    Hello all,

Posting to inform you guys of availability of tuning support from YotaWerx Tuning for the 4th gen 4Runner with the 4.7L v8.

The main YotaWerx Tuning thread is in the 5th gen section, although hopefully perhaps some sort of Performance and Tuning section can be made for it to be moved there since our services aren't exclusive to the 5T4R. See below:

    https://www.4runners.com/threads/yotawerx-tuning-services-development-and-feedback.21473/

The v8 4Runner below is my personal vehicle, which served as the primary test vehicle for tune development.

Updated: VFTuner currently supports the VVTI versions of the 4.7L, so YotaWerx has full support for the 2005-09 v8 vvti 4R, 2wd and 4wd.

    Future support/development includes the 2003-04 v8 non-vvti once VFTuner releases additional/expanded K-line ECU support.

Shawn is one of several 4th gen 4Runner 4.7L v8 owners who have reached out to YotaWerx to get their truck #yotawerxtuned and is now benefitting from a great improvement in drivability and performance!

I clicked on the links throughout this thread, but admittedly did not read through the entire threads… what are the hp/tq increases this tune provides? I saw the 2005 and below v8’s aren’t supported, when will those be added?

    2005 vvti is supported.

2003-04 non-vvti has a couple supported ECUs for us to build our tune on, but we've submitted to VFTuner the necessary ECU files for the most up-to-date ECU versions so that everyone can run the tune. It'll just require an ECU update via Toyota Techstream (or your dealership can do it).

Regarding power/torque, we haven't run our tune on the dyno yet. The posted dynographs in the linked thread are for the 4.0L 5T4R. We'd estimate/hope for 15whp and 20wtq on premium fuel for the 4.7L, but you just don't know until it's on the rollers, who knows.

If this is something that people would want done, we can look into getting the dyno done.

I know, we get asked about it daily.

The stock tune is sufficiently different from the VVTI version in terms of ignition that I don't want to just push it out and call it good without testing, and unfortunately I can't also in good conscience ask someone to pay the currently exorbitant price to tune theirs as a tester unless I get someone local in El Paso here and flash it myself.

Edit: the non-vvti stock ignition is actually higher than the stock values for the VVTI models. So for what it's worth, I do not believe our current tune would run poorly on the non-vvti models. But not verifying isn't my style.

I also have not seen any transmission control currently available for the non-vvti ECUs, so it'd be an engine tune.

I'm in Tucson and could make the trip out there sometime. Be a few months before I can do that tho. Mine would be interesting since I run the VVT plastic intake on a non-vvt engine and have the 12 hole injectors. Also doing DT long tubes at some point.

Any update to the 03-04 v8’s?

I have 241k miles so may be passed the point of trying to mod the engine and make it worth anything though, lol.

Just been looking for a good opportunity to pick up another tester for development for those K-line non VVTI 4.7's. You'd be perfect actually, if you're willing, since your location is listed as San Diego. We have partners in San Diego and Coronado. Would make it really convenient.

Bummer, I used to live in San Diego and specifically on Coronado. My daughter is still out there but I'm in Tucson now.

How long would you need the vehicle? It’s our baby hauler and my Sudo DD (do have a Tacoma as well) so I wouldn’t be able to just give it a way for like a week or more, unfortunately.

No, not that long, and it could be done in sessions if need be. You'd actually be present for all testing too preferably.

If you send us an email at yotawerxtuning@gmail.com, we can coordinate something.

Do you need the vehicle at a shop? Or could you do it in a parking lot? I think the only way this could work (from my end) is if you could work on it while I was at work. I work in Kearny Mesa so pretty centrally located in SD. I probably would not be able to bring it somewhere and drop it off and stick around. My schedule is work full time, come home and watch a baby, repeat.

I am not at all sure why I never received a notification for this comment/inquiry.

That said, our network is pretty flexible, and tuning can be conducted in places such as parking lots.

Good morning from the YotaWerx Tuning Team!

On 30 March 2024, we got on the dyno with our 2008MY 4th gen 4Runner 4.7L to document numbers for the already highly popular YotaWerx 4.7L VVTI “Blackhawk” calibration, and to make any improvements on the spot if necessary.

Stock Calibration vs YotaWerx Tuning “Blackhawk”; 93-octane

    Published_4Runner V8 - Stock_vs_YWBH.png

With a consistent and notably strong horsepower and torque gain achieved throughout the powerband paired with a range of overhauled parameters including fueling and timing optimizations, throttle control, and transmission adjustments, “Blackhawk” for the 4.7L delivers a dramatic change in drivability and performance.

If one evaluates the lower rpm range between the stock calibration and “Blackhawk”, with a notable difference in power and torque already apparent from the beginning of the respective pulls, the observed delta portrays a significant difference in usable power available to the driver.

Greetings from the YotaWerx Tuning Team! This evening's post brings information regarding calibration support for customers with long tube headers + y-pipe hardware.

As previously announced, on 30 March 2024 we strapped down the YotaWerx 2008MY 2WD 4th gen 4Runner 4.7L to the dyno to document numbers for the already highly popular YotaWerx 4.7L VVTI “Blackhawk” calibration, and to make any improvements on the spot if necessary.

This was part of a larger project in partnership with Doug Thorley Headers and Burtman Industries, with the goal of developing a calibration for the Doug Thorley long tube headers & y-pipe hardware combination, a very common upgrade path for 4.7L owners.

Following the dyno session for the 4.7L Blackhawk calibration with the OEM exhaust manifolds, installation of the Doug Thorley long tube headers and y-pipe began. Upon completion of installation and confirmation of proper fit and function, the YotaWerx 4.7L 4Runner returned to the dyno on 09 April 2024. The following graphs review the results from 30 March 2024 and demonstrate the results of the 09 April 2024 session.

Stock Calibration w/ OEM Manifolds vs YotaWerx Tuning “Blackhawk” w/ OEM Manifolds

    Published_4Runner V8 - Stock_vs_YWBH.png

Stock Calibration w/ OEM Manifolds vs Stock Calibration w/ DT LTH + Y-Pipe

    Published_4Runner V8 - Stock_vs_Stock+DTH.png

    Stock Calibration w/ DT LTH + Y-Pipe vs YotaWerx Tuning “Blackhawk-LTH” w/ DT LTH + Y-Pipe

    Published_4Runner V8 - Stock+DTH_vs_YWBH+DTH.png

Stock Calibration w/ OEM Manifolds vs YotaWerx Tuning “Blackhawk-LTH” w/ DT LTH + Y-Pipe

    Published_4Runner V8 - Stock_vs_YWBH+DTH.png

Installing just the Doug Thorley long tube headers and y-pipe combo netted us an observed +10whp and +15wtq peak gain on the OEM calibration, while following up with tuning conducted on the dyno resulted in an achieved peak gain of +23whp and +32wtq when moving from the stock calibration + headers to tuned + headers.

With no other modifications made to the vehicle between dyno sessions and conditions being nearly identical, a strong demonstration is made to show the benefits of installing the Doug Thorley long tube headers and y-pipe combination while also paired with a YotaWerx Tuning “Blackhawk-LTH” calibration, displaying a whopping gain of +33whp and +47wtq at peak.

As always, peak horsepower and torque are not the only metrics that matter, and trucks/SUVs benefit most from gains found lower in the rpm range. The demonstrated delta between the calibrations shown portrays a significant difference in usable power available to the driver. Just like the YotaWerx “Blackhawk” 4.7L calibration for the OEM manifolds, “Blackhawk-LTH” delivers a dramatic change in drivability and performance by making the most of the investment in Doug Thorley hardware.

I wanted to post the feedback from an owner who just completed the Blackhawk tune and trial period with his GX470. His truck also runs the 4.7 V8 the powertrain and Doug Thorley setup. Here's his review from my Google page:
