a tune or a pedal commander

not got the beast yet but wondering if a tune is better than a PC or equivalent?

new at this and just want better acceleration without dealership problems or tune problems down the road,

can you just de-tune it back to factory settings if I don’t like it?

new so just the basics please

 

Looks like you are looking for a 2023 4runner (with factory warranty)? I would go with a throttle position device like a Pedal commander/ Sprint booster /... If anything goes wrong you get a check engine light you can unplug and play dumb with a dealer visit.

If you do a tune and get a check engine light I doubt you can play dumb at the dealership.

Just my opinion in term of warranty as none going to work for me especially with the dog I cannot accelerate like crazy or drive hard. When I'm alone if I need little fun I just put my foot to the floor. If those reputed throttle controllers are cheap new like 50 bucks I might try. LOL..

Nothing against them though as I like keeping my Rav4 in sports mode (the sport button) as it was pretty good driving feel. I think that system is more than a throttle controller like minimum giving 10% power to rear wheel. Anyways its out of 4runner topic.

 

I ditched my PC for a tune

 

Well, a PC doesn't add any performance. It just makes the pedal more sensitive. But, with few exceptions, everyone who has them, loves them.

So, if you want more power, get a tune. If you want better pedal feel, get a PC.

 

I bought my 4runner in January, Trd orpremium. I bought a pedal commander and it makes mine feel a little more peppy. I find it a better driving experience, it just has a little more pep. I use maybe 1mpg more gas. I didn't mind it without the pedal commander but the pedal commander improves my driving experience.

I'm intrigued by tuning but am hesitant on a primary vehicle on the off chance something goes wrong even if it is a very slight chance.

 

Drive it first before you buy anything. You might find it's not that bad.

I think some people just have weak ankles or something. I have 0 problems with mine, but I'm not afraid of breaking the pedal. I have never been hesitant about punching it with any of my vehicles.

 

A tune is a more comprehensive option. A throttle controller only scales throttle. If your only gripe is the lack of pedal response, a throttle controller may be right for you. If you also want to address shift scheduling, add a little power, and scale the throttle, a tune is what you’re after.

No, I haven't. But, the fact is a pedal commander does not make it faster. A tune can, but that's not what I was referring to.

What I can say is that I have driven mine in all kinds of conditions, and done some towing, and I find it perfectly adequate for most things. No, it is not fast. But, it's fine.

 

no one said it makes it faster. It makes it 10x better to drive.

 

I guess, if you find the pedal response unacceptable, then that's true. But, I find it to be just fine. I just give it more gas.

 

Tune, the pedal commander is a waste imo. Yes the tune CAN void warranty. But why do you need a warranty on a 4runner?

But the tune does SOOOO much more then a pc.
I had the pc then I got tuned.

You can't lump the pedal commander in with getting a tune. A tune actually increases power, so of course that's going to make a real difference.

I understand that people like the pedal commander. I even recommend them if people don't like the feel of the gas pedal. But, I have no issues driving without it. I stomp it to the floor when I need to move, and I've never had a problem.

And I 100% stand behind saying that you cannot lump in a tune and a pedal commander. They are completely different things.

And, yes, I am stubborn. But that doesn't change any of the above.

I have a PC and love it. Installed for the last 2years or so with no issues. Very different driving experience than how it is in stock form. I love the responsiveness and lack of lag with the PC. Personally I don't think I would ever go back to stock form. I thought of getting a tune, but the only thing that is stopping me is the fact that I wouldn't be able to revert back to factory settings if I wanted or needed to (meaning I wouldn't be able to do it myself). I like the fact that I can unplug the PC anytime I want and revert back to stock at anytime, not needing a tuner to do it. Just my .02.

 

Go for broke, re-gear to 4.88! Might as well toss in a front locker while you’re at it!

i had the sprint booster on my Taco, suited my needs perfectly. I drove the T4R and got a tune, due to the shifting discrepancy especially when using cruise at highway speeds. I see the need in the market for both, everyone has different tastes and wants.

 

Can’t speak for other tunes, but Overland Tailor tunes retain the OEM octane learning capabilities, so you can run anything above 87 octane and the tune will adjust accordingly. Your T4R will make more power in 91+ octane, both stock and tuned.

 

Yes you can simply remove the tune if you don't like it.

But! If I was you...I'd drive my new or new to me 4runner around for like a week or so, then get the tune. So you can feel the improvements of the tune. I can guarantee you will notice the difference, and won't look back.
