1. I feel myself being COOL
2. under hood it looks COOL
3. engine sound COOL (do not use in getaway vehicle)

Get some Splitfire plugs and Accel ignition coils. Also use fuel line magnets and a grounding kit.

 

Below, the “mpg” I got and that was before I had installed the trd CAI. I think it’s safe to say that the trd CAI has decreased my consumption by 14 mpg

The secret is mixing Slick 50 with Z Max. However keep the Turbonator off of your engine because no mortal man can handle that much power and economy.

This. From LC to Deming, behaving @ 65, mpg near 20.4. Driving as needed, @ 79 or so, about 18 or so. I 10 in the desert is boring...

 

I’ve noticed a recent increase in my mpg, likely due to the changeover to summer gasoline. I get around 22 when that happens, every year. Drops to about 20.5-21 in the winter.

 

What happens when asphalt is hot? If you have a snorkel instead, how much does MPG suffer with intake so high? I find that golfers, fishermen & offroaders are all equally gullible as to what equipment can do for them……

 

I've seen that pattern in all my vehicles.
My average is 20.9 over just under 2,000 miles and 3 weeks; but I imagine that will change after the newness wears off and I pay less minute attention to my driving habits.

 

You could have included all car enthusiasts.

 

It might actually improve, depending on your driving habits. These tend to get better after a few thousand miles.

 

that's where mine dies. My commute is back roads at 50mph, gets decent mpg there but at 75mph it's significantly worse.

I could probably use fuelly or something but I've just got a tab in a spreadsheet that I use. 18.26 over the life of the vehicle (actually, lower than that now since I filled up saturday and have not entered that info yet...and I towed a uhaul trailer most of that tank and had a cargo box on the roof for the rest of it. Only have about 4500 miles so far though.

I will say the computer has been really close to my hand calcs so far...

 

A cold air intake supposedly causing better MPGs makes zero sense. Your vehicle's computer is trying to maintain a specific air/fuel (A/F) ratio at all times, and the volume of a cylinder bottom dead center is static. If you theoretically remove restrictions on the intake and add more air, then the computer is going to add more fuel to maintain that A/Fratio.

Not only that, but density of the air matters too (i.e. why you have mass air flow sensors on the intake). Colder air is more densely packed with oxygen, so again, the computer compensates with more fuel. My guess is that this "cold" air intake is actually a warm air intake and that's why OP might be seeing better fuel economy.

 

Like you said, cold air is denser so more fuel can be burnt to achieve more power. However i think more cold air also means more efficient combustion so less fuel used to achieve the same amount of power you would need for warmer air.

Honestly, though, there are plenty of enthusiasts who know better than to believe the claims the manufacturers of those products make. I just meant that it's not specific to the off-roading community.

A well engineered aftermarket intake might help the vehicle breathe a little easier. But, it's doubtful that it would make it more fuel efficient considering the manufacturers are trying to squeeze every last MPG out of these vehicles for CAFE regulations among other reasons.

 

I got that normally before my chonky tires. State highways, 62mph. You just had a dirty air filter

 

I am not sure how I ended up here...stupid is as stupid does. I drive a 4Runner - I think I am on a 4Runner forum still. Who the hell cares about MPG. My chihuahua is meaner than hell, but come and pet her anyway, she won't bite...really.
