DASH GEAR SELECTION INDICATOR

    I noticed the other day, while using the gear selector manually, that the gear selector would show the 4 display in the center part of the information panel, then when i moved it into D , the indicator would show D. ( normal). But this last time, i moved the shift lever forward, ( not D) , the indicator showed 5. I then moved the lever to D, and the D illuminated. I do not seem to be able to locate anything for this in the owner's manual. does 5 mean the torque converter may be unlocked for towing. My previous vehicle had a TOW/HAUL feature, which unlocked the torque converter for towing.

    I love to see the gear position in D if possible. I wonder if some tool like scanguage can show it. Anyone has an idea?

    I'll do it next time I drive it, but pretty sure my 2013 does this. When you're in 4, and shift up, you're just manually shifting it into fifth gear.

    I thought if you select 5 this tells the car "you can shift up to 5" vs if you select 2 it will shift only up to 2nd. I'd love to see a method to see "what gear am I in?" :):)

    I think this is true, as @Thatbassguy has reminded us periodically. But it also wouldn’t surprise me if moving the shift lever into “S” mode also changes the shift points.

    spacer lift front 1inch
    I did my scan gauge tool MPG, eng transmission temps , lookup that scan gauge tool a lot of the data of the vehicles .

    My understanding is that you are just giving it permission to shift in the fifth gear. If you are full throttle at low speed and bump it to S5, it will not shift into overdrive instantly. It will shift into overdrive when it decides to.

    Unfortunately it is snowing here right now so I can't go outside and test this. Maybe tomorrow morning...

    I think you are correct. I'm going to try to confirm that tomorrow.

    I do think that being in S mode affects the way it shifts. In overdrive, it seems to always head right to the highest gear available. But, in S mode, it seems like it holds gears for just a little bit longer. This could just be in my head though.

    Actually, you want the torque converter to lock for towing. In "S" mode, you control the top gear the transmission will shift into. It will also engine brake more in "S" mode.
