I’ve never owned a 4Runner, but I’m pretty familiar with the platform and their legendary status as reliable vehicles. Especially the 3rd gen.

However, I don’t quite understand the market. I found a recently rebuilt (not the engine) 99 4Runner SR5 Sport. It has 330,000 miles, but has a new timing belt, transfer case, drive shaft, exhaust and muffler. Has a dobinsons lift kit and brand new off-road tires. Frame is in solid condition and the exterior is in good shape. The interior however is kinda rough. Seller is asking 20k and won’t budge. Is this normal? Would anyone here be nervous buying a 3rd Gen with 330,000k miles?

    Curious to hear y’all’s thoughts.

Although car prices have come down some, they're still too expensive. 20K for a 99 4-Runner is way too high in my opinion. Check online and see what the going rate is.

Is the 99 a manual? V6? 4x4? That combo is super sought after.

But $20k? With those miles? No.

The used car market is crazy with anything priced under $25k. Sellers know that if you don't buy it, someone else with money to burn and FOMO will.

Keep looking. Saw a good looking 2WD 2007 T4R with 200K miles on Craigslist.
The guy relocated from a a warm region.
It was sold within a few days.

Thanks all, glad I reached out to the people who know their stuff.

I’ll have to pass unless this person drops the price significantly. I’m starting to realize that fair market even with the rebuild is like 8-13k

The manual transmission is the rarest piece.

Yeah, sounds like the guy has a $10k 4Runner.

I recently did a rear spring swap. And checked the top of the rear shock mount. There was a ton of sand which doesn’t dry. I pulled it all out and there was a little hole in the metal but still plenty of meat. Its a common problem.

Agreed, I bought a MT 4R in good shape with less miles for $6k about 6 months ago. Dude is way too high on his ask.

Granted mine is a work in progress.. and 2WD..
I just got one with 300K on the clock that runs and drives for $1700. After $120 in parts (spark plugs, coil pack and wires) fixed the check engine code for misfire cylinder 4.

I have dumped close to 3K into it now. 20K is insane unless it’s all original / low miles and immaculate

Well they are for people who can afford a new but “want” a 3rd Gen. Usually older from that time era. They can afford it!
