for typical US speed limits). If I just go by the mph numbers and ignore the marks it may make sense to get a speedometer app on my phone to see if the numbers are accurate. Thank you all for contributing to this post. It was driving a little bonkers. I now know my options.

 

That's a speedometer for Canada, looks like it aligns with you Km/h pretty good. As it should for being a Canadian vehicle, they don't drive in MPH. Should have bought a US version 4Runner.

 

What's weird is some of the numbers, KM included, sort of align with the major marks, but not all...anyone else on here with a 2013 Canadian 4R who can post a photo of their speedometer?
