    Oil change related question

Do you use this plastic thing when changing oil filter?
If yes, how do you pull it out?
I've changed the filter twice already and both times ended up crashing this thing with pliers and pulling out broken parts...

Who cares? This never shows everything anyway.
I never pull out until I'm completely finished. There's usually a big mess leaking out after I'm done.

I've used it more lately. It's a pain in the ass to get it in, and then it always wants to slip out. Like, seriously, though, I've had the thing pop out numerous times.

I used to just take the whole filter housing down full of oil and accept that I my hand was going to get covered in oil. Sometimes I think it was less disappointing than using the plastic doohickey and still making a mess.

Nope. The plug is tight enough that the housing will unscrew first. I use rubber gloves and have some rags handy.

I pull it out before I unscrew the filter housing. Also, some are threaded which makes it way easier. I think K&N brand filters but don't quote me.

I used it the first time I did an oil change, then decided it was more of a PITA then just unscrewing the filter housing and letting the oil run down the side.

Same. My plug for that has been stuck for the last 5 oil changes, so whole housing comes off.

I haven't had an issue removing it. Twenty oil changes on the 2016 and seven on the 2020.

Doesn't seem like a bad tool but I'm a cheap bastard. I'd get one of the plastic threaded tools for free with one of the oil filters and then buy a length of half inch tubing to slip over the end. (I typically have tubing laying around anyway)

The trick is to pull it *sideways*, not straight down. Just give it a firm yank sideways and it comes right out.

I bit the bullet and went with the Baxter spin-on adapter. Pricey, but I like it.

Here's the threaded version I mentioned. Comes with oil filter K&N SO-7023.

Thanks a lot, guy. Another product I can't live without now that I know it exists. Ordered. My wallet hates you, but I appreciate your post.
