2018 Revisions

That seems like a pretty average response from a dealer. I have a TRD pro Tundra and while I was trying to find it I ran into salesman like this all over the place. I feel really bad for the people that fall for this stuff and end up paying over MSRP for something because they don't know any better. There was a dealer selling a Cement Tundra earlier this year for a $10k markup because it had what they called "custom Wet Cement paint."

 

Wow looks even worse in real life in my opinion. This must be at the port before all the "Pro" add ons?

 

Do the tires look like Nitto TG G2s to anyone?

Ran into same thing when I was hunting down a Cement 4Runner TRD Pro. Alot of dealers trying to get over sticker. Took me a few weeks and had to travel 5 hours out of state, but found a dealer that gave me $500 under MSRP and stepped up on my trade which was a 15 4Runner Trd Pro. I'm pretty sure the dealer selling for $10k over MSRP wouldn't give you $10K over trade in value when it's time to trade it in.

 

I think the Calvary Blue will be a nice color addition to the Trd Pro line. It wouldn't be my first color choice, but I'm partial to the Cement because that's what I own. One things for sure like it or not, they'll be selling like hot cakes at the Toyota dealers.

 

Sales people will always try to get the maximum price for anything they sell - That's doing their job! It's good to see 4R's are in this league ...Would hate to be driving a vehicle that they have to low-ball to sell. That would come back and bite existing owners. In the end, this is a good thing.

 

I hear you, it is a good thing for 4Runner owners. Just not a good thing for the guy that paid $10K over sticker.

 

That's a Nitto Terra Grappler not a Terra Grappler G2

The G2 have two differents sidewall design, One side look a lot like the original grappler

 

I just bought a set of G2's for my wifes Jeep GC. Excellent tires, prefer them over the original Terra Grapplers that came on my Pro. Better ride and seem to be quiter.

 

Know that we know they're no revisions on the 2018, has anyone heard some good rummors on the 2019's

 

At some point I see Toyota moving to the 3.5L they are using on other products, including the Tacoma. This would be one step at improving mileage - Certainly the next change would be new transmission with more ratios. Just about every maker has done this for the same reason. The other change I see would be adding the Toyota Safety items they've deployed on a number of other vehicles. I can't imagine them going to unibody in that they have the market for a true off-road capable SUV to themselves now.

 

agreed, I can also see perhaps independent rear suspension and some major weight reduction overall. I think with the right tune and transmission behind it the 3.5 can eventually be fine in the 4runner but she needs to go on a serious diet before that. Maybe aluminum panels I don't know

 

Agreed, there is no way the current 3.5L Tacoma drive train would work with the enormous added weight of the 4Runner.

 

The HP and Torque numbers of the 3.5 are similar - It's just that the 3.5 (like a lot of new engines from a lot of manufacturers) has a 'hockey-stick power curve. Toyota has played with Turbo's in the past - But not in current products. Ford seems to be the leader in that department. A turbo on the 3.5 would be interesting. - Clay

 

Hoping for 6 gen in 2019. Need to trade in the wife's Jeep GC. Love to have two 4Runners in the garage.

 

I own and already have both in my possession a 2017 TRD Pro and 2018 TRD Pro and I paid $500 more for the 18 and the color is different That's the only thing. Nothing on the inside is different, under the hood or exterior expect paint I took off the TRD Pro badge on the rear if anyone cares to comment that the 17 has one, this did too. Both gone!

 

Nice color on the 18. Do you have any side and front pics. I was going to go with a blue 2018 had I not been able to get a 2017.

 

The more Calvary Blue pics I see the more I'm loving this color. If I didn't just buy a 17 Pro, I'd be heading down to the local Toyota dealer putting a deposit on one. Still extremely happy with my Cement, but think the blue is equally nice.

Have you driven one? They're not even close, not remotely. PEAK HP might be, but usable, nope. The 3.5 only makes its power up top, close to or at redline. The 4.0 has usable power everywhere. How do I know? I had a 4.0 Tacoma. I had a 3.5 Tacoma. Now I have a 4.0 4Runner and it is such a better powertrain than the 3.5 by miles. Plus the 3.5 can't ever decide what gear to be in and is constantly shifting, especially going up hills.

Hmmm, I think I'll take this 40mph hill in 4th gear. Nope, don't have the power for it, lets go down to 3rd. I got this, back to 4th. Wuuuut, why can't I make it in 4th? Down to 3rd again. Lets give it another try, I bet I can do it in 4th. Or maybe not, back to 3rd. Why am I in 3rd right now, we can do it in 4th... and repeat. The 4Runner up the same hill I drive every day, no problem. And driving on a flat road up at altitude headed to go snowboarding - 9000 feet, the old 4.0 Taco would cruise in 5th the whole way. Same road, similar conditions, the 3.5 would cruise in 5th, not 6th, unless there was even a hint of a headwind, then it would cruise in 4th and not have the power to drive in 5th.

The problem with the 3.5 is they made it like a sports car, good power up top, jack shit down low. There is a tune out for it that supposedly makes it much better, but in stock form it is terrible.

 

Yes, I have driven them, and yes, you are correct...The 3.5 is not what you would expect in a truck, but would be a lot of fun in a sports car. I have a 2016 Tacoma and am every thankful that I bought the Manual Transmission. This enables - ME- to manage the power train and, for what I do, the 3.5 is quite usable. I have a couple of friends that have the 3.5 with an AT and they do grumble. The 4.0 in the 4R has only one problem - You are disconnected from the managing the power train by the AT. Too bad it's not offered in a manual (Quoting my wife) this will be the first vehicle we have owned with an AT. Yes, we are old - Clay

 

Just got back from Jay Wolf Toyota in the St. Louis, Mo area. It's seems there is a 2018 option for a "Wilderness Package" to include Roof Rack Cross Bars, All-Weather Floor Liners and Cargo Tray. $255 Invoice and $434 MSRP.

 

I traded my 2017 3.5l with a manual tranny for my 4Runner. The jump between 1st and 2nd and again 3rd and 4th made the truck horrible to drive. I tried to like it but during my trip to TX from NM I figured out that if I was going to load my motorcycle in the back, along with a weeks worth of goodies for the trip I'd have to swap the gears, get a tune and probably intake and exhaust. Now I'm in it deeper and still get crappy mileage. I averaged 16mpg there and back and never went more than 5mph over the legal limit. Even at the slightest incline the 6th gear put me at 15mpg at 75mph. I tried cruise control, then turned it off. I spent 15 hours on the road trying everything I could think of and it just didn't like the extra weight. Mine was 4wd, 4 door with all the options so it was the heaviest one you can buy except for maybe the pro or limited with leather. I test drove a auto before I bought mine and if they can get the tranny tune to work it's probably a better rig. Anyhow; that's my story and I'm happy I was able to ditch it and keep my 2013 tacoma as well.

 

Just ordered an '18 4Runner TRD Pro in Calvary Blue for my wife, dealership said it will be in on Sept 20th. We will see.
