i haven’t mounted the lights but felt compelled to test the lights and fbc led high beam harness today.

gladly the headlights work. i didn’t test them when purchased but the seller is trust worthy.

as expected the functional modes facilitated by the harness work. low beam, DRL, and shutters (high beam) tested ok. great quality harness and saves me from the pain of splicing in a relay. worth every penny.

one small functional note for those who are considering the led high beam harness. drls will turn off when flash to pass is activated since the 9005 bulb is isolated to pwm through 87a. it’s an amusing behavior but some may be better suited with the quad high beam harness if they don’t want this behavior.

So I have a really dumb question...if I actually buy new 2021 headlights from toyota (led low/halogen high) and the fbc harness no shutter - do I need to purchase anything else from toyota (ie dust cover or something like that) or am I able to use everything else from my 2020 headlights (except purchase new led bulbs for low)? I may be overthinking everything, just getting super confused, sorry in advance for ignorance.

LED emitters are part of the assembly for low beams, no bulbs there.

The no shutter harness isn’t as nice as the quad high beam option if your headlights are pinned for a shutter. No good reason not to use the led projector for high beam duty that I can think of. Best to buy the headlights first, though, so you can be sure you have 3 terminals in the connector vs 2.

The only other thing I can think of is that the headlights may not ship with the install brackets. I wish I had taken a picture, but basically there's a injection-molded plastic bracket that attaches to each headlight before it can be installed on the truck. I had to pull it off my old halogen assemblies and swap it onto my new LED ones, because the seller had done the same thing when they got their aftermarket assemblies. You have them on your truck now, so no need to order.

Mine came with everything needed. I just took out the old ones, plugged in the harness and bolted up the new ones. I went with the LED low and halogen high as well. I just put in the really good halogen bulbs (pretty sure I posted the tech specs further back) and am super happy with the results.

Any chance you guys would be willing to sell a harness to a Canadian?
I have a 2017 Limited and just ordered 2022 OEM headlights for it.
Tried to order from and it wouldn’t accept my address.

Thanks man, really appreciate the offer but I already got help from a kind soul.
Should be able to upgrade the headlights in a week or two :)

    Lots…
Forgive my ignorance, re-read this thread three times.

I have a 2021 ORP. What difference is there with this upgrade? Are the 2022+ headlights that much different?

    Best,
    Walter

the big difference is the high beams in your case. your truck uses the halogen bulbs for DRL and highbeams. 22+ DRL uses the halogens while high beams are the LEDs.

I'm confident that the low beam performance between the generations is similar if not the same, though I can't speak on the high beam performance.

crashnburn80 on TW says the hybrid version is the best because using HIR bulbs for the highbeams out perform the bi-LED highbeams.

Oh yeah, since I just got a few of these (for my '18 Odyssey) I thought I'd share this post on TW:

I believe they tested out better than Toshiba HIR?

Link to test results for Korean made Sylvania 9011.

Yep, 7% brighter than Toshiba and $20 vs roughly double the price from the guy I get my Toshiba's from so I ordered a few for me.

    Just checking..
Do we have any luck for 2021 and newer bi-led headlight owners to have a wire harness to power the reflector bulb with highbeams?

Even just one 12v power with highbeam is enough. Would be super awesome not having to remove the bumper and headlight housing.:amen:

I've had a few discussions with my crew on this topic. The hard part is that I don't see how to do things with one relay, I think two are needed and if they don't switch at the exact same instant I think the fuse would blow. The closest design I can think of is a high/low seat heat system where it switches from parallel (high) to series (low) wiring with the switch. But that is one module which has full control of all signals vs trying to just hijack the 9005 bulbs when high beams are on.

What would I do if I owned a 2021 T4R? Re-route DRL to some other spot (pod backlight or SSC1 or switchback in the turn or some other setup?) and use the 9005 as a 9011 for high beam only. Or, alternatively, completely take over the entire DRL output and figure out how to dim +12v via PWM that can handle DRL current. The latter is hard, the DD dimmers are not quite capable of the current.

    Hi David,
As of now I use the 9005s with a simple lightbar relay harness using a separate switch on dash. I have no clue how to get a highbeam trigger wire. I'm scared to mess with the existing wires come to the headlight housing. :(:(
Wish there is an easy solution for scary amateurs like my self.

So you've detached the OEM 9005 connectors and let them dangle or taped them off? Hence no DRL at all?

High beam trigger is straightforward, it's the yellow lead in this picture, not sure what color the OEM wire is.

Yes sir. DRL wire is removed. I'm using grill lights for that in case a cop stop me. LoL

I tried to look in the stock wire but it seems pretty hidden. Will see if I get any luck.

I believe it's position #1 but it's super hard to see the numbers, especially once these connectors get dirty. The photo reference is likely easier to follow. One positap on that as your trigger should prove out the viability. If you need a single T for that to feed your relay, I could do it, not hard at all.

The loss of DRL wouldn't appear to be a legal problem in the US (I don't know of any states which mandate daytime running light use as many older vehicles still don't have them) but if you drive in Canada maybe that's more of a concern?

An ideal solution for me would be fully plug and play, impossible to get wrong, and works perfectly without any loss of functionality. I can see how some might be OK losing DRL but I don't want to make a product which does that explicitly, I'd much rather have DRL retained and match the behavior of older T4R.

Really, the DD dimmer, if it could handle 3-5x the current, might be a good solution. But this is so specific to the T4R that there isn't much upside for anyone to produce something.

Thank you very much sir. Let me have another look in the weekend to see if I can locate a trigger wire if there's room to put the leads of my multimeter.

Unlike my old 4Runner I'm scared to remove the bumper on my 2021 with all the Toyota safety sense BS for a better view. Will see how it goes. This is why I really love the old system. I used a simple Y connector on one of my 9005 wires and it triggered my auxilary lights when highbeams are on.
    upload_2023-5-17_13-36-48.jpg

    Edit -

For the DRLs, I purchased these wires to do some research. Maybe the PWM modules you posted might help me.

Just something to note, Tory's setup for aux driving lights uses a rocker for on/off/auto (with high beam). Because, technically, at least in the US, your setup would have been illegal. Of course it's also possible to not use high beams around the police but if driving somewhere where they might be and using auto high beams, it might be nice to have a way to disable the extra lights.

Granted, I think the US auto lighting laws are in need of some refinement as we start seeing more and more matrix LED headlights.

100%. This trigger will not go directly to the lights. it will go to the switch. So the aux lights will be on only when highbeams on + switch on dash is on. If the switch on dash is off only the factory highbeams will be on.

On your 21 Pro, I believe you'll meet the letter of the law, you're allowed two "bulbs" per side with high beams on (3rd gen Taco halogen is two such halogen bulbs, both on with high beams).
Your setup with ditch lights and bottom grille on with high beams would not.
I think you already know all that, just spelling it out for anyone else.
I could see wanting a kill switch for quad high beams but I don't really think that's terribly necessary, kind of a waste in my book, no cop is going to know the differences between 2020 T4R and 2021 T4R as far as high beams and if they do know that level of detail, they would have to be in quite the bad mood to write a ticket for that. Whereas light bars and ditch lights are much more obviously modifications.

The DD PWM doesn't handle the current needed for this purpose so I wouldn't try it out and if you do I'd be very very very cautious about fusing it and monitoring heat and shorting.

I think a DPDT relay to switch between parallel and series is probably the best path forward but I just kind of don't think the effort is justified by the relatively minor value of more high beam output from the stock location. I'd probably prefer to focus on DD SS5's or something like that.

And I'm not even sure series wiring with 9011 HIR's is "ok" for dawn/dusk. Add in the pain part of burning out 9011 HIR's with DRL use, though the cheaper 9011's help some there.

If @mynameistory were to nudge me in a direction, that might help. Someone want to buy him a '21 Pro and transfer over all his mods to get the ball rolling? :)

    Just got a set of 2022 TRD Pro's for a 2017 Limited
Firstly, just confirming these have the 3 terminals and are indeed bi-LED

Why is the Quad High Beam option the "ideal option"? And if so, is that the go-to?
Looking to order a harness this weekend :)

Three terminals pinned in the black square connector of the bottom photo means you have shutter control.

    upload_2023-5-20_4-57-31.jpg

quad high beam is max high beam output. LED high beam is 2021+ stock behavior. No shutter is 2020- behavior.

Thanks for the quick reply and confirmation!

Any downsides with quad? Quad is not stock behavior anywhere? Are most people opting for quad?

You gotta decide what is right for you. Someone who has quad high beams might be able to take some photos with one side high beam disconnected to show the difference.
