    Hello all,

We just bought our first 4Runner after having a Honda pilot for 14 years. Must admit was disappointed that the remote start requires a monthly fee. Anyone have good luck with an aftermarket version? Thanks. Otherwise we are happy so far with our purchase.

    What trims do you have?
On certain trims you can use the key fob to remote start without the need of a subscription. Subscription is to use the app to remote start.

If your trim has it, make sure the 4R is locked and press 3 times the lock button of the key fob (hold the button on the 3rd press)

I have a 2022 limited and got best buy to install the viper ds4+ - they have sales and include installation every so often. Costs under $300 installed.

You can click your OEM lock three times as described above 2x then hold on the third press and your OEM fob will remote start without a subscription.

The reason I got a viper (which is a rebrand) is because I wanted longer range than the OEM fob and I like being able to unlock with my phone using Bluetooth without a subscription.

It appears they changed it in 2022 so we'll have to see if the 3 clicks will work. Sad my ancient (2008) gmc sierra has it as standard on key fob. a little too much technology in these vehicles now, in my humble opinion. :)

I’m pretty sure it should work on the limited. I have a 22 pro and it works fine so my guess is that you’ll be fine as well.

Like said above the range is not great though so make sure you’re not too far

I went with the Compustar T13 since it has over a mile range and has subscription options with integrated alarm. The T13 actually has up to 3mi range so the subscriptions are not necessary, but it has a lot of custom options that are far better then OEM remote start. Fob is pretty sweet too. https://www.compustar.com/remotes/pro-t13-w-lte/

I am also a fan of the DEI (Viper & Python) remote starts and alarms, but not quite as advanced as Compustar.

    welcome.

as mentioned above, the subscription is only for the remote start in the app. the physical fob remote start will still work. Whether it's factory or aftermarket.

I just tried the 3 clicks/hold and it worked. Hopefully will continue after all the free trials, as I won't be spending another 80.00 a year after what this vehicle just cost! :) thanks all. I'll keep you posted.

I guess they really want the extra 80.00 a year! LOL I don't see any mention of using the fob to start anywhere in the owner's manual and our salesguy didn't inform us of it either, just had us put the toyota app on our phone. Thanks everyone for the tips!

Didn’t you try it with the fob and it worked? Others mentioned you don’t lose that by skipping the paid service…

We just bought a 2023 4 Runner Limited and the app has to be on your phone for the remote to work with the 3 click method. We removed the app on the phone and the remote would not start the vehicle. Even went to the dealer to confirm this. Need app on phone they said. After one year you have to pay a subscription for the service. Go figure.
So, My question. Have any of you been able to start the engine without the app on your phone?

    Thank you

Yes it still works without the subscription. It’s been said more than once in this very thread

Well see you said you were "pretty sure it should work" So I'm here to find out how to make it work without the app, and it does not work. We even went to the dealer and they said it will not work without the app. hmmmm

You may want to try it again. We tried it at the dealership before we even bought the 4R limited. I put one in the 09 Jeep Jk I used Fortin they are plug-in play no hacking up the OEM wiring harness I like going that route because we have a lifetime Mopar lifetime warranty.

Thanks guys. We tried it at the dealership and it worked also. . The sales guy that was helping us had it working also. I somehow thing they have the app installed on there phones which allowed the remote to work to start the vehicle. Once vehicle is sold we became the new registered owner to that VIN number, as the dealer sends Toyota our owner information. Maybe the dealers have other software to connect to each vehicle. I don't know. They aren't about to tell you either. I don't personally like the app on my wife's phone as Toyota receives every bit of information about the vehicle. So that is where we were trying to start vehicle remotely and remove the app of her phone. Also, after I believe 3 years they want a fee for this service called Toyota connect. Another money racket.
I looked at the Fortin plug and play which looks to be another option. Thank you FlyYX. We looked at and after market remote start and my wife doesn't want to carry around two remotes for the vehicle. My 2022 GMC Denali has one remote for everything and no fees for remote start service. Other wise like most folks, we really like the vehicle. Wife said she'll live with the app and the way the remote works for the present future until they start wanting fees. I guess will cross that path when the time comes.
I read somewhere that BMW was charging fees to have the seat warmers activated. I think they dropped the frees as there was to much chatter about it. Go figure. So you buy a $100K vehicle and the want money so you can turn the heated seats on.. It's laughable when you think about it.
See I think Toyota can turn this remote start system on and off with the app on your phone. From what my understanding is, your phone and App gives them access to the vehicle. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe the App is just so you wave all your privacy rights and they can now reach the vehicle through GPS. It does have the anti-thief stickers everywhere on the vehicle, (Which we didn't ask for) so the can remotely find and disarm the engine. Shut it down. I love the technology but one has to wonder how much personal information is being gathered.

    BMW.. https://www.theverge.com/2023/9/7/23863258/bmw-cancel-heated-seat-subscription-microtransaction

Yes i said I'm pretty sure because Pro and Limited are very similar in term of added features like remote start or auto headlights (none of the other trims have these options without going aftermarket). So I can only speak for my truck as I dont have a limited. However, OP confirmed that remote start via keyfob worked on their truck.
And if remote start keyfob works, then the app is not needed. Not only mine has expired but I don't have the app anymore and I can still remote start using the keyfob.

PS: 90% of dealership employees are clueless on the vehicles they sell so I wouldnt take their word for it, mainly when it involves you giving them more money
Look up the threads on adding TPMS for the spare tire for certain trims, or the beep volume glitch that disables your keyfob and see the response people got from dealerships having no previous knowledge on these

Yes, I agree with your take on dealership personal. You do meet the odd one who has a thinking cap though. Thanks for the reply
