ordered 4runner, can't wait. i feel like a little kid on christmas eve waiting for santa. lol.
but my question is: what are people doing these days for rust inhibitor? is ziebart still a thing? there are some rattle can fog type DIY kits. those have to be reapplied every couple of years. what options are there for rust protection?
    thanks

Do not - under any circumstances - fall for the Ziebart line of crap. I can't begin to tell you how bad their product and their application is. To top that, it's over-priced and based on super high-pressure salespeople. And their "free annual resprays?" They're not free. You just pay for them up front. And all they do is cover up the rust that's already started.

Here's what I did based on living in the heart of the rust belt for my entire life:

Welcome. A routine weekly/monthly undercarriage detail will go a long way.

Startrek has it right. Woolwax and/or fluid film. I spent the better part of a day coating everything but the exhaust and brakes under my 4runner when I got it. I used woolwax everywhere including inside the frame, but i hear fluid film is thinner so it would make more sense in the frame. 5 years later and the only rust is the exhaust and a few random bolt heads i missed. I do crawl under each fall and touch up any spots that look like theyre losing their coating. If you go this route dont wash your car underneath which would blast away the Woolwax. Mine has never seen a car wash and looks perfect after 5 years in Wisconsin.

I'm a Krown customer. Take it in once a year before winter. Check to see if there is a shop in your area that carries it. There are other threads on the forum about it.

PB Surface shield is another option.

Krown is good. But you need to keep in mind that the product is only as good as the applicator. I use Krown and tip the employee to spray the s*** out of the frame inside and out. But I still follow up myself and spot coat the whole truck inside and out as best I can. I also remove the spare tire and skid plates before it goes in for it's annual spray. Have noticed though that their spray can product seems to be stickier than what is sprayed in their shops. Guessing they thin it down it for ease of application. I feel good between my OCD and annual treatments though. After almost 2 years my '22 has zero rust living in a salt belt.

thank you all, great information here, i really appreciate it. i am curious about blaster surface shield. it is advertised as a two year product as well as being able to creep/seep into more areas. that link to how you did applied everything is great. i think i will shoot regular PB blaster into those cam adjuster bolts and hope for the best there, (i really don't want to mess with the alignment right off the boat). I too live in the rust belt, Illinois, probably one of the worst states in the country (not just for rust). Are the rattle cans of fluid film, surface shield a good option or do i need to get a compressor and spray gun setup?
thanks everyone for sharing your knowledge and experiences. C'mon Santa

Cans will get pretty expensive. I used a bit over a gallon of wool wax the first time i sprayed. The better wool wax spray gun has hoses that you can feed into the frame which will be hard to replicate with a spray can as well.

Cans work fine, spray gun and compressor is just easier and faster.

How close are you to Homer Glen IL? The car care nut Toyota guy just opened a shop their. He did a video about his buddy protecting his new Lexus GX frame for the brutal winters and weather. You could contact them and get a referral these guys knows their stuff! I live in another bad state in more ways than rust MI. If I was closer to Chicago inwlils go down to have my frame treated. Below is w link to his new shop

I've also had good luck with Krown. Mine goes in for it's third (second annual) treatment this month. Will take photos and post.
