Wondering if any here have replaced timing chains and guides in 5th gen Dual VVT-i 1GR-FE engine and at what mileage or is it less expensive to drop in a replacement engine at the point.

I just posted this response on a different thread but my wife's 2010 has 350k on it and I honestly couldn't tell you if it has had a chain done at all but it does run as quiet as my 2013 with 115k on it and doesn't really feel any different.

Awesome! I was just wondering about this. Anyone here besides @himileage with a higher mileage 1GR on the original chain?

Another reason to change the oil at 5,000 miles intervals.

I thought timing chains did not need to be replaced like timing belts. Maybe I am wrong, any clarification would be appreciated.

As the Car Care Nut states. If the paint is still present and vibrant on the links of the timing chains there is no need to replace them regardless of mileage. They are the indicator as to worn/stretched overheated timing chains. Toyota timing chains are among the most robust of any manufacturer. The more consistent you are with quality oil changes the longer they will serve you. Potentially the life of the truck.

2014 SR5 with 320K miles. From what I’ve researched, Toyota says no need to change the timing chain unless the engine has a rough idle. There is a how to YouTube video on changing the timing chain. It says that it is a 10 hour book job, but the highly edited video is 2 hours long. I’d take it on, but not if it was my primary driver. So we have a 2023 Off-road on order. Our truck runs the same as new at this point.

This is bad advice. So many things can cause a rough idle it isn't funny. Any timing chain issues would set fault codes pretty much right away. Noise would be your second clue.

Does the 4 Runner 4.0 V6 require engine removal to replace the timing belt, water pump, or VVTI gears?

Thanks. Sorry I knew it had a chain, not a belt. Brain dump. I had a Tacoma with 3.5 V6 that had the timing chain cover oil leak. Engine removal was required to reseal the cover. So the the 4.0 liter V6 timing chain cover can be resealed without pulling engine? What’s the difference between the Tacoma and 4 Runner? Just more space between the engine and radiator?
