Does anyone have any suggestions on a true plug and play aftermarket remote start that will work on a 2023 4runner ORP? I purchased a N2 designs remote start that said it was plug and play only to find out that I need to splice into wires in the OBD harness and that is not something I care to do. I am looking for a remote start that will be a truly plug and play without snipping or splicing wires.

Just installed mine on the 2022 Limited Push button. 30 min install. True plug and play.

If anyone is interested in this N2designs who is located in Colorado let me know
I just watched the video on this and the video shows there is a 7 pin connection on the steering column which mine does not have. To confirm, The 2022 does not have this either? The website says its for a 2022-2023 but the video they have linked is to a 2020-2021 4runner that has the 7 pin connecter. Also, did you have to take the glove box out?

12 volt. If you have a pushbutton start, it will turn off when you open the door. No way around it with a plug n play system.

This one comes recommended and is on my wish list. I believe you have to do some panel removal and stuff though. There are some YouTube videos out there. You might consider watching some of those and seeing if it’s outside your comfort level. Or like me, your expertise level. I’m seriously considering having a professional install it.

12 volt solutions has been working for me, 2 years now. I installed it in less than an hour w/ the app module and programming. 100% plug and play. At first the install looks intimidating, but it’s actually easy. Just take your time.

I just installed this one...about 20-25 mins and yes the glove box comes out but pretty simple...seems to work well with a bit of a lag between the 3rd press and the engine start...just a few seconds but worried me at first and I kept repeating the sequence...I be happy now and so is my wife...no more crawling out of the back of the runner into the freezing cold to get in position to start...and warm up

I ended up going with the one from accessorides.com and got it on a black Friday deal. It came today and it was fairly easy to install and was completed in about an hour. It was a true plug and play and it works well so far, thanks for the suggestions! It's going to come in handy on the cold Colorado winter days.

I have the N2 system and it was plug and play if you have the SOS button on the roof next to the drive modes.

Are there any that DON'T shut the 4R off when you open the door?

I was reading up on the N2 kit listed on R4T and in the description they have this blurb: "All Toyota/Lexus vehicles Push to Start ignition type will shut down if any door, hood, or hatch is opened"

I understand the frustration. We have an Acura MDX in our family with remote start that stays on when you open a door and only shuts off after a) 15 minute run time, or b) if you attempt to engage the transmission without the key fob being detected. Wish that Toyota had implemented a similar system.

There has been a change in the last few years where there is no longer a 7 pin plug in under the steering wheel so you need to tap into the wires in the ODB harness. Unfortunately the N2 kit is being designed to where it works with many different models now so it not just plug and play for all models anymore. There is a different way of plugging it in depending on if you have a locking steering wheel or not and if you have an SOS button or not. They needed to just make a different kit for the newer models rather than just trying to patch work the existing kit to work with newer models.

Oh makes sense. Yea I agree with a different model for each unique vehicle.
So you have good luck with the one you purchased. Glad to hear.

There must be at least one system that doesn’t shut off when you open the door, mine has one. I’m not sure which one it is, someone else installed it before I bought the car and I haven’t taken the panels off to check yet. But mine only shuts off if you put your foot on the brake pedal before putting the key in the ignition and turning it.

I think the problem is with the Push Button start cars. The 2020+ models shut off because of the Push Button. Otherwise it should work exactly as you describe... like every other car on the market. Thanks Toyota!

So you can confirm that the Accessorides kit is true plug and play on cars that don't have the steering lock harness and connector under the steering column?

I'm running into the same problem as you. Frustrating as I only found out once I got most of the way through the install as the instructions I received were older and didn't mention the steering connector issue.

Yes, for the 2023 with no locking steering wheel it was true plug and play. I did have to take the glovebox out and plug in behind it but it was just a couple of plug ins and it was done. Works great. I am still stuck with an N2 designs remote start that nobody wants to buy. Super frustrating that it was poorly advertised as plug and play.

That's great. I just emailed them to make sure.

Agreed. I'm frustrated with N2 and every retailer advertising the product. Just a simple note that says, "Pull off the lower steering trim and look for the steering lock connector" would solve this. However, that would prevent N2 from advertising it as 99.9% plug and play.

Best Buy (yeah, I hate the store too) has a viper ds4+ available for $300 installed and it allows you to use your cell phone (blue tooth) to unlock in addition to the aftermarket fob.

After researching a ton of options I think it's the easiest for the money.

To use remote start from your phone via cell requires a subscription, but to remote start from your phone using Bluetooth or the aftermarket fob, or pressing the OEM fob 3x does not require a subscription.

I just got off the phone with Justin @ N2 Designs. Seems I was confused. I was watching the install video from N2 (which is a 2021 4Runner) and was looking for the steering lock harness, which was dropped in 2022. N2 Designs did update their kit at some point recently. It now ships with an ODB jump harness, so no trimming is required. I was assuming that all 4Runner's required the OBD harness. Turns out that it was their fix for the steering lock harness being removed by Toyota.

    Slightly less plug and play.

I would not dare tap, splice or so much as touch anything electrical. Imagine if you introduce a gremlin into the electronics that nobody can then fix, and you dare not ask the dealer to fix it. There is another way which may be too good to be true. There is video on YouTube claiming that the combination of Carista app and Veepak OBD scanner, you can unveil features that remote start is just one of them. I have both but do not dare to even try that. If anyone is brave enough to give it a try, I'd be interested to know the outcome.

You wanna try it? I don't know what the app really does. What if I get a CEL that nobody can figure out. I have barely 200 miles on the truck.

Yes, I've used carista. I used it to turn off the no seatbelt beep. I'm cheap, so I only did the 7 day trial. That's plenty of time to tweak what you like. It's made for dummies. It allows you to see what settings you want to change before you make any changes.

    Oh, 200 miles.

    That feeling of new love.

    It doesn't go away. That's why there's a forum.

So, watch a YouTube video on how to change the color of the navigation car to match whatever color you have.

Use carista to change settings. Then change everything back to default, because she was perfect from the factory. Then change again because your free trial of carista is almost up and you kinda liked whatever tweak to whatever setting is important to you.

As far as remote start- it's worth it to some (including me). It's not the best money I've spent on my 4runner. The side mirrors were the best upgrade for me, but even wasted money isn't wasted if I enjoy it.

Congratulations on your new 4runner. When you break it, search the forum first. Relax, you just bought the best vehicle on the market. They're designed and built. (Don't fry the ECU - that's expensive - but hard to accidentally do without splicing and wiring)

An OBD2 dongle - even a cheap Chinese one, won't ruin it.

@Well69 thanks for reassuring words. Specifically, did you set remote start with Carista? If it is that easy, why do people have nightmares about tapping and splicing?

Where can you "unveil" the remote start feature? I have the Carista and did not see that feature. I went with the Accessorides remote start with the cell phone module when I first bought my truck. Its 100% plug n play. There are no wires to tap into or splice. It uses all T-Harnesses. I'm almost on 3rd year of ownership and have zero issues with the remote start.
