SPC uca squeaking. Help!

Hi I am new here, my husband and I have a 2016 4runner with 60k miles. Within the last week there has been this HORRIBLE squeaking sound coming from the passenger side control arm area. We can't pin point where the sound is coming from. My husband took it off yesterday and greased it with no luck it still squeaks. We have adjustable SPC ucas and Icon 2.5 coilovers. I will try attach video and pictures. Also I looked at the stock lower control arm ball joints. Are they supposed to do this? Mahalo in advance.

Good photos. I have the same UCA's which date did you buy, you know they have had major failing issues right? Luckily I seem to be one of the lucky ones, after two years to date. Others replace SPC ball joints every year.

Tie rods with play, and steering components with wear can squeak, if you're ears aren't 110% sure it's at the uca

 

Thanks. We bought ours 5-3-21 we installed them at 49,743 miles so a little over 10k. That's what I have heard. SPC wants me to email them a few videos of it to see if they need to start the warranty process. Other companies have even stopped selling them and said SPC has been giving people a really hard time with the warranty. I hope this isn't true. My ears aren't 110% sure LOL
I am wondering if maybe its the Lower control are ball joints.

Ya for sure, hey nice I watched this guys videos recently too when replacing tie rods. So I was gunna say next, I've been told by shops that Toyota's notorious achillis heel is prematurely failing lower control arms(bushings, balljoints). Most vehicles should last 50-80k miles

If you think back hard, have you ever experienced any of these lower control arms failure signs
-squeaking, knocking, clunking, banging, popping, or snapping noises, when going over bumps or while-steering, accelerating, or decelerating
-steering issues including wandering, pulling to one side, or an inability to track straight when cruising, braking, or on uneven surfaces
-uneven and/or accelerated tire wear
-vibrations felt through the steering wheel while driving

I've had all those slightly, except never squeaking and steering wheel vibration. It was my tie rods, and uca ball joints blew the boot seal once and they are beginning to have minor play. My lca's checked out

 

Interesting, yea we have 60k and I have a feeling that is what it is. SPC said toyota lca also rust really quick.
I have noticed steering wheel vibration and now major squeaking. We are gonna replace the lca ball joints on both sides probably Wednesday and see if everything is good after that.

Yes I will update for sure. Yea we live on an Big Island of Hawai'i so we don't have far too drive lol. And my husband has an 01 TRD Tacoma with about 144k

 

Looks like them lower ball joint boots are toast and are letting debris into the ball joint. No amount of grease is gonna fix that. Ball joint replacement is gonna have to happen.

It's been a while since I've had Icons, but that looks like quite a bit of preload on the coil overs, which may be why you're eating ball joints on a '16.

 

Thank you, we are changing them Wednesday. I have been told by a couple people that the stock ball joints are known to go pretty soon but I wasn't sure. Good to know about the coils we went with the recommendation from Icon.

 

Sweet I bet that'll help the noise once them ball joints are replaced. As far as the preload, if thats what Icon recommends then rock on. Probably just a trick of the camera, or me only having a 2" lift thinking it looks huge haha

Changed it! And yes that was definitely the problem! But it was horrible to take off. My husband took the lower control arm to his mechanic friend they had to heat it and the ball actually shot out of the part. His friend said first and last time ever doing that. He said never again. Even with the right tools it wouldn't come out. They heated the crap out of it and pounded it with a sledge hammer.
Ha well we have the next side to do. So for $154 on Amazon we bought a whole lower control arm for the other side.

 

I had issues with mine squeaking too, but it was bad bushings. Got them replaced under warranty.

 

@Mtbpsych oh wow. Hopefully ours are ok. Seems it went away. If you see the pictures before the bushings where cracked and the one we changed had play. Where as the new one didn't.

 

thats crazy your lca failed at only 60k. I replaced my stock lca at 150k and only because i wanted to freshen up the whole front end (UCA, inner/outer tie rods, sway bar bushings). Each year they passed inspection without issue.

 

That sounds so sketchy lol I don't doubt it was dangerous if you're heating shit up and using sledges. I have a ball joint separator tool and such I thought you're supposed to use

 

agreed, use the right tools or just buy new Lca.

 

He is a mechanic with the right tools. The tool didn't work.

 

The ball joint failed. As soon as we changed the ball joint everything was fine after that. Not one sound and the steering wheel didn't shake anymore. It did shake a little before. I don't know why it failed so soon but it did.

I wish it was that easy that's why we just bought the whole lca for the other side. We didn't even want to try

understood, but 60k is not a lot of miles to have a double ball joint failure. Like I said, my originals went 150k before they were replaced and the ball joints were still good
