    Fellow 4Runnians,

Glad to hear your experience with sound deadening the doors and hatch. Noticeable improvement when driving or not? Reduction of road noise?

Have a bit of extra time coming up and might put in the effort but not sure if it's worth it. Appreciate your insights. Yes, I've seen the youtube videos and read on the forum. Just want to hear from people who have actually had it done or done it themselves about their personal experience.

    Cheers!

I laid down some sound deadening material in the doors and hatch around two years ago. The car is quieter overall but just barely. At highways speeds my car is super loud anyway due to my setup so it's hard to tell. My MT tires, roof rack and the position of my light bar are really loud on the freeway, plus a lot of sound still gets in from the windows. If I could find a way to double pane side windows that would really help. So as far as making it feel like a Lexus, no, but the audio quality has really improved. More sound seems to make it inside the cabin and there's definitely more bass now on my non-JBL system. If you knock on the door panels you can really get the idea of how the material helps isolate sound.

Also, nobody talks about it but my latch is quite a bit heavier with the sound deadening material. I've thought about swapping out the support struts or whatever those are called.

If I had to do it again I think I would. I used Noico 80mil. Applied it with a steel roller and it took a few hours.

Yep I did the same, I used Killmat and a steel roller which is essential. I did all doors, hatch, and rear floor. I highly recommend it. Just makes everything seem tighter, zero rattles from sound system.
I also like the heavy clunk when I close the doors. Without it, it sounded a bit tinny.

I plan to do the rear cargo area while I have all the carpet out. My twin 8” OEM Audio Plus subs could use the help and I want to eliminate vibrations if I can. I have a water leake issue to solve first.

I’m actually impressed how quiet and solid my stock 4R is.

Great insight. Makes sense. The windows are thin on our cars and probably lack the acoustic layer.
Greatly appreciate your insight. I used Noico 210mil on our Sienna van and it worked moderately well (along the floor). Still yet to do the doors. I'm wanting to focus on the 4Runner right now and helping to hear the sound more clearly but without spending a ton.

Appreciate your insight. Not to be rude at all but the precise request of the thread was for those who have actually done this. I appreciate you but don't want the thread heading into a debate. That's not the purpose of the thread. Appreciate you and hope your day is going well.

I will be doing my 4 runner when I get some time in the next few months. On all my previous cars I did the sound deadening and it was a noticeable improvement in road noise and sound quality. I used the dynamat products for the past 20 years and it seems pretty good.

I installed vibration dampener (Dynamat) in all 4 doors and the rear hatch lid a few years ago. It did make the doors sound more solid when they close. I didn’t feel there was a dramatic improvement in actual sound deadening, though. I tried installing sound absorption material (Second Skin) on top of the Dynamat, but the material was too heavy and wouldn’t stick well to the Dynamat.
