    I traded in my 2016 Trail and got a 2023 Tundra. We need another vehicle and I miss our tank so I bought a 2023 4R ORP which should be delivered in the next 3 weeks or so.

    My wife test drove several vehicles (2023 Pilot & CRV Hybrid, 2023 Rav4, certified 2020 X3 M40i) and in the end still wanted another 4R. I want it too for its build quality, reliability, overall capability and great resale value.


    I was looking forward to the 6th gen 4R because I love the V6 turbo on my non-hybrid Tundra but I need another vehicle now. Anyway, buying the 2023 5th gen 4R allows me to wait it out until the 3rd year of the 6th gen 4R to decide if I want it. Hopefully, the major TSBs would have been addressed by then.

    The 6th Gen will have:

    Better looks (to most people)
    Better off-road specs (angles)
    Better MPG (especially per the EPA)
    More power (especially torque)
    A more rigid platform (more confident handling, especially on the highway)
    A drivetrain that doesn't last as long, will need more repairs, and will be more expensive to repair

    That's the fact jack.

    Not 100%.

    A couple of details still up in the air.

    3.5L NA motor might offer an automatic transmission as well. Perhaps they offer this across most trims, except the Pro.

    Pro trim might have a hybrid option too. Could be the Hybrid Max from what I'm hearing.......or maybe it's only the hybrid max with no 2.4LT. I'm not quite sure.

    These all knowing predictions about how problematic it's going to be are getting old.

    Edit: I don't mean to single you out. Heck, it could even be true. But, I could just sit here and say the turbo 4 will be the most reliable engine ever. Probably won't be, but nobody knows yet.

    it would make sense they keep the V6. Nissan is still offering their V6 in the Frontiers. It would be a good amount of buyers lost if they do indeed kill off the V6 option...

    I’ll say this the words Hybrid and Pro do not belong in the same sentence to me at least. They may as well use the words Dainty and Pro.

    It just does not sound cool, tough, or rugged which to me the 4Runner had represented in its current form.

    Ehh.. if it's the fake Atkinson 3.5, I don't think anyone is going to want it anyway.

    I'd be much more interested in a hybrid PRO than a full EV, personally. Whether or not it sounds cool, there's some real potential performance benefits.

    I wouldn't mind more power and range. :notsure:

    Yeah, but given the choice between a turbo 4, hybrid, or the 2GR-FKS, I'll skip the V6. And, so will most people.

    Also, did you know that the incoming turbo 4 will make way more usable power than the current V6?

    Edit:. On the flip side, I will give Nissan credit for making their own sports cars. I'll take a Z over the new "Supra" any day.

    I hear you. The naysaying gets irritating. But there's so much of it because people are putting 2 and 2 together. And they're bummed. Look at the Tundra.

    Of course the 6th Gen will be better in many ways. I've listed the ways. When it arrives it may well be the best option in its segment. It's just gonna lose one of the main things that makes the 5th Gen special. It simply can't be the trusty, relatively simple dinosaur that so many of us like. There's just no way around it. Toyota has no choice because of the demands of both CAFE and the marketplace. It's just reality.

    Look at the Tundra.

    I wasn't aware that the new Tundra had been officially declared a failure. I thought we would give them a year or two to work out the bugs. :notsure:

    Also, the 4runner is getting an entirely different engine.

    And, I'm pretty sure there have been some reliable turbo motors.

    Just because the Tundra is having some issues doesn't guarantee anything about the next 4Runner.

    Yes, it's quite possible that you're right. But, it's also possible that you're wrong.

    yes the turbo 4 would have better power output.. however the sound, power output and reliability of the 3.5 and 4.0 just went hand in hand for the Tacoma in my opinion.

    Nobody's really raving about the power of either of those V6's. And, the 2GR-FKS hasn't exactly been bulletproof.

    If they kept the 1GR, and mated it to a 6 or 8 speed transmission and maybe 4.10 gears, it would be nice. But, I doubt that's happening.

    I would think Toyota could get away with the CAFE standards for the 4R with as many efficient vehicles in their lineup now allows them to sell the current 4R to us.

    I am just getting old and becoming my Dad and don’t like change I guess especially when it’s forced change. Sadly nothing to me in the automotive world is exciting anymore. Even a new EV Charger (no more Hemis), soon demise of Camaro and maybe V8 mustang ? Now we have electric noise makers to simulate the past ? What’s next sync our cell phones to a fake exhaust note? Sorry for bad attitude maybe I should just move to Florida and get a golf cart.

    midsized truck at the end of the day. too many folks stay wanting half ton pick up truck power inside a midsized truck but its just not going to happen in this universe..

    yeah, and we've had this convo before. It definitely ain't happening, but for sure my first choice would be to keep the 1GR, mate it to a solid 6 or 8 Spd trans (like the ubiquitous and proven ZF 8) and bolt it on the new TNGA-F platform with some updated styling. Now THAT I would buy in a heartbeat.

    The 2023 Tundra got a brand new motor. 1st year.

    If the 6th gen 4Runner in fact gets the 2.4L turbo from the Lexus NX (which is most likely), it will have had 3 years of use with the NX, 2 years in the Crown, 2 years in the Highlander, 2 years in the Lexus RX and 1 year in the Grand Highlander first.

    I realize you're talking about the entire vehicle and not just the motor, but at least we'll know something about the 2.4T reliability beforehand.

    I'm not a fan of the demise of real sports cars, either. Regardless of how ridiculously fast EV's are, they'll never replace the charm of a well tuned ICE.

    It's not about wanting full size power. It's about wanting to be able to drive into a headwind without constant downshifting.

    And, it literally is going to happen with the turbo 4. Unless they detune the shit out of it, it's going to have more torque than my '03 V8 4Runner did, which was just awesome for towing.

    I think the 4R is too important of a vehicle for toyota to screw up. People just love it. I heard somewhere that 2021 was the best year as far as sales numbers goes. This is after having the same 5th gen for a decade? Wow.

    If the new 4R engine design goes a similar direction to what they did with the tundra where the v6 turbo is quicker and makes more torque at a lower rpm than the v8, I’ll want it..love the engine+transmission, handling and creature comforts on my 2023 tundra limited but dislike the build quality https://www.tundras.com/threads/official-army-green-thread.112020/page-4#post-2997239.

    I am buying a 2023 4R ORP in the next 3 weeks..We need another vehicle and we miss our 2016 4R trail. But if Toyota continues to build the 6th gen 4R in their Tahara plant, I would consider trading up the 5th gen 4R in 2027/2028.. I think by then the major issues with the 6th gen 4R would have been figured out already. I’m really hoping for a hybrid turbo ORP with 300+ hp and ~400 ft/lb of torque under 3k rpm. It would also be nice to be able to roll comfortably on 285s on stock suspension and gearing.

    Imo there’s just nothing comparable on today’s market to the T4R in reliability and utility. A fully capable and reliable off-road vehicle that’s also just fine in the city and on the highway. It’s not large or small. Just right there in the middle. There’s nothing “cheap” about it and yet it’s not luxury (which demands $$$$).

    It’s such a perfectly balanced vehicle in every way. If they can keep it mostly the same but bump up fuel efficiency without too much compromise, they’ll have a winner.

    I left the world of tacomas (after 20+ years) after buying a 3rd gen Tacoma. Didn’t like interstate highway manners (underpowered at speed imo and that’s what got me into a T4R). If they fail in that same regard with the T4R, I’ll be really disappointed.

    It’s a tall order. I hope they come through! Because I LOVE my T4R. (I still love tacomas, too, but for the amount of interstate highway driving I do, the 3rd gen just didn’t cut it- if I ever have enough money to own two vehicles, I’d love to have a Tacoma in my garage next to the T4R).

    Well said. This is why some of us get concerned about the 6th Gen. The 5th doesn’t need much improvement. It could use a better frame. More rigid and corrosion resistant — and lighter. Toyota’s new platform should do that. It could use a more modern trans. That would also aid performance and mpg. It could use a styling refresh.

    I totally get others want more power. Don’t blame you. But the above is all I’d want. But it’s not what I’m gonna get.
