3M double sided tape removal

I Did a center console shift panel cover trim. the carbon fiber style. Not happy with it, it's tooo shiny and does't look right. I should have gone with the matte black style. I would like to replace it but what kind of a job am I looking at getting the old one off. I did a great job of installing the first one with the supplied 3M tape, its stuck on there real good. I don't have a problem with destroying the first one but I want to be careful with the stock shift panel.

Anybody had any experience with something like this. It's still winter here and am wondering if i should wait till warmer weather so the glue will release better, or does it matter, probably have to pry it off piece by piece.

I usually roll it off. Helps to be a bit warmer. Might need to use a plastic trim removal tool

 

First Take some of that spyder wire or any other braided fishing line like a 4 to 6LBS test size and 2 pieces of dowel or 1/2 x 1/2 inch wood sticks as long as they are strong and about 4 to 5 inches long wrap the around bout so they do not come off and make it long enough between the two sticks to have 3 inches extra on each end over the widest part of the cover trim.

Warm the cover trim up a bit with hair dryer but don't over heat it just make it good and warm.
Pry up an area that you can start the fishing line under then pull and work it back and forth with a sawing motion pulling the string under the trim that you want to remove don't hurry and reheat as needed.
Once you have it off if the is a lot of sticky crap left to remove WD40 it gently and work a rag over it to roll the sticky stuff off.

 

Panel tool and a heat gun to loosen the glue. Careful not to linger too long in one area with heat.

 

I was gonna suggest a GooGone product but I would be afraid that it would attack the plastic or ruin/smear the silver finish.

To ease your mind somewhat - I had a carbon fiber overlay on the dash around the factory head unit surround, for a couple of years, to match my oem CF shift panel cover. When I got my Off Roam phone mount, it wouldn't quite fit with the overlay. It was on pretty tight, but a bit of tugging got it to come loose, with no harm to the factory surround. Granted, it was late last summer/early fall, so the temperature was a bit warmer. I think if you heat it up with a hair dryer, not a heat gun, it will get warm enough to pull free, IMO.

 

Thanks for all the feedback. I will wait awhile for some warmer weather and borrow the wife's blow dryer and give it a go.
