Maybe call around rental car companies and see if any have 4runners to rent and rent one for a weekend. Or test drive as many as you can to get as much seat time as you can.

My tacoma was big enough, until we had a baby. Car seats are fucking huge.

I had an '87, with T tops. We got hit by a deer driving through a park, and the fender and door were trashed. I miss that car. I'm amazed at how long the transmission held up to my abuse considering I could lift it (the transmission) with one hand. :D

    Gross

There are about a hundred (OK, more like a dozen) other engines that should go in there before an LS.

I love how car manufacturers used to put "5 speed" decals on cars like it was a luxury! Then again, my '91 Hyundai Excel had a 4-speed

Anybody remember the old mitsubishi’s with the twin sticks? Basically one was hi/lo. Pretty slick

My first car was a 1984 mitsubishi precise hatchback that my folks imported from PR when we lived there. Same car was sold here as the dodge colt. We had one of each actually lol, same color, same year, same twin stick.

Basically it was just a 4 speed with a slightly high and slightly low range. Not sure if it actually helped with anything lol.

These things were pretty cool in the turbo versions…but we had the boring 4 door version in brown. Both of them

tried to find a pic online, but the internet didnt want to remember brown ones haha

Almost sounds like a mechanical overdrive. I had one in my 1951 Mercury.

It has far less passenger space than most trucks...because most trucks are full size trucks (and these days, they're crew cabs).

Way way way less room front and back seats than my F150 crew cab had. Heck, the back seat has less room than my gf's Subaru Forester.

I don't have a family of 4 anymore, that F150 was great for that (heck, we took my ex-wife's Tacoma on a trip to her parents (5 hours away) once and the kids said never again...I've had the 4Runner for a little over 2 weeks and I like the size so far (and fit a love seat in the back while moving my gf already)

'Too small' doesn't make sense to me. It's too small to be bigger? Too small to be a full-size crew cab? Too small for one's needs? (if that's the case, the size hasn't changed since you bought it). You've outgrown it? Ok, I get that one. But in general, just saying a vehicle is too small (or too big) is kind of like saying a 5-pound weight is too light, or too heavy. It is what it is.

Enjoy the current size because of David’s predictions are correct in 6th Gen forum many of us will be sad. He speculated that the 6th Gen will be similar to Bronco/Wrangler size. I sure hope not.

Mine is perfect plenty of storage and fits well in garage and still tows enough.

I didn't watch that video, but I got the idea that they are trying to bring in the Land Cruiser Prado to fill the void from the 4Runner, and make the 4Runner smaller to compete with the Wrangler. I kind of have mixed feelings about that. I do like the idea of a more nimble, off-road oriented Toyota. But, the 4Runner as it is right now is kind of the perfect size for a lot of us.

That's relevant for off-road as well as garages, driveways, smaller streets, parking lots, etc... When I park my 4Runner in some older parking lots, I genuinely can't imagine how your average Chevy Suburban driving mom can park in a lot of places.

I wouldn't buy one if it was bigger. The reason I've always stuck with the Taco/ 4Runner is precisely because they are not too big. The Tahoe/ Sequoia are completely unappealing to me due to their size.

I'm 6' and weigh too much. We take ours on 1 or 2 3k mile trips per year. A couple of long days. I'm old with old bones so after 6 hrs or so in the car, I do feel a mite stiff when I get out. Holds all our clothes, tools& First Aid kit and meds (& C-PAP), and my walker (don't need it anymore). Last year, held 3 of us with all our "extras" for a trip from eastern Washington to SoCal. It has "enuff" room.

Maybe they could make a two door and a four door version to appease both markets.

Remember two Explorer Sport as an example versus the four door. It was at least 12 inches shorter if I recall.

Both body on frame as well.

I had 05 Suburban, 13,16 Ram 1500. Got rid of the Ram after kids all had cars and went to a 19 Taco. I cant say I ever really adjusted to the cab. Last year driving by the Toy dealer where I bought the Taco they had a dark blue 4Runner on the lot. Went back the next day to take it for a test drive. It was x10 better than the Taco, the ride reminded me of the Suburban. Bought it, love it!

Too small for who? and what? I have known for several years the time was coming for me to get more practical than the Porsches I have driven for the last 30 years and that I would get a "mid-sized" SUV. I initially thought a Macan would be nice, but too small as well as expensive. I took my time looking at everything on the market. Lots of too small, and lots of too big stuff out there. And I generally don't like the style and looks of most of the newer SUVs. 4Runner won because (a) the size is perfect for me (I did consider whether it would hold a 4x8 sheet of plywood or drywall - it doesn't, but in the one or two times I need to carry that during my many years of ownership, I can put it on top), but there is still a relatively large cargo area; (b) phenomenal reliability profile; (c) I like the looks, inside and out. And so far I love this thing.

Check my memory on this: isn’t the 5th Gen the largest-ever 4Runner? It was never meant to be a behemoth.

They definitely got bigger over the years. I think the 4th gen was pretty similar sized, but the 3rd gen was definitely smaller.

The Gen1 was, of course, a 2-door. Gen2 came as both 2-door and 4-door, but I think the 4-door outsold the 2 like 10-1. It’s kind of expensive to make two versions, especially when one doesn’t sell well, which is probably why the only option is 4 doors today.

The difference in size from a 4th gen to a 5th gen is staggering. I am a pretty big dude and the 4th gen felt like a sardine can. Meanwhile space is plentiful in the 5th gen. I am specifically referring to the drivers seating area.

Really? I had a fourth gen and a fifth gen and I thought they were about the same size. The third gen to the fourth gen there was a big step up in size.

For myself it’s great to have not to have to pack things tightly. You can throw down the seats, throw in all your fishing gear, tool box, coolers, luggage etal hook up your boat and go. Everything is covered from elements and it fits in the garage easily.

I think Blazers and Explorers both used to come in two and four door and then both went to four door back in the day. It was probably cheaper as mentioned based lower sales of two door versions.
