My daughter has one of these for her Subaru Forester. It was expensive! But very high quality. It’s durable and fits the space well It comes with a 12v electric air pump that will fill it in a couple of minutes. There are different versions depending on whether you have 3rd row seats, sliding tray, or neither.

Luno life mattress is perfect for the 4Runner. Especially if you have the pull out gray because it’s a flat surface with the seats down.

I had to have a fridge so the Exped worked best for $50 at REI because of points. Also I can’t stand air mattresses with those valleys.

There are several options out there from folding mattresses like this to camping mats. Things to keep in mind. The back floor is ~2in lower than the folded seats unless you have the pull-out tray. You will have to build a platform to even it out. There are a lot of threads out there about them. I use a sheet of plywood on 2x4s and this sleeping pad. Keep in mind that air mattresses will be as cold as the air around you in the winter. That's why I prefer the foam-filled ones.

Also, I have "bug" screens on the side windows and a mosquito net on the back so I can crack them and a little fan in summer. Now the biggest thing, unless you are under 5'10 you will be a little cramped even with the bottom of the seats taken out. I end up sleeping slightly at an angle so my feet fit.

I've had good luck with the super-thick REI inflatable camping pads. They store out of the way when not in use.

I don't get what is the difference between the mattress for the 4runners that have the tray and the ones that do not, since the mattress doesn't compensate for the even surface?

"My 4runners without the cargo sliding tray does not have an even sleeping surface. Does the 4Runner Mattress account for this?

    • In 4Runners without the sliding tray, when the rear seats are folded flat, there is an angled portion at the bottom of the back of the seats that creates an uneven sleeping surface. The mattress does not account for this uneven surface, but will still fit comfortably. If you're worried about the slope, you can create a level surface in the cargo area by adding in blankets or creating a platform.
**Some 4Runners may not have a slider tray but still even back surface area**"

I have a “full” size air mattress that I put in there, works great. I would like to find something more low profile though. I have a third row. If OP has something to level the back, a $35 air mattress from Walmart will work great, tight fit but works great. I did it for years in my 4th gen as well.

I’m a bit too tall to comfortably fit in the back so it’s hotel’s for me.

Watch out for the "erection angle" in the graphic above. Always adjust for that.

The wife and I have a 3" memory foam mattress topper of whatever size fits. I sure prefer it to sleeping on the ground! But, at 190ish pounds, I do always have one spot (hip if sleeping on my side) that sinks all the way through to the floor. My wife's quite a bit lighter and does not have that issue. A 4" may have been better for me.

New to the forum, and I'm glad I found this post. I recently bought a 4Runner and was wondering the same thing. I did some research and found Sleep Underground, a company that specializes in sleeping mattresses. They have a great selection of mattresses for the back of a 4Runner. You can choose from their standard mattresses, or go for something a bit more custom like their memory foam mattresses. They have something for every budget and style. Plus, their customer service is top-notch! They have free shipping and a 30-day trial, so you can give it a go and see if it works for you.

Sandbuster, what was your overall impression on that mattress?
I know you sold the Runner, but did you have a chance to try it out?

I recently splurged and bought a Hest foam roll up mattress. The narrow one that does not include the air pad. Fits perfect on the 60 percent side. I like the idea of simplifying things, so no air, no filling, no leaks, is a big benefit.

It rolls up big, so not the most portable thing in the world. For my first camping trip with it, I set up the bed before leaving, and packed around it. I actually put it in my sleeping bag, along with a cheap air pad under it. Very comfy! Im planning to always use the self-inflating airpad with it, and if that springs a leak, no big deal!

Bed.jpg Better Habitat mattress (73" x 25" x 3") - $159.95. I had this mattress on a sheet of plywood and a 1/2" exercise pad. I slept inside for 17 days on a 20 day trip. I am 60, 5'11" 178 and prefer to sleep on my sides. I did not feel any discomfort on my hips at all. I highly recommend this mattress. Roll it up or fold it over when not in use. The cover can be removed to wash it.

My wife bought me the expensive, cut to shape Luno air mattress. I didn't want it and returned it. I prefer a firm mattress that is not going to need air, deflate or pop. I a firm believer in the KISS Theory - Keep It Simple Stupid!

I never got a chance to use the replacement mattress they sent me as the first one failed on one side but my thoughts are if the dang thing holds air okay that the mattress would be just fine. So I still have the new one they sent which should work okay in the Expedition as there is a "tiny bit" more space....

Thank you! Was looking at a kit that came with all the hardware, assembly instructions, CNC precut lumber the whole 9 yards.....$1200!! I thought I have tools, time, and a little bit of know how. One weekend and $250 bucks later.... Done! Feel like I should paint it or something to protect the wood from possible delamination over time and damp environments, but I don't know. Lol

I’m such a cheap a**. I went to a local mattress manufacturer and asked if they had scrap foam. They asked what dimensions I needed, so I gave them the rough 4Runner dimensions. They came out with a 4Runner sized piece of 5” foam mattress material and charged me $25. It works amazing.
