2022 4R TRD Pro Exhaust

I recently bought a 2022 4R TRD Pro. Within the first few minutes of the test drive my wife commented on "irritating" the exhaust sound. We are planning an 8,000 mile trip to Alaska next summer so we need to figure out how to address the drone sound.
I've read a lot of forum comments about the exhaust drone on the TRD Pro. Some love the sound of the TRD Pro exhaust and some don't. I've seen some recommend Magnaflow and some recommend Borla as good replacements but there seems to be disagreement on whether they actually improve things. Some say their Borla/Magnaflow made it quieter and some say it actually seemed louder (??).

Have any of you replaced the OEM exhaust on a TRD Pro that can comment on the change in exhaust tone and volume? I am looking for something that will remove/reduce the drone at certain RPM's. I am not looking for an exhaust that sounds tough (I have a vette for that fix). I am not looking for horsepower increase or MPG improvements, although that would be welcome if it is a side effect. I just want to find something that addresses the drone.

 

Go to Home Depot. Wait in the parking lot with some tools. When you see a 4Runner pull in, ask him if you want to swap exhaust. The guy would probably do it in the parking lot in a heart beat.

 

I experimented with everything until I got so damn tired of the drone and end up with an OEM. I went to Lowe's instead of home depot and sure enough it was an easy swap.

Someone will switch with you or just remove the exhaust only and put the OEM. Your ears will thank you.

 

you can get a Muffler Silencer they do reduce the sound pretty good, there are cheap ones to watch out for because they restrict the exhaust flow thus decrease in performance and the good ones cost a bit more below is a picture of a good one that is easy to install then the next one is the "auger style" that works well but a bit more to install. added comment- I have used the cone type for one of my boat exhaust because it did not have a muffler at all.

 

Find someone to swap exhausts. Where are you located?

 

I have a 2023 PRO. The best option is to swap to OEM stock. You can easily sell the PRO Exhaust. I understand an 8000 K trip might annoy some.

 

I have a 22 pro. I swapped mine to oem & had a muffler shop cut & weld the rear flange to keep the side exit tailpipe. If you don't care about the side pipe then the swap is the easiest option.

 

Is the drone seriously that bad? I’ve been thinking of buying one but the YouTube videos don’t really help

 

Yeah it sucks and it’s at 2-3K RPM.

 

I'd suggest driving one. Personally, it does not bother me.

 

I am in West Michigan, near Grand Rapids.

 

Honestly, 90% of the time it's fine. Driving around town I don't notice it. Every once in a while on the highway.i will be at a certain speed and it is a bit annoying. If I had hour after hour of it though, it would give me a headache. I agree with the other post, drive one and see. YMMV.

I have a 2021 Pro with 37,000 miles on it and I have become accustomed to it, but would have preferred a normal / standard exhaust noise!

 

I don't this Youtube can help as I think almost all phones and camera's used to record can pick that drone accurately. Have to experience in person on a highway drive.

I don't feel comfortable cutting and welding the resonator. If there is a bolt-on solution even more quieter one I would love to swap it and keep the factory one if I decide to sell my Pro.

 

I think instead of welding on a resonator, the best bet would be to just get a oem (non pro) exhaust. You can find them dirt cheap on fb marketplace if you keep an eye out. Only thing that sucks is the standard exhaust is rear exiting and not side exit.

 

Don't mess with a resonator. What you need is cross sectional area and lots of holes. Look at the OEM area vs the PRO and you will see why the area is needed in this chamber. I was very disappointed that Toyota missed the mark with this Pro exhaust. My 2c.

I thought the same after reading this thread...it had a jba catback. But I honestly don't think it droned. I think the drone is more about what your used to.

My 4runner(non pro) is about the quietest vehicle I ever owned.

 

I had a Flowmaster which droned pretty good at certain RPM's. I pick up my new 4Runner ORP tonight and am curious to see what its like driving a quiet vehicle. I have never had a vehicle (For long anyways) without a loud muffler. Before the Tacoma I had a straight piped Subbie, that was drone city haha. Could barely hear my wife talk

 

Back in my Subie Daze, Borla Hush and Stromung's were my favorite cat-backs, mated to a cat-less downpipe of course! No drone or rasp, just deep and burbly goodness.

 

I think with a pickup you have some isolation because the outlet is at the bed.

 

Put a stock 4runner exhaust on, the rest are just expensive, annoying noisemakers

 

No one will feel the "+5hp" on these heavy rigs anyways. It's still slow as shit.

 

I don't really notice the drone at all, even with the back window down. Maybe it's the 5" foam mattress laying down in the back that works as a sound-deadening agent? I also don't mind the little grumble it gives on acceleration.

The side exit is a huge plus with the pups hanging out the back window. I always worried in my Limited with the rear exit exhaust.

 

Love the side exit as well.
I don’t feel the exhaust is too loud or drones too much during regular driving. The only time it is slightly obnoxious to me is at 9000 ft going up a hill at 75-80mph when it downshifts to 4th or 3rd. But I can live with it and it’s not like I’m doing this drive everyday anyways.

 

I have an MT10 with an Austin Racing Exhaust no db killer.
Whoever knows what I’m talking about, that thing is LOUD, mainly at 11k rpm!

but then I also wear custom earplugs when I ride so it’s not all that bad otherwise I’d be deaf by now

 

The side exit is a plus for sure when the rear window is down

 

When shopping for a new 4R last year I was not hampered by price, I had the green light from the “boss” to buy whatever 4R I wanted. Considered a Pro but that droning exhaust and the awful roof rack were the major drawbacks. I realize both can be swapped, but why bother when I can get a loaded ORP for 5K less.

 

Thank you reminding me that I have to allocate money for the roof rack replacement when its time to lift my TRD Pro. TRD Pro roof rack most likely won't fit my garage door.
In favor of TRD Pro, I do like the JBL system. Probably the only thing I like on TRD Pro.
