it is interesting, i just got the avs 2 today and it looks exactly like your weather Tec including the mount screws. I just installed it a few minutes ago in less than 5 minutes. Probably the best $55 I have ever spent!

I'm assuming you are creating holes to attach this? Are the screws self tapping? Are they stainless?

    bone stock for now
There are several square holes already in the hood and they send you plastic inserts that you put in those holes and then you use the screws to attach the shield. I like the look of my shield but it didn't help the bugs from hitting my windshield at all on my summer vacation that was close to 2 thousand miles this year.

After having a weather tech on my vehicle for over 5000 miles of highway use, I am not sure it does anything. 2019, stock suspension.. I have allot of rock chips under it and on the hood..Driving mostly from SC to, to GA, VA to Florida and back, decent speeds.
I think a wrap or ceramic coating might be better.

I also have weather tech. Not sure if it will work and probably more for looks. I did get front end PPF (Xpel) and did ceramic coating for rest of the vehicle. It was suggested from a few friends that have Toyotas with some rock chips on their hoods lol. I probably wouldn't be mad if I got it off roading because it's expected, but getting it from just highway driving is another story...

Has anyone tried installing the Toyota bug deflector without the metal clips? It comes with the screws and white plastic pieces just like AVS and weathertech. I think you would just need to add washers.

Would be the same for any 5th Gen model from 2010-current. ORP badge doesn't matter.

I went with OEM - ordered and installed on delivery. So covered with warranty.
They put a thick transparent tape on the hood edges to prevent that metal fastener from scratching.

They advised against going to automated car washes.

I have family in north-central PA and I live in central VA. My wife and I just traveled up there and back recently within a 3 day period, and couldn't believe how bad the heavily-invasive lantern flies were on our trip (they were introduced in 2014 and have spread exponentially since). They're huge, and the splattered/pregnant bodies on the windshield almost got to a point of being unsafe. Since these things are probably here in the mid-Atlantic to stay (and expand to where I live), and there are likely a lot of trips ahead where these things will cause problems. I was hoping to find the highest profile bug deflector for the 4R out there...does anyone have any recommendations?

Have you ever considered Xpel PPF? I am not familiar with the bugs you mention but MIchigan bugs wipe right off Xpel. I put Sonamax wax on it also and gosh it’s slicker than you know what. So far I am very impressed. I know it’s a lot more money but just wanted to share my experience

I bought the AVS Bugflector II High Profile shield and it doesn't deflect any bugs. It looks good but I was extremely disappointed. I set off on a 1800 mile family vacation this summer and we ended up leaving very late in the evening and when crossing the Snake River several times that night the bugs were out so heavy I ran out of fluid and had to stop more than once to just clean the windshield at the gas stations along the way to Pocatello from Boise. If anyone can recommend a shield that works I would buy it ASAP.

The only bug deflector I ever had that really worked was an old school one on my 88 Toyota pickup. Stuck straight up looked hideous and I think even hurt gas mileage but I never ever had a bug hit my windshield

What I found was in the winter snow and ice collect behind it and it sends frozen ice balls on to the windshield at highway speeds. I ended up taking it off in the winter and then finally said ......nope. not putting it back on

Some of the best product out there for PPF. My entire front is done with Xpel and offers the best coverage with professional applied ceramic pro.

When you close the hood does the WT deflector contact the body painted grill piece right under it? Scratch that paint?

I vote avs. I had Toyota oem. It can scratch the hood and rides a little higher. I noticed more rocks to the windshield with it vs avs. No cracks with avs and no rock chips.

I put on an AVS right after I got the truck. A few minor chips, but bugs? Hell, we have a spring migration of moths that will defy any attempt to keep off the windshield. When I drive up to the Gila in the springtime I usually have to stop halfway there clean my windshield. Good luck with whatever you choose.

    No. That said, I have a 2021 Tacoma. I can’t imagine any difference on a 4Runner

I bought this for my 2017 4runner and then again for my 2022 4runner. ZERO issues. NEVER BROKEN! Never rubbed the paint. NEVER an issue with drive thru car washes. I can only vouch for the EXACT model in the link above, part # 25053

IF YOU DONT LIKE ROCKS PITTING YOUR HOOD TO DEATH YOU SHOULD PROBABLY GET ONE OF THESE! You will get less bugs but some will still make the windshield.

The biggest thing for me is it makes the front end of the vehicle not look as small

I highly suggest that if going on a road trip to use some McGuire's quick-wax on the deflector and also the entire front of the 4runner. this way bugs come off easier.

Are there opinions about the AVS Bugflector vs Bugflector II?

I installed the AVS Bugflector and so far no issues. Simple installation, no rubbing and looks great.
