@Matt83 Do you know what that tapping sound is by any chance? Fuel Injectors? And also why that at that specific RPM range. Appreciate your response man :)

I think the “car care nut” said that noise is the vvti. Something about it using engine oil as a hydraulic fluid to operate. Maybe at certain low rpms the system doesnt have normal running pressure and it clatters more. Something along those lines

@McSpazatron Ok thank you, do you notice the same sound at that RPM on your 4runner?

That sounds like my 2023. The 1GR-FE is often described as sounding like a diesel engine.

Are these sounds new to you or are you new to the vehicle?

My 2014 does it and will vary with different brand of oils. Amsoil and Penzoil Ultra Platinum are the quietest.

I've been using Mobil 1 ESP 5W30 euro spec gasoline and diesel oil since last oil change about 1000 miles ago and may stay with this one, 4R is dead quiet at all rpms.

The 1GR is noisy as fuck. It will always sound like you have a tick, no matter what oil you use. It's just part of the weird charm.

If your 1GR is dead quiet, there's probably something wrong with it. ;)

I think I just never really paid much attention because I always had the music cranked. Then one day I didn’t have my phone and I started paying attention to all these noises haha

The 1GR has been noisy since 05 when it was introduced in the 2nd gen Tacoma. It has shim under bucket valvetrain to make sure they’re all noisy.

Yup. Drove a 2010 Tacoma TRD Sport with the 1GR-FE (single VVTi) for 12.5 years before I got the 2023 4Runner Limited I have now. The 1GR-FE with dual VVTi in the Limited sounds just about like the Tacoma did. Not the smoothest sounding engine - but they run and run and run. I changed the oil every 5K miles in the Tacoma and it had 145K miles on it when I gave it to my son. It is his daily driver now and it still runs/drives great. I have no doubt he will drive it to 200-250K. I got so used to the engine sound driving the Tacoma that I don't even notice it in the 4Runner Limited I drive now. I didn't buy the 4Runner for its quiet engine/smooth ride (although the ride in the Limited is smoother than the Tacoma was). They are trucks - and they sound/ride like trucks. I've owned some pretty decent vehicles (quality wise) - and I drove them for a long time. Had a 1990 Acura Integra that I drove for 12 years/150K miles. Drove a 2002 Honda Civic for 8 years/100K miles before I gave it to one of my sons. Wife had a 2006 Honda Odyssey mini-van that she drove for about 10 years/140K miles. These were all really good quality vehicles that we took care of and that gave us virtually no problems over the time we owned them. BUT - every one of these vehicles degraded to the point that they declined significantly with respect to ride/drive quality. They ran - but at the end they just did not drive anywhere near as good as when they where 0-6 years old. The 2010 Tacoma is the first truck/4WD vehicle I ever owned - and I'll never own anything else. That truck drove as good/solid when I gave it to my son as it ever did. Not sure about all of you in he rest of the country - but the roads here in Missouri SUCK. 4WD trucks/SUVs that are designed and built to handle off road driving just hold up better than less robust unibody cars/suvs. I'll forego the feeling of driving on a cloud in silence all day every day for the reliability/robustness of a 4Runner.
