Helloooo. I don't know the protocal for the 4Runner and brake wear sensors but it kind of sounds like that. There is a squealing that happens a good amount of the time (not always) and it is when the brake pedal is not pressed. When fully pressed the squeal does not exist. I can be driving on a smooth road and have the squeal or it could be a rough road with no squeal. I could be on a smooth road and the squeal just suddenly appears out of nowhere. I can't force it to happen as in turning, accelerating.. nothing makes it happen. But what does make it go away is braking. And if I brake gradually the squealing also fades with it slowly until its gone. It does sound similar to a German cars little metal brake wear indicator but that would be odd to happen when the vehicles brakes aren't applied, I think.

I took a crappy video and the squeal can be heard. Not sure how to upload that but I am working on it. Any thoughts on what the issue is is greatly appreciated. I am still under warranty with about 20k miles but I prefer to do things myself if possible. I have not had any good in dealer experiences with Toyota. Thanks!

Crap! The iPhone video is too large!! AHHH!

Edit: I hope this works! This is basically coasting in Drive at low speeds. When you hear the squeal fade at times its because a little bit of brakes are being applied.

Deer whistle??…. Jk Did you check caliper and rotors on each corner? Maybe one is seizing up. Maybe your e-brake not fully releasing?? What year and mileage?

I had a 2021 that did that same thing a few days after I brought it home. I also took video with my phone and after speaking with the service manager and emailing him the video he called and had me bring it in to the dealership. They replaced the rotors and the problem was no more. All under warranty. Hope you’re his helps.

I looked without pulling the wheels for anything obvious, but don't see any discoloration or smell anything odd. It doesn't feel like the e-brake is on at all. It will still roll easily and I pressed and unengaged it a few times.

    edit: 2020, ~ 20k miles

Thanks! That does help. I hope its just the rotors. I would prefer that than dealing with the dealer. They damage something every time I bring it in. I am still under warranty but past that goodwill rotor swap period. Thanks for the insight.
