I know there are so many headlight options in the aftermarket but they've all had their fair share of detractors with poor beam patterns, flickering, etc. Are there any new developments out there that are a simple plug and play, no splicing and dicing, that are an improvement over the pre 2021 LEDs? No xenons please.

I got Morimoto 2Stroke 3.0's in wifes '22 Civic (came with halogens) And Xenon Depot Xtreme LED's in my '16 Runner. Havent made up my mind if I like one better than the other.
    My comparison:
    Both 5500K color.
Both have very good and defined cut offs when everything is adjusted properly.
The Mori's seem just as bright, but I feel the XD's project further and clearer. This might be headlight design or just that the Runner sits much higher. ( I also have Morimoto XB Fogs on the Runner which produces a TON of low level light).
    The XD's were $70 cheaper.
Both were plug and play, but I did have to drill a hole in the dust cover on the Runner to run the module wires thru. The XDs come with a silicone rubber grommet to reseal it. The Mori's didnt but the Civic isnt a sealed unit like the Runner.
Pic is of the Runner with fogs off...

I just installed H9s, brighter. Will see how bulb life goes and whether that pushes me to upgrading to LED lights at some point.

I think that’s wise. A lot of us will be interested in your updates.

Mine have lasted 2.5 years and 21k miles. Just plain old base model Phillips. Better throw (and more pleasing light) than some OEM LED systems I’ve seen. Including my wife’s 2021 Passport Elite. And that’s the top trim, with fanciest headlights.

I’m looking forward to getting closer to the steering-responsive LEDs I had from the factory on my Subie Ascent.

I’m dumping the OEM housing for Alpharex and also ordered the OEM LED fogs.

X2, I have the H9 mod and it work perfect. I would only go 2021 OEM LED headlight, aftermarket just isn't where it should be yet.

    The same 4Runner everyone has
Only improvements I recommend are H9 bulbs in halogen assemblies, or upgrade to the 2021+ OEM LED headlight assemblies.

Morimoto V2 headlight assemblies also seem to be strong contenders, though I have some reservations about their long-term reliability.

Everything else is a downgrade in terms of actual lighting performance.

I had the same reservations about aftermarket headlights. Even with the Morimoto V2s showing up as a viable choice, the cost vs. reliability wasn't a question I was willing to test for myself.

Thanks everyone. I did the H9 mod but its not enough. I am looking to do a full headlight housing swap if there is something reliable and plug and play. Is the newer OEM LED housing that someone made a plug and play adapter for yet or is it still rewiring? I don't want to rewire.

    Check this thread:

    https://www.4runners.com/threads/oe...on-adapters-for-14-20-halogen-4runners.25899/

Plug n Play harnesses are available. The challenge is finding a good set of used OEM LED headlights unless you're willing to pay retail.
