What have you done to your 5th Gen 4Runner today?

Actually Ive done my extensive research to suffice on what I need to know and when to change my oil.. lmao.. to each its own.. but there are a bunch of threads on the forum with a big debate on oil changes.. including people who sent it to black stone..

 

I actually did the exact same thing. I bought a 2016 Tacoma and I honestly did love it. The truck in general is great, the 3.5 is not a bad engine BUT the 6 speed automatic is a POS It's in 6th gear by 40 mph which is great for gas mileage but terrible for performance. It would bog down, hunt for gears, and that's with the 2 updates Toyota did for the TCM. I kept it for 8 months, 3500 miles, and traded it on for my 2016 T4R and like you said, couldn't be happier. As you can tell though, I love MGM lol

 

It's not worth it to me. Am I wasting money changing my oil and filter at 5K? Maybe, but I don't care. It's $55 to change my oil using OEM oil and filter, small price to pay for peace of mind and knowing I have fresh oil. I have read through a lot of pages here and other forums about this. It's something no one will ever agree on 100% and that's ok, like others have said, to each their own. I have read a lot of posts and seen a bunch of pictures showing metal in the bottom of the oil filter cap which bothered me. I can say when I did my oil change at 2K miles, I didn't find a single spec of metal in my filter cap. Now is that because I did it at 2K and not 10K? I don't know, but I was still happy to not see anything. I also drove it like a grandmother for those first 2K miles. No hard driving, no towing, no high RPM bursts, I treated it like it was made of glass. It's said engine break in is done at the factory on new vehicles and I don't doubt that but break in is far more than just the first 30-45 minutes at 2000-2500 RPM for cam lobe break in. It takes time to seat rings, start to seat cam bearings, crank bearings, rod bearings, and everything else that takes place inside a new engine. I'll be interested to see what the oil change at 5K miles reveals but I expect the oil to still be nice and clean.

 

I get what you are saying, I think for the "nerds", which I am one, on this topic we are always going to change our oil way before 10k miles. Keep in mind, the car business, second only to housing is what helps fuel our economy. Manaufactuers would love everyone to be out of their cars way before they are paid off to help keep the enormous machine moving. Even with the molecular makeup of synethic oils today, I still have a hard time believing that with all the start, stop, start again that most of us do on a daily basis that the friction is not increased as the oil ages. I send each oil change on all of my vehicles to Blackstone not to reassure myself that I'm treating the vehicle well, but when to let the vehicle go to avoid either a costly breakdown or diminish the value of the vehicle.

IMHO, Chris from MD is doing what is necessary to help keep a vehicle moving way beyond 300k miles.

Does anyone here have the Borla cat back exhaust system on their 5th gen?

 

I heard it's a waste of cash, but sounds cool. Not sure why anyone would want to install that on a V6.

 

Lifted 2.5/1.5 rear

 

I bought OEM cross rails and installed them this weekend. More annoying than I anticipated, only because of the removal of the endcaps on the side rails. The instructions are like 'use nylon removal tool' and 'press down, rotate'. So, what you actually have are two clip points at about third points, on each side, and you need a third hand... you are pushing down on the cap AND pushing inward, on whichever side will be opposite your pivot, AND you'll be trying to wedge the nylon tool at each tab point to force the disconnection of the clip. The tab points are not marked, so you're guessing on the approximate location, and the tab is about 1/4" wide. For a nylon tool, I used a bike tire lever. So I got the first one off, after some experimentation, after about 10 minutes. The second one took forever, as it was perniciously tight. Plus, factor in the general access difficulty getting up to the roof of the 4Runner (I stood on the rear tires)... once those caps were off, sliding the rails in and locating them was no problem. The OEM rail has an odd locking system in place: a hand knob AND a pair of M6 starhead screws on each side. It feels less secure than anything I've used on the MINIs over the last 13 years... but anyway, one nice thing about the OEM rails is that they are flush with the side rails, slightly bowed, and minimal. This is good for minimizing wind noise when nothing is attached to them.

 

Not sure it's even worth the sound lol. It's very hard to make a V6 sound good.

 

The trick to the end caps is to grab them with both hands over the top, then push / roll them inward, then quickly and aggressively snap them outward. You can actually do it without tools. Somewhat difficult to explain, hope that makes sense.

 

Installed the yorkim LEDs lights interior and it looks way better!

 

No! I've been on the look out for them as well. I might just end up plastidipping them.

Question on the economy scale in the dash. Has anyone found a way to delete it.....I would just like to see the MPH.

 

Techstream software or shift into '5' via sport mode and it goes away.

As to the oil changes, I was going to see if mine will change it at 2k. Seems to me you want to change it after the break in .

 

Does the 2017 4Runner have a turn signal lane change option (Mine seems to not have them like my 16' Tacoma or they are turned off). Or does anyone knoe of a mod to provide these?

 

I also had a 2016 Tacoma, and wonder the same thing. Hard to believe a vehicle that costs this much wouldn't have the 3 - 5 flash turn signal option.

 

Not hard at all, you just get used to giving the lever one touch and make the lane change. Never had it before the Tacoma so it's not a big deal to me.
