“Limp Mode” help

Was driving 2018 4Runner ORP down the freeway and check engine light, multi terrain error and a few others came on and lost power. Couldn’t go over 25 MPH. Towed to dealership and this is what they said needs to be done. I have/had a pedal commander and removed it when this happened. Any experience with this????

 

Do you have any input into what the dealer says happened to the air injection control pump (water intrusion)?

 

They said water got in a caused corrosion. The advisor wasn’t sure how it got in. I’m not very educated in these things.

 

So you may actually have an air injection issue.
But, when I installed Pedal Commander, by the book, it tripped my ecu. I was told this will happen twice, then never again, turned out to be true. Did a hard reset disconnecting the battery and all that. Then, as predicted by members here from experience, it happened again month or two later while driving and the dash lit up like that and went into limp mode. I did the same ecu reset, reinstalled PC by the book, smooth sailing ever since. Good luck

 

You're braver than I. I would have boxed up the PC and sent it back after the first issue. Luckily, I never had this happen with the Sprint Booster I had.

 

Hahah and dude, even braver than you think, it was my wife driving at the time while I was at work! But my Runner is paid off and don't give a shit bout warrantees so there's that

 

Did you remove the PC before or after the diagnosis?
Did you tell the dealer it was installed?
Where is your 4R currently?
What weather conditions have you been driving in lately that may have led to that diagnosis?
After removing the PC did you consider disconnecting the battery to reset the system?

 

This was a common problem with the V8 Tundras, but haven't heard of it being an issue for the 4Runners or Tacomas.

 

This happens to the 2012 tacomas. secondary air pump failure can cause limp mode. Toyota will only pay for it if its a 2012 tacoma!!!

 

I had this happen about 2 months ago and I do have a pedal commander on my runner. Took it to the dealer they said a valve was busted and that the air pump was out also. That the air pump caused the valve to stop working. They replaced everything free of charge and didn’t say anything about pedal commander.

 

Water in the secondary air pump used to be a issue but not since Toyota changed the software on all equipped models. The secondary air pump is supposed to run momentarily after you shut the engine off specifically to clear any water in it. You should easily be able to hear it I can. Can you or did you hear it run after shutoff? My take is I can't really see a pedal commander causing this. Maybe you need a software update for the PCM. Don't know exactly when Toyota made the software change but I would definitely inquire before I shelled that kind of bucks for a pump with the dealer telling you it's your fault/problem.
