I updated my 2 iPhones to iOS 16.4.1 last week and immediately had issues with CarPlay in the head unit of my 2021 TRD OR. All of the CarPlay features work except for phone calls that now have scrambled audio that is unusable. I’ve tried deleting my OR from my phone and re connecting with no resolution.

Also, CarPlay still works fine on my old Honda Ridgeline that has an aftermarket Pioneer head unit.

Has anyone else had this problem and if so, have you found a fix?

    Cheers,
    Bob

Is the scrambled audio when you talk, hear the other person talk, or both? Is the firmware for your head unit up to date?

    Is your Toyota App up-to-date?

I'm scared to update my phone now!

I just saw an article about this a few days ago on a tech website. I don't know where, so maybe google the question and see if a fix has been found.

On newer vehicles like Bobby’s and your ‘21s I think the software will update itself over the air. You can go into the menus and choose a setting to update automatically. See your Multimedia System Manual for details.

For those of us who have disabled the DCM, the automatic update won’t work. But there is a (poorly documented) process for updating the software via a USB drive. First go through the menus in your truck to find out your system’s model id. (Menu-setup-general-software update). Record your model ID and version number. Then go to this page to download the latest software version. You input your vin, select the radio button for your model id, and a drop-down will show which version of the software will be installed. Of course you only want to do go further with the process if your system isn’t running the latest software.

Another note - the system is very particular about the formatting of the USB drive. I think it’s FAT16, but I’m not sure.

By disabling DCM, do you mean via antenna removal? Or do you mean via phone call to toyota?

Yes, I checked my head unit yesterday and there were no available updates indicating it is current.

Also, the scrambled phone call audio is on both incoming and outgoing calls.

Im not sure what the next step might be but would sure appreciate any insights others might have..

    Cheers,
    Bob

Either one. The over air update comes through the DCM. If you press the SOS and get a message that says you need a subscription, I think it will still update. But if it says you have to have your DCM reactivated then I don’t think it will update.

A couple of other things to try: restart the multi media system by either starting it and holding the power button down or turn it off and hold the power button down (I can’t remember which). Or you might disconnect the battery for a while.

FYI…I read your post and knowing I had already upgraded to iOS 16.4.1 I decided to go put my CarPlay thru some tests and had no issues (2023 TRD Pro w/ Ottocast U2-AIR wireless dongle)

    Update..... Problem Solved!!

When I shared that my head unit had the latest firmware, I based the comment on having checked for OTA updates via the head unit and it said it had the latest. This morning, I was on my pc and decided to check with Toyota on-line and see if I could confirm my head unit had the latest firmware. Well, on-line had a later firmware than what was showing on my head unit. So, I downloaded the new firmware to a memory stick along with the update instructions and updated my head unit to the latest. And, now the phone works as it should...

Lesson learned - the firmware version that the head unit says is on it may not be the latest even if it says it is. Check on-line if you run into the same issue as I did.

    Cheers,
    Bob

Thanks for the update. Were there any noticeable updates with the latest firmware, or all behind-the-scenes?

Nothing that I've seen so far but I did the update during a break between business calls (working from home) so haven't spent much time with it yet. It did properly make a phone call and a couple of the other functions that I checked were still working as expected. If I find anything wonky, I'll add to this thread....

    Cheers,
    Bob
