Are TRD Pros "limited production"?

    LOL Me too. At 72 years old, I appreciate the heated seats. Especially nice while driving and waiting for the engine to reach operating temperature to use the heater.

    I did a little research and these are the numbers found: in 2021 Toyota sold 144,696 4Runners. There are 2,000 to 3,500 4R TRD Pros produced annually. If Toyota produced 3,500 4R TRDP in 2021 that would be 2.4% of 4Rs sold that year. The source for the TRD Pro numbers is from fourwheeltrends. Not sure regarding accuracy. Hope this helps answer the OP’s question.

    Limited production vehicle is a vehicle for which the manufacturer has established a limit on the number units to be produced, without regard to the maximum number the manufacturer may be able to sell.

    Example: There will only be 2000 built in a model year, even if they have 20,000 ordered.

    Since you cannot "order" a Toyota, I'm not sure that term applies.

    Most dealers around here mark up any TRD Off Road that hits the lot...only way to get MSRP is to drop a deposit and wait.

    As for manufacturers that let you select model, trim and options beyond that, Ford does, I suspect GM does. Never heard of this "tell a dealer what you are looking for and when one is allocated that matches what you want, they will let you know" thing that Toyota does until October when I pulled the deposit I had on a Bronco and placed it on a 4Runner instead.

    My TRD ORP should be here this month. Tires are being swapped before I pick it up, the rest of the mods will come in time...

    Jeep will let you order a vehicle as you want it as well. In fact, they will let you order off-menu. I test drove a Jeep that had upholstery I hadn’t seen on the website, and asked the salesman about it. He said that the customer asked for it, so they accommodated him. (He backed out of the deal, which is why I could take a test drive in it.) you can get anything you want from Jeep if you’re willing to wait.

    Oh how Toyota mocks us with their build and price tool …
    Hopefully it’s not a jinx if I wish you congratulations in advance! When you pick it up, do a thorough inspection. In my car the parking brake had never been adjusted.

    Yes, that really took me by surprise after I questioned dealer on it. The dealer I selected for deposit did give me straight, truthful answers though. I can't say that for several others. And now I wait....

    You can order a 4Runner. There are 3 items that make it hard. 1 is the time it takes. 2. The Toyota distribution region can make it difficult. 3. The dealers like to make it difficult.

    Most dealers dont like to do it because it’s extra work on their part. When you add that to the complexity of how Toyota has been setup in the US most dealers just say no and would rather move a different unit or work with a different customer.

    The “easiest” way to get an order is to find a dealer that has an allocation that has not been built yet and have them put the changes in. This takes extra work for them and they make nothing extra on a vehicle that they know will sale to someone anyways so they are not really motivated to do it. You also have the issue with the US based Toyota distributer that the dealership is connected to. When a factory order is placed they don’t get to add any extra items so they make less money. For those that don’t know most of the US dealers don’t get to work with Toyota directly. They have to work with a Toyota distributor. In Texas Gulf States Toyota aka GST are the ones that supply Toyota vehicles to the Toyota dealers they receive the vehicles form the port and and extra items like mud flaps, mats, paint protection, phone connectivity kits etc to them. They add them to the “factory” options and reprint the Monroney sticker for the vehicle. When you do a factory order they dont get to put their “factory” items on them and they make less too.

    I bought my ‘23 TRD Pro in Solar Octane for MSRP a couple months ago in NJ. No dealer add ons or any other nonsense. Maybe I just got lucky. It’s a sweet truck but not worth paying over sticker.

    I went the same route you are favoring. Back in Spring of 2021 I put down a deposit for a TRD Pro and got my vehicle for MSRP. I live in California and could not find a deal at MSRP anywhere in or near my state so I bought my truck from Motorcars Toyota in Cleveland. Give Erin Biats a call, she helped me get my truck.

    Good luck finding a Pro under $60k. I just bought a 2022 Off road premium in the Northwest for $53k. It was the exact one i was looking for though. It worked out for me. All the stars aligned on this one. I took what i could get due to the long wait times. They only had three 4 Runners on the lot, a 2018 and 2019 SR5 and a 2020 Limited. Slim pickings.

    That's why I have a deposit on one at an MSRP dealer. If it's already on the lot, it probably has a markup. I did see a TRD ORP on lot with all the off-road upgrades from Pro for $53k, but that is very near Pro prices without the resale or other features a Pro has.

    2023 Solar Octane of course! :)

    Seriously, used prices are right up there with new so why wouldn't I buy new?

    BMW, Audi, Mercedes and other European luxury makes will let you order any combination. Mercedes will even do one-off custom colors and upholstery (if you give them a color chip) on higher end models - for a price $$$$$. Most of them will even let you fly to Europe and accept delivery at the factory (with a discount on destination charges and dealer fees that's big enough to fund the trip). Its a particularly big deal for BMW CCA guys.

    On the other end of the spectrum, Honda is even more restrictive than Toyota. Each model only has a couple trim levels (LX, EX, Touring, Sport, etc) . No option packages, no orders. You just get in line for whatever a dealer has inbound, or you ask them to do a dealer swap.

    Putting a deposit down while you’re thinking is a great idea. It usually takes 5-12 months to get a Pro, depending on the dealer’s allocation frequency for Pros and how many people are ahead of you.

    The 2023 Solar Octane is a beautiful color and the pictures don’t do it justice. You really have to like orange, which I do and it appeals to me.

    Lower mileage used Pro prices are about 4-6k lower than a new 2023 Pro, depending on year and location.

    I just saw my exact same 4R with the exact same mileage (2021 Lunar Rock Pro with 33,000 miles) listed for $51,222 in Warrenton, VA - about an hour from me. I paid $54K new (05/21) which included a $2,000 markup.

    One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
    Price was not a consideration for us, we could’ve bought a Pro, we just liked the ORP better. We didn’t like being forced to have a moonroof(which we ended up with anyway) and that awful roof rack we would’ve never used. I am deaf in one ear so the loss of the subwoofer didn’t matter. We still got the MTM, TRD wheels and KDSS(great in the twisties). Shocks are easy to change.

    When I was hunting for a new Limited a few weeks ago a dealership told me he had no Limiteds but offered me a new TRD Pro for MSRP. I told him I wasn’t interested.

    He then called me a week later and asked me if I still wanted the TRD Pro.

    It’s “in transit” due at the beginning of February. It was not pre-sold as of last week.

    I hope all members here are not like you.

    My question was:
    Are TRD Pros "limited production"? Meaning cars that are produced in low numbers usually reserved for a special occasion, maybe an anniversary or to celebrate a partnership with another brand.

    How in the world did I answer my own question?

    What does my current location have to do with driving in Idaho? I went to Couer d’Alene, Idaho website and the ADM is $12k for one and $10k for the second one. They are all over in dealer lots, just not at MSRP. In fact, many dealers hide their ADM until you are ready to buy.

    I wouldn't necessarily say that they are in limited production. As another member stated, Toyota makes less of this trim level than any other. There was a discussion somewhere that Toyota only made 3000 or so of these every year, but no solid evidence to back it up as there is no VIN specific to the Pro. What makes them difficult to obtain is the number that is allocated to a specific region. Some regions will get a lot more than another. Then the region will send those to the dealers based on 4Runner sales from a prior quarter or year (not exactly sure how they go about this). It's all the dealer ADMs that make these more difficult to obtain. Those dealers have a small list of buyers but they are willing to pay the ADM. A dealer that sells them strictly at MSRP may only get 1-5 a year with a list of 100+ buyers. If you are going for a Pro specific color, then be patient and put in the work to find it at MSRP (I know that OP put a deposit down and is waiting). If you just want a standard color, then I would go with a TRD Off-Road and add your own suspension, wheels, grill, etc., unless some of the other Pro features are needed like JBL and dual climate control.
