So, I kept reading about how slow 5th gen 4Runners are. Having primarily driven pickups for a long time, maybe my frame of reference is different. I think its about the same as my '05 Frontier (although that was fun because it was a manual). Definitely slower than my '11 F150 (5.0) and my '15 F150 (5.0). Heck, I think it weighs 400# less than my '15 while being down over 100hp. Pretty sure it's quicker than my Nissan D21 was but that was a 4cyl with like 4.62's.

But I don't think it's slow. Don't get me wrong, it's not fast either but I think, as per normal, people exaggerate how slow it is.

I did finally got WoT today while passing (finally over 1000 miles and no, I'm not changing the oil yet). Forgot how gross V6's sound compared to V8's.

Agree, I think it’s perfectly fine as far as power and acceration. Maybe part of the problem is for those who add a 1000 lbs of weight in “over landing” gear.

I have no issues with the power for driving around. Sometimes uphill on the highway it'll downshift but it's a pretty smooth engine/trans that it doesn't bother me at all.

If I wanted to go fast, I wouldn't be driving an SUV.

Could be. I'm debating aluminum for some things (bumper and sliders, I think they'll hold up and they won't rust...I don't intend to use the sliders as a pivot point) but not others (skid plates, aluminum seems to gouge and not slide while steel slides).

My F150 identified as a Mustang...

It's certainly not the Hemi of my Ram 1500, but it does what it's supposed to do with reasonable power in reserve. Towing and uphill seem to be a mixed bag as far as shifting is concerned, but it hasn't failed in that regard. Just consumed more fuel since it was in a lower gear.

As above, works good, lasts long time. And I, too, would buy a sports car/truck if I wanted to go fast.

My 150 with the 3.5 Ecoboost is definitely a joy to drive. If ever Toyota offers their twin-turbo 3.5 that's currently in the Tundra in the 4Runner it will definitely be trade time!

There are a lot of people on here who compare apples to oranges, to watermelons, to strawberries. They had a hemi Jeep with 600hp and then gripe about the 4R being a dog. It gets to 60 in 7.5 seconds, and will go a little bit faster than it should be driven. That's plenty for me.

If people are wanting a fast and nimble suv, you have the wrong tool with the 4Runner. It has been built to be used on and off-road, with reliability in mind. If you want a fast sports car truck, then go buy a Raptor and tow your 4 wheeling rig behind it.
I personally think that the 4Runner is very adequate in terms of power and highway passing. Is it going to fly around someone like my BPU MKIV Supra did, no but it will pass someone with ease, even at 80mph and going uphill.

I daily drive a 4 cylinder pickup truck. The 4R is a supercar by comparison. All depends on perspective.

It's pretty slow. I think almost 8 seconds to 60 but yeah I knew what I was buying. I didn't buy it for speed.

Its definitely not slow or a dog, its actually more than ample. Sure its not fast by todays standards, but compared to a 80's Camaro Z28 and many other V8's back then its just as fast if not faster.

Hell my 14 sporty Mazda 3 isn't faster than my 19 4Runner. 0-60 in 8 seconds is pretty darn good compared to many many vehicles, even today.

Even the 84 corvette barley did 0-60 in 7 seconds. So yeah the 4R would be winning some races in the 80's, and against "very fast" sports cars.

This thread is only informative for someone who would buy a vehicle without driving one first.

It''s alot faster than my first SUV. 1946 Chevrolet Suburban with a 90hp straight six engine about worn out. This was mated to a three speed floor shift transmission.

Wondering how many drive their truck in S4 around town or manually down shift to S4 for hills, towing or when passing on highway or know how to use OD gear or Sport selection. Really enjoy highway cruising at 75-85 mph with this truck with good alignment and tires and still gets decent 20 mpg.

If i am not just cruising on the freeway, i am pretty much in sequential for engine braking, or going up hills, and use S-4 in town from stop light to stop light. I have always done this, and have never had any problems.

On the one hand, it is what it is and I'm happy with it. On the other, my wife's '18 Durango weighs more and has a smaller V6 and outperforms my truck in every way. Sigh.

Slow... Sure, but I still fine it's adequately powered for what it is.

The throttle response was my biggest gripe with it, but installing a PC took care of that.

A peddle commander will fix fix most perceived issues with acceleration, etc. I had a Camaro SS too but sold it because it just sat in the garage (I like driving the 4RUNNER more)

I bitch about mine a lot, but it's true that it's not that bad.

My only complaint is how bad it is on hills if driven normally. When I finally get frustrated enough and just mat the pedal, she gets up and goes. It's just kind of irritating to have to do that. You kind of have to drive it like you stole it to get acceptable performance. I've never owned a vehicle that requires this amount of aggressiveness with the pedal, so I feel like I'm beating on it.

Around town it's perfectly fine, and off-road in low range I have no complaints.

It's just the lack of low end tq and tall gearing that hampers it on hilly highways.

On the plus side, it's reliable and just works when you need it too. It's also fairly efficient for what it is (if you can keep your foot out of it).

I thought it had plenty of power when i drove it off the lot. As soon as i put 58lb 275/70 tires and a roof rack on it, killed whatever acceleration i had previously. The more capable i make it the more i love it. Who needs HP? Haha

It's a burdensome brick for sure, but still plenty of power for me. I do cruise up to 85mph where allowed but not the type to speed up behind people and tailgate them til they out of the way, those guys are super annoying.
