so i recently found that the carpet under the front passenger side weathermat was pretty wet, and since i wanted to do some sound deadening anyway decided to tear out all the interior bits to hopefully find the leak, clean, and add sound deadener.

in the passenger footwell i found this:

which appears to be a firewall pass through that is awfully wide open. does anyone know 1) if theres supposed to be a rubber grommet there and 2) what the part number would be? its on a 1998 sr5

i do plan to pull the headliner too and check the sunroof drains (unfortunately the sunroof is no longer functional) scrubbing and sound dampening most/all the way

    thanks all

i didn't take many pictures but here's one before i put the top dynamat on. i really hope the difference is noticeable because damn it is a lot of work (first time for me, i'm sure with practice it'd go easier and faster.

It definitely looks like there should be a grommet there, but I can't confirm.

    Nice job on the Dynamat!

Let us know how much quieter it is please. Been contemplating doing that to mine.

I can't remember if there was one or not. If there was one there's a great chance Toyota doesn't sell just that. Normally grommets come with whatever they go around, so a firewall gromet will be sold with the wiring harness.

If you suspect that it's the issue then use some silicone to seal it up. I bet it's the sun roof drains.

that was my thought as well, going to smear some silicone on there and see how it goes

and i'll unfortunately bet its the drains too, headliner is coming down tomorrow to check

will do, i'm hoping its significant as its a lotta work - tomorrow will do the back and then start on the doors. i haven't decided what to do about insulating the roof, we'll see how much i've got left from the rest i suppose

ok so i've finished the floor and rear panels with dynamat and dynaliner and while it definitely is quieter, i'm not sure the juice is worth the squeeze

Edit: check a couple posts down for my thoughts now that i've had a good amount more time in the car (2 days later lol)

it was a ton of work and time, i do notice that the higher pitch sounds of the machine and road seem to be gone which is nice, i'm sure that on a long road trip that that alone would make a nice difference. i'll get to the doors and roof down the line, i've got the materials still so i'm not going to not do it. it was nice to clean out the 25 years of dust and i steam cleaned all mats, carpets, and seats. its a refreshing refresher for sure

tl:dr - it makes a nice difference in noise in the cabin, but the amount of time and effort to do it was not insubstantial. would i do it again? probably not. is it nice now that it is done (mostly)? yes

also i found a foam 'ring' for lack of a better term that seemed to fit so i sliced it to wrap around the tube and then smeared some silicone on there to more or less seal it up. i'm more concerned with dusts and such than water here in SoCal

I came to the same conclusion when I did similar sound proofing. I only put the "Dynamat" from the front seats forward. It made so little difference that I don't think I'd notice if it were gone.

Maybe it does make a difference, but I couldn't hear it over the sound of the engine because pre-99 base 4runners don't get sound insulation between the engine and the interior. So unless you go all the way and remove the dashboard too, it isn't worth the time to add it imo. And that insulation is very heavy, so the weight is increased by a not insignificant amount.

after spending the day in the 4runner yesterday - first 2 hrs on the highway and then a good long time on trail, i've changed my opinion, its definitely well quieter, particularly on the highway, and a worthwhile mod. i'll be doing my doors and pillars and then probably the roof too, maybe just dynaliner on the ceiling, tbd.

its not super cheap, its definitely labor intensive, and is it a huge difference? nah, but as its my daily driver having it be a bit more comfortable especially for road trips makes it worthwhile (for me). as far as weight, yeah its not light but it is nicely distributed and once i take my steel ARB bumper off that will more than offset it (by a long shot). the dynamat weighs 15 pounds each 'pack' and i'm about 1.66 packs in with the floor all coated and then the dynaliner is 1.3 pounds per pack (4ish in so far) so looking at around probably max 50lbs total once its all said and done, give or take

again, lots of squeezing for some amount of juice, its nice but certainly not something i'd say anyone has 'got' to do unless they're so inclined
