How many of you do the filter every other time ?
I never do but was thinking a good 20k filter should go 10k no problem, just because it is more difficult on this then my screw on filters.
Will be running Mobil 1 0w 20 extended performance changing it at 5-6k.this seams to be when the light comes on.

Literally every time I do my oil change, I think about not changing the filter. But then I remember that a filter is only like 9 bucks, and to me it's not worth the extra few minutes to risk hurting the motor, though there's probably a very very slim chance of that.

In my case though, I do mostly highway driving, so I go closer to the 10k interval than 5k.

I believe the light is set to come on at 5k miles, and that may be more to remind you to rotate your tires then having anything to do with the oil. If you do want to change oil every 5k, it is a handy reminder.

That's a long, long time to not replace your filter. I change my oil every 3-4k miles and have considered not changing the filter every oil change but I have been.

Synthetic oil doesn’t begin to oxidize and degrade until at least 10k - 15k miles but an oil filter can clog up pretty much any time. You’re better off doing 2-3 filter changes on the same synthetic oil vs trying to skip changing a filter.

    This is an Amsoil filter?
Even Amsoil recommends changing the filter at every oil change.

I presume you’re trying to avoid the mess of dealing with a filter change. But remember that the oil filter and its housing will hold about 0.5 quarts of “dirty” oil after you drain the pan.

I change my oil and filter when I replace the engine. I usually get about 50-75k miles out of all 3

I’d go by factory spec and oil spec.

The harder you are on the engine with heavy acceleration, off roading, etc the more often to change it before the manuals stated.

Our first service (5000miles) from Toyota was only a tire rotation. I think the first oil change from Toyota was at the 10,000 mile service. Taking our 4Runner in on Friday for our 20,000 mile service.

    Ok
Oil change done, not too bad.
The filter cap was very tight.
I usd a socket instead of a 3/8 drive on the wrench. I cheaper out and got a 13 wrench instead of a 30 one. Worked good was tight with any bitt of dirt.
I will do filter every change easy. I didn't even use the drain thing, I just unscrewed it all then cleaned up the cap.
I did break the plastic push thing in the center holding the plastic guard on in front of the skid plate

Ask yourself, is it cheaper to replace a filter every oil change, or a replacement engine when you suddenly have an issue and Toyota refuses to warranty it? I do not know about the US, but OE filters are $7 at my local Toyota dealership. This is not the place the save money my friend.

Buy them by the case on Amazon and the oil filters are only $4.20 a piece. Very cheap insurance.

I notice our local Walmart also has these filters on the shelf.

    I Don't trust Amazon suppliers.
I would rather run super Tech filter than someone I buy an Amazon. I'm not even sure super Tech makes one for the 4 runner

I keep it simple, every 10k with whatever full synthetic is the cheapest and a fresh filter. 221k trouble free miles on my Tacoma doing this. I do the same in my 4r Pro
