Old Or New?

I'm looking to join the cult and have two options.

1. Order and buy a new vehicle with exactly the options and color I want. I can get it at MSRP, the delivery time is a bit variable depending on exactly what options I choose.
2. Purchase a friend 2019 TRD ORP with around 80,000 miles. The miles are mostly highway and it's been well maintained. The tentative purchase price is 34,000. It's not in a color I would have picked. The frame is perfect, as it's seen virtually no snow.

You cannot custom order a new Toyota like you can Ford, GM, Jeep, etc...

Toyota builds what they want, they sell them all anyway. A good dealer can request one that matches mostly what you are wanting.

Buy new with warranty.

 

Buy new if you can. You won’t regret it.

If you can afford to buy new, and don't mind the wait, I would definitely go that route.

Honestly, I don't think 34k for that one is a great deal.

Buy new and get exactly what you want. Close to zero miles, four years newer, factory warranty, and all of the new technology.

 

Like said above, regardless of Toyota's "build" function on the website, all you're doing is giving your dealer(s) your ideal and letting them tell you when something close comes in. We just went through the same process and the $10-12k savings wasnt worth 70-80k miles of wear to us.

Thanks for the greetings. I bet I've spent 12+ hours over various nights reading posts on this board. I go down all kinds of rabbit holes. It's fun to see what everyone is doing or interested in for their ride. My original post was sort of a sanity check, I actually expected more people to suggest the used ride and that was not the case. One thought with the used, that I didn't post, was if the Gen6 comes out and is well done, I could drive the used truck for a few years till Toyota irons out the bugs and then get a Gen6 without losing too much money. I figure the depreciation on the new one will be more severe, but with these that might not be the case.

 

I vote for buy new as well. Especially 2023 new features wish I have like heated steering, blind spot, rear cross traffic alert, etc..

Not sure about highway only miles as I have a friend in my 4runner group who drives the 4runner like a sports car. Always on sequential mode with high revs. My 4R is daily driven in city for very few miles for school runs hence service under severe conditions schedule eg - 6 month oil change, etc. So I think used car condition depends on user how much love is given.

So my vote for new 4runner.

 

Welcome Goggles. It sounds like you may be looking at this from a traditional vehicle market perspective. That market ceased to exist a couple of years ago. There is a shortage of both used and new vehicles on the market. Way more used vehicles change hands every year than new. Due to shortages, their values are through the roof and unless you are at the limit of your budget, you aren't saving enough to justify mileage and the unknowns of used in the 3 to 5 year old range.

 

I was in the market for a used/certified 2018+ 4R OR (I regrettedly sold my 2016 4R Trail with 69K miles 4 months ago). But 4Rs keep their value and the ones that I found at average or lower pricing were either in rough condition or have been in an accident. I even went to look at a vehicle that had a perfect carfax report, but when I looked underneath there was oil everywhere and a lot of rust. My guess is that the vehicle was damaged while offroading. I started up the engine and couldn't stand the smell coming from both the front and rear of the vehicle, even while I was standing from about 4 feet away. I didn't bother to go for a testdrive.

If you found a nice used vehicle, just make sure to get it at a price that is considered a "great deal" for that vehicle and for your area, and make sure you have a checklist of possible issues to aid you with inspecting the vehicle.

I myself decided to buy new, and hope to be in a financial position to trade-in for a 6th gen in 4-5 years.
