I ran 255/80's, a true 33 and only had slight rubbing on the front mud flap. I wheeled the crap out of it too.

Respectfully, I think you may have misunderstood that response based on what you typed (or maybe I misinterpret your post).

He didn't perform surgery until after a lift. It's a perfect example where he had rubbing stock, had rubbing with a lift, and didn't resolve until surgery was performed.

Exactly what I posted in the first reply to this thread and others have tried to communicate. IFS lifts do not provide clearance for larger tires.

I've had no issues with running E. I prefer it especially with all the rocks in CO

I DD mine, I've put over 80k on mine in 5 years, the E's have never bothered me. With the 255's the E's aren't super heavy. Plus with the lower rolling resistance they aren't bad. I can still get over 20mpg on the highway and keep up with 75mph speed limits.

Kmeeg, the issue that I have with this thread is that your title and your poll say two different things. I've never heard anyone say that they have "no clearance issues" with a 33" tire. What everyone says is that a lift is not required. Those are not mutually exclusive statements. I'll chime in for real once I get 33's on my new 4Runner, but I can tell you from a previous 4Runner and two previous Tacos, the only thing required to run 255/85R16's (identical in dimensions to a 255/80R17), which are a true 33...usually 33.1 to 33.4"...is to remove the front mud flap and maybe trim a little plastic on the inside of the front fender (not visible without your head stuck in the wheel well). So no, it doesn't pass your poll test, but it certainly passes your thread title. A lift is not necessary for 33's, nor will it help (unless it's a huge lift).

Putting the debate aside, I think that 33’s look kinda goofy without some kind of lift. That’s part of the reason I opted to go back to 265’s when I had the spacer lift removed.

I've run LT/E 295/70/17 MT's half the year for the last 2 years. Aside from the loss of power (not regeared... Yet), and road noise, they're actually quite comfortable. I've been over 90 MPH many times with them, and regularly cruise at 80-85.

    @kmeeg

You own both of those 4Runners currently, right?

If so, why don't you try taking the front tires off both and switching them.

When you back out of your driveway, you'll find that your lifted limited with the new Pro wheels up front will rub and your Pro with the offroad wheels will not.

    This will answer your question.

^^ this... its all about offset.

If you want bigger tires, chances are they are going to rub. My suggestion would be to just trim the liners and just do a body mount chop.

I mean this is the most practical way to fit without it being just "theory". So yes, you do not NEED a lift

Your answer to the title of this thread... all wrapped up in one post

    Nano, they were OEM wheels.

Your comment I put in bold; what are you basing that on? Your poll? If that's the case, you've got two issues. First is that your poll so far has a sample size of 8. The second problem is that your poll doesn't include an option for what we're talking about. Nobody is going to read your poll and believe they should answer "no clearance issues" if they had to remove mud flaps or trim plastic (because those are both obviously clearance issues). You can find countless photos out there and thread posts of people running 33's without a lift, or with lifts less than 3".

I won't ever be able to tell you that I can run 33's without a lift, because I have a 2" lift on my new 4Runner. So my results will seem meaningless to you. But I hope you understand what everyone has told you, that anything shorter than a 3" lift won't impact 33" tire clearance. As one poster in this thread said; that debate was solved 13 years ago.

As a side note, I was only able to find one 255/80R17 that was shorter than a true 33, and that was the Cooper ST Maxx. The Nitto Grapplers, everything from Toyo, and the Falkens varied from 33.1" to 33.3". Across the board, it's safe to say that a 255/80R17 is a "true 33", whereas 285/70R17's seem to invariably be slightly under.

These are 255/85R16's KM2's on a bone stock Taco (2017). They rubbed the exact same place that people report having issues with 5th Gen 4Runners (at full turn and with weight transfer only). I removed the mud flaps and trimmed about 1" of plastic from the inside fender front and they never rubbed again. Never had a lift on it. From everything I've read, the 4Runner will be pretty much the exact same result. So no, that doesn't qualify as "no clearance issues", but it also proves a lift is not required.

That's my hangup with this thread. What Kmeeg asked, and what he's actually looking for are two different things. It makes the entire thread/ poll as clear as mud.

So a TRUE 33" tire means, tire manufacturer list the diameter at 33", or it measures 33" no installed/mounted or measures 33" installed?

Shit my 285s measure only 31.75"(installed/mounted).

It probably makes no difference in the real world. I've always gone by the manufacturer's stated specs. From the articles you read on tire size and tire fitment, it seems most other folks do as well, but that doesn't make us right. I consider 255/85R16's, 255/80R17's, 285/75R17's to be "true 33's". I don't consider 285/70R17's to be a true 33 unless the manufacturer lists it at 33" in their specs, and so far I haven't personally found one that does (they may be out there).

Like you, I hate rust with a passion. Ever since watching that Aussie guy's youtube channel, I spray the crap out of my truck with this stuff. It has the added benefit of making your truck smell like a battleship. Seriously. After I sprayed it all over my engine compartment, frame, undercarriage, etc., it immediately hit me how much it smelled like every aircraft carrier, battleship, and sub I've ever toured (which is more than I can count, since I'm a military history nerd).

IF you are so worried about this just keep 265 70 17s! 285s are only slightly larger and only increase ground clearance by what .5"? So just keep 265s and enjoy the peace of mind.

There was no backtracking. Just clarification on what he meant.

This thread is about needing LIFT to clear 33's.

    The answer is no.

You have "no modifications" stuck in your head for some reason.

This thread is about needing LIFT to clear 33's.

OP made it very clear in post #67 that trimming plastic was acceptable.
