I have four Maxtrax, the appropriate mounting pins, and I'm thinking about getting LFD crossbars to mount the pins to and putting the Maxtrax up there.

What does everyone recommend for covering the Maxtrax while they're on the roof? I don't want the UV to mess them up.

I could get some tarp sort of thing and wrap some Rok Straps around the Maxtrax to keep the tarp in place. I also gave thought to getting the official Maxtrax carrying case and punching holes for the pins in it. That case is expensive, though.

I keep four on the roof, and I shuffle the stack every once in a while.

I don’t leave my Maxtrax on full time, but I cover them with 303 every time I put them on the roof rack.

Man I get so jealous of those aussies when I watch their vids and see their pictures. Looks fucking beautiful over there. Plus the land cruiser 79 they have is a amazing beast with the v8 or the turbo d, can't get enough of that sound.

I wouldn't worry about it to much.

I'd just put them away until you're out wheeling but I do believe they offer covers.

I keep my Maxtrax on 365, no cover. Sun wont (or hasn't) effected them (2+ years). Very high quality UV-stabilized, flexible, super tough engineering-grade reinforced nylon. Better be for the price.

I do take my off-road storage box off when not overlanding, but its also made of a super resilient UV-stabilized material too:

I do shuffle the Maxtrax stack every once in a while, but doesn't seem to make a difference.

Well, damn. I heard somewhere that UV was a concern. Apparently it's not. Thanks for the heads up. This simplifies things.

Why do you think I spend so much time with my RC 4Runner and Bronco? It's way easier to find legal fun with one of those here in NJ.

Op, while looking into cross bars myself, several people had shown in a thread, pics of the lack of clearance of the LFD cross bars. They literally sit on the roof, from what I remember.

It's not the LFD crossbars that rub it's that front wind fairing crossbar.

Yup, it’s the LFD front bar with integrated fairing. I returned mine because it touched. Although others with the same bar report no problem, so apparently there is variation in something.

Come to the Midwest. We don't have deserts and mountains, but we have beautiful forests with good, fun trails. Everything from easy to "fuck that shit!"

I might have to stop the next time I pass through. I keep saying I'm going to work some wheeling into a winter trip, but haven't done so, yet.

I decided to take a gamble with the integrated wind fairing crossbar. I am also going to get one of those double wide crossbars to put in the back. I'm going to get a Rotopax mount and water containers for the double wide, so if the fitment of the integrated wind fairing is that bad then I'll probably be more inclined to grind it down to make it fit than give up on the setup.

I also heard of the fitment issues in the past, but I bet they sorted them out by now. I'm also happy with the LFD sliders I got a couple years ago, so I'm feeling good about taking the chance on the integrated wind fairing crossbar.

I need to get out west, also. But, we have a lot of good outings around here. A bunch of the folks in the WI crew are headed to MOAB in a few months. It's bound to be a great trip. But, I just took a month off, so it's hard to justify right now.

Yeah, I have a friend who says the same thing, like his company would go under without him. :D

I usually go to Florida for 2 weeks every winter, but this year I was helping with repairs also.

They were nice bars, if I had to to do it again, I would have ground them down instead of return them. The other option is to get a regular crossbar for the front, but I saw a vid of somebody saying it’s pretty noisy without the fairing.

Speaking of LFD, anybody have their skidplates?

Gotcha... Yea, I remember seeing some posts about ppl having fitment issues with their integrated front fairing bar. The crossbars themselves though I think are awesome.

Seems like the "fix" was to not use the thicker weather stripping on that fairing. Honestly, they're original version of the fairing that simply attached to a regular bar, although not as clean as the integrated bar, probably had better clearance tolerances.

Mine had interference metal to metal. The rubber trim wouldnt fit without having to push down on the roof steel.

However, for some reason there is variance. LFD told me it’s variances in the truck.

And THAT'S why I opted to not go with LFD. Your thread saved me the headache, Spaz. Appreciate it.

Yes, it's the "wind fairing" front crossbar and the one I was speaking about, not meaning to say or imply ALL the bars did that.

It's good! I haven't had any problems. I haven't noticed any additional noise with all of the stuff up there, though it's been too cold to drive with the windows down.

Lay down some 3M paint protection film between the wind fairing and the roof of the 4Runner if you want. I didn't. The thing comes with soft weather stripping, and the roof is somewhat soft. I'm not too worried about rub, and I'd rather things be a little snug in order to prevent noise. Plus, I don't have to worry about a little piece of tape maybe coming loose and causing more noise.

Wife and I are retired. Go south to Socal & AZ for 2-3 weeks each year, and then another trip somewhere. This year a 10-day cruise to southern Alaska. Been to Kenai peninsula 3-4 times for halibut fishing. I left my traction mats on 24/7/365. Just a little color fading. Recently removed my basket and put the mats inside and switched my shovel to Spetnaz entrenching tool. Age & health precludes any more extensive off-roading.
