Why do people sell 4Runners?

I’m looking at used 4 Runners since new ones are so scarce. I see a fair number 1, 2 or 3 years old with 20k to 60k miles. One had Title history and was a rental from Colorado, used by ski people. The reasons informed people buy them are reliability, capability and quality. I’m assuming some buy them and become disappointed in fuel economy and old tech ? Any here had luck finding low mileage used vehicles that were properly cared for?

Same reason people sell other vehicles.
    • Not big enough for their family
    • Bad fuel economy
    • Getting a divorce
    • Lost their job / Can't afford payments
    • Kid(s) going to college / tuition
    • Buying a newer 4Runner

Yup, it's nice when you own a repair garage and have elderly customers.

A large percentage of the used 4Runners that show up at dealers seem to have been bought at auction from rental companies. Rental car companies seem to unload them right around 50K miles. Probably standard procedure with all their vehicles.

Lots of people do the same thing, get a new car every few years and trade in or sell the old one.

I'm parting with mine for one reason only - tow capacity. When I purchased it two years ago the only thing I was towing was a 16' utility trailer for my ATVs. But since then I've acquired a 26' Rockwood mini-lite which exceeds the 4runners tow capacity. It's kind of a heart breaker as I really enjoy my Runner and all I've done to make it special to me but life goes on, right?

Last 20 or so years, we buy all our vehicles from a 'no haggle" dealership. they get most of their stock from fleet and rental companies that like to turn over their assets regularly. Most of the 4Runners they get are SR5s with a few limiteds now and then. I got my 2019 4Runner from them in June of 2019 with 12k on the odometer. Was in amazing shape and still looks and drives great today.
Me, I always plan to keep a vehicle at least 5 years and have gone as long as 15 on a few...but a lot of people like to trade every 2 or so. Lady next door trades her 4Runner in every year. Doesn't make sense to me since as we all know, the design doesn't change but spending money is good for the economy, lol!
The only reason I've ever considered dumping mine is the gas mileage and the hard seats, but I like it overall and I'm getting too old to be fixing a vehicle all the time and I love that I never have to work on this thing besides maintenance.

A Ford dealer near me has a 2021 4 Runner, Mag Gray TRDOR. It looks great. $35,500. It has 41,500 miles and was first Titled 21 months ago with 39 month and 18,500 miles left on factory power train warranty. It was a rental from NY. I figured the car would have been subjected to 2 winters of salted roads. The undercarriage looks great, no evidence of rust. My gut feeling is stay away from a rental from the NE due to salted roads. Is it possible to inspect a frame and predict future corrosion problems? Or is it a case where the slag is already in crevices and it’s gonna start corroding much faster than a vehicle from the Southeast? Does anyone know if these rental companies maintain their vehicles adequately?

Well, I still don't know what possessed me to sell my first one. But the second one I sold because I got 6 grand more than I paid for it and it seemed like a good idea at the time.

We bought our 2019 TRD OR with 8,000 miles in 2021. :)

We think it was possibly bought just before Covid hit, and like everyone else's cars - sat around and then for some reason, the owner sold it. It is in amazingly new condition and still had the remainder of the factory warranty when we bought it.

Got my 2019 SR5 Premium with 17K miles. Was what I wanted, and I knew Toyota durability. Had it 3 years and no issues at all. Driven through some pretty bad snowstorms along the eastern Cascades, eastern Sierras, and western Rockies. Comfortable and carries "enough" stuff for 2–3-week trips (we're old and motel it!).

With the insanely high resale value of 4Runners, I think this explains a great deal of the low mile, 1-2 year old 4Runners on the used market. I think it’s enticing people to trade in a truck they’ve used for a year or two for a brand new one when they know they will barely lose any money doing it.

First post. Just picked up this pristine 2022 TRD Off Road with only 3000 miles on it. Clean Carfax...but no idea why anyone would have gotten rid of a beautiful machine like this unless they bought it as a commuter and were disappointed in the fuel mileage.

Well, I got rid of my 2019 TRD ORP in June of 2020, to purchase a 2020 TRD ORP because it came with a bigger Nav head unit. o_Oo_Oo_O

    Cheers,

People’s needs change. A Runner can't haul or tow much. I'd have to look for something else when I start towing my GTO to the track if I get to that point.

I sold my 21 because I missed having an open bed, so I bought a Tacoma. I really miss the 4Runner as the engine, transmission and build quality is superior imo. I have since bought a small utility trailer and will be in the market for another 4Runner if I can get the right price for my Tacoma.

    I've sold two 2019 4R Limited's for a new 2021 and 2023 TRD ORP model.
My wife really liked going to a "Sporty Version" of the 4R. LOL
If you have a good dealership that's not marking up over MSRP... with the high resale value you can upgrade pretty efficiently.

when i do sell mine, it will be because of miles and need for something else.. possibly another 4runner...

my 2022 i purchased brand new and hadn't planned on putting a lot of miles on it... well a year later and i just hit 30k... an unexpected job change (promotion) had me driving from ohio to DC multiple times a month and then a cross country trek really put the miles on the vehicle...

Im going to keep her until around 60k and then start looking at options to trade in... so if I do trade her it she will be dealer maintained and mostly highway miles... and full service car wash at least once weekly so no issues at all with mine... i just want to get max trade in value, so that pre 60k trade in will be important for me...

I'm ~73 and mine has ~33K on it. When it gets transferred, I'll be dead and so will my wife and it will go, most likely, to my nephew. Niece gets the RAV4 with ~35K on it.

I plan on keeping mine till I die also. But I'm gonna' leave it to my kid. As long as I keep having Fluid Film done every October, & I'm not in any major accidents, I see no reason that my 19' TRDOR will be the last 4WD that I ever buy. I absolutely love this thing!

Have made that mistake before! I am keeping my 4R, and getting a Tacoma as well. I know if I part with the 4R I will forever kick myself.
