Why do people sell 4Runners?

We bought my wife’s 2017 4Runner 3 years ago for $31k with 38k miles on it. It now has 84k miles on it and the dealers around here are offering $29-32k for trade in. We have my 2021 4Runner that has more functionality (third row, burn me at the stake now) so we don’t really need hers. A Tundra would probably make more sense as a second vehicle so we are debating “selling” one of our 4Runners

I don't think that this makes up a sizeable percentage, some may have bought a 4R as a placeholder for something even harder to get. They get the 4R while they wait for their order or one becomes available.

What comes to mind are Defenders and Broncos, both were/are hard to get and some Bronco orders are over two years and still waiting.

I'm in the group that wants new vehicle every two or three years. When people ask me why that is I say "I don't drink, smoke, do drugs, gamble or cheat on my wife. Cars are my weakness." :)

Accurate. Bought mine as a sure thing vehicle with predictable and rock solid depreciation (in a wild market) while I waited for an ordered Defender. Then I spent some time in it.

The Defender came in, I collected my deposit back, cut bait, and bought predator side tubes for my 4Runner.

I almost sold mine because of this! Between the car payment and getting screwed in Child Support, I was on the edge of selling it.

I'm dating a woman who owns a 2018 TRD Pro and we're getting serious, so we won't need two 4Runners.

I'll sell mine and get a fun car.

My wife's 2010 SR5 2wd was bought from her work with 333k on it. All services done with Toyota dealer, no accidents, no rust, everything works, has a small oil leak probably from the timing chain cover but it doesn't leak more than a cup at most after 5k miles. We paid $4400 for it. I had to put about $2000 in it for new brakes, belt line window seals, right side exhaust manifold, tires, and a few other things. It's been great for the past year we've had it and best part is IT'S PAID FOR. I do need to do the suspension, trans fluid, and spark plugs some point in the next 6 months.

My 2013 SR5 4x4 was a single owner, no accident, Georgia owned, with 109k and paid $22k with free lifetime oil changes and a 12 month/12k mile b2b warranty with the dealership. I'd replaced all fluids except transmission (will be doing soon) and will be doing the spark plugs soon as well.

I actually went the opposite direction and bought older because I don't like all the new tech. Too many bad experiences lately with the tech messing up/malfunctioning and I'm not confident it will be good 10 years from now. Less stuff to break.

This makes sense. I don't understand why one would want two of the same vehicle.

I have the 4R, my GF has a comfortable economy car. Nine times out of ten, we take her car.

Same here. My GF has a 13 Camry and we take it unless we are going off-roading. She does want to get an SUV again(we have 4 kids combined). She is thinking Grand Highlander, Sequoia or Acadia(she had a 17 Acadia before the Camry).

I like the idea of two 4runners. because what I learn regarding maintanance/ repairs can be applied to both vehicles.

So if both drivers happen to need/want the same type of vehicle as a daily driver, having a “fleet” can make sense.

We have a 18 Highlander. I think the 4runner beats it at it’s own game, so I wouldn't mind another 4runner.

My wife on the other hand, likes the Highlander as her daily. So that’s that lol.

When I got (inherited from the wife, actually when I sold my FJ40) the 4Runner, we got her a RAV4. Great car for the city and annual snow. But she complains about not having heated seats. Told her we could trade the RAV in and take money from savings to get her a used 4Runner but she says "NO!".

Interesting. We have folks getting rid of their 4Runners because they’re getting divorced, and a guy getting rid of a 4Runner because he’s getting married (or “getting serious”).

@MountainMan Sorry to be the pessimist here, but if you think two 4Runners in the family is one too many, maybe she should get rid of hers.

Not fun on the streets. Slow, can't corner, can't go fast. Once the Runner is paid off, I'll keep the Runner and get a fun car.

It depends on what HE is using his Runner for. Sounds like he doesn't off-road, so having a fun car fits HIS life style more. If I didn't off-road I would definitely not have a 4Runner and would have something more fun.

    To me, it's an appliance.

Unless there's a foot of snow on the ground or I'm off-roading, there's nothing "fun" about driving it. Sometimes I even find it a little tedious.

I didn’t want two of the same vehicle, but here we are. She wanted hers because “it looked good.” I had the 3 row crossover for whenever family flew in. Engine took a dump one day and we needed a new vehicle relatively quick. Fords and Chevys were out. Stellantis products were out. European vehicles were out. Pretty much left to the 3 vehicles Toyota offered in 3 rows and the GX. Settled on another 4Runner because of price and availability. Picked it up the day after my vehicle shat the bed. Now that we aren’t in need of a vehicle, we can take the time to find a good deal on one that fits our needs better. Hardware store runs are fine in most cases, but when you’re getting 10 sheets of plywood and a bunch of lumber, the 4Runner is less than ideal

It's the opposite, actually. Mine is lifted and I have taken it on trails 99% of most folks on here wouldn't do.

Two days ago I was on the passenger running board, hanging onto the roof rack, and leaning outboard to keep my 4Runner from tipping over while my buddy drove through a particularly nasty section of the AZ Peace Trail.

But, her rig is a stock TRD PRO while mine is a modified SR5. It makes more sense to keep hers and make it more trail ready than mine.

Besides, I want a little WRX or similar AWD turbo car for a daily driver.

That makes sense. I also have an SR5 and this thing has taken me everywhere. But I do miss having a fun car. When I lived in AZ, I was terrorizing the streets with my 350z lol. Definitely looking at a fun car in the next two years. If I don't get my uncles 55 Bel Air, I will be looking for a fun sporty car.

The SR5 is actually a great build platform, as you're not paying extra for upgrades that you'll probably replace. If I wanted to do a hardcore build, I'd probably start with an SR5.

She mentioned getting an old jeep for the trails. I'll have to educate her.

The Premium SR5 comes with fake leather and heated seats, IIRC. But, does the PRO have real leather?

An old Jeep would certainly run circles around the 4Runner on technical trails. Well, a proper Jeep (2-door Wrangler).

Same. I've been toying with the idea of a Wrangler, but I would really miss the every day comfort. I think one of the best things about the 4runner is that it's a nice ride to the trails and back home afterwards.

I have had a 77 Bronco (I would love to have that one back - last year for the original Bronco), a 88 4R, a 76 Bronco and a 06 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon LJ (last year before they switched to a four-door). All of them were very good 4WD vehicles and I really enjoyed driving them as well. But I was in my brother's two-door 08 Jeep Wrangler this weekend for a couple of miles and I could not wait to get the hell out of that bumpy ass thing! Hard to beat the well blended refined ride and rugged capabilities of a 4R.

Sooo... I may or may not have taken a 2-door Wrangler for a test drive yesterday. Ok, I did, because I figured it might help to shut down the little part of my brain that wants one.

Anywho, it was almost exactly what I expected. But, ride quality was better than expected, and road noise wasn't bad. But, at 55-60 MPH, the wind noise was significant. I can only imagine what it's like at 80!

Still, I kinda want one.

It came in handy when my wife's tail light went bad, I pulled the tail light from mine and bought myself some Trail Edition tail lights. I've also saved a bunch of parts from mine after I did the Ironman 4x4 lift. I now have some replacement parts should the need arise. My wife and I are at the point in our lives were we want no car payments and we want something that will get us from A to B reliably and my 4runner will also do the offroading I like to do in my free time. Also, when it comes to doing maintenance myself, I can use the same knowledge on both vehicles.

I didn't know tan wall tires moved from the MTB community to the 4R community ;). I bought my '18 SR5P in 2020 as an off-lease from the original leasing dealer. It had 30K miles and was $28.5K. There are vehicles that tow more, have more interior room, get better MPG and have more tech (yuck!) but it's hard to find a more durable and high-build quality than the 5th Gen 4R. If the local suicidal white-tails don't succeed in killing mine, I plan to keep it for a long while.
